Excorporal bovine eye has been resuscitated and sustained with an aim of its development as an alternative to whole animal in evaluating acute retinal toxicity of xenobiotics. As indicated by the stable ERG response, such preparation is functionally reactive to photic stimuli over a span of

h. Moreover, after experienced a 20 min hypoxia the reperfused eyes recovered fully. This functionally responsive preparation was used to evaluate the influence of a highly purified bacterial collagenase (Nucleolysin) on the integrity of vitreoretinal junction. Nucleolysin at concentrations between 120-600 U/ml was injected into the posterior chamber for 15 min. Retinal surfaces were irrigated and eyes were perfusion fixed with glutaraldehyde. Ultrastructural analysis indicated that
thinning
of the internal limiting membrane occurred when enzyme exceeded 480 U. At 600 U concentration, the principle subcellular change involved the end-foot region of the Muller cells. These studies suggest that the isolated, perfused bovine eye is a suitable model for evaluating acute retinal toxicity of xenobiotics.

Many investigators have measured corneal thickness after keratoplasty using organ culture and storage mediums. Values for corneal thickness were found to stabilize

months postoperatively, reaching normal values. We followed 59 corneal transplant recipients whose donor tissue was obtained from organ culture (average preservation time 13 days) for > 1 year retrospectively. The overall graft survival was 95.3%. The graft was thick in the early postoperative period. It subsequently became thinner, reaching the lowest level 5-9 months postoperatively (mean 0.48 mm, SD 0.04). After this period the corneas gradually became thicker and reached the normal corneal thickness. The extreme
thinning
of transplanted corneas in the first postoperative year has not been described before. We found a negative correlation between conservation time and thickness 5-9 months postoperatively. We postulate that organ culture may have a high impact on keratocyte function.

Rapid chondrolysis after partial arthroscopic lateral meniscectomy has been seldom reported in literature. Considering the relatively high number of partial lateral meniscectomy performed, we cannot understand why this complication is so rare. The purpose of this paper is to report a series of athletes developing a chondrolysis associated with posterolateral corner laxity after a partial lateral meniscectomy and attempt to hypothesize the pathogenesis of this devastating complication. Five male professional soccer players of Italian championship with a mean age of 26.8 years underwent a partial lateral meniscectomy because of a traumatic lateral meniscus tear. Patients showed a slight varus knee and there were clinical signs compatible with a meniscal tear. No other pathological sign were found. An MRI scan confirmed these findings. After surgery patients were unable to resume sport activities because of swelling and knee pain during training sessions. At a mean time of 8 months (range

months) from surgery patients were re-examined and a new MRI scan was performed. Clinical examination revealed a slight swelling of the knee and signs of posterolateral corner laxity. MRI scan revealed intra-articular fluid and pathological findings of knee posterolateral corner associated with a
thinning
of the articular cartilage. Arthroscopy showed free cartilagineous debris floating into the knee and a high grade of cartilage damage on the lateral compartment. The evaluation of lateral compartment, ruled-out a new tear of the meniscal remnant and showed a positive drive-trough sign with knee in the Fig. 4 positioning. All patients had an open re-tensioning of the posterior meniscofemoral capsule, and in one case, an augmentation of the popliteal tendon using a free semi-tendinous graft was also done. This surgery gave a complete resolution of symptoms and patients resumed sports activities without any restriction after a period between 4 and 5 months. Based on this experience we hypothesize that partial lateral meniscectomy may have a role in causing a subtle rotatory instability that combined with high stress of sports activity can dramatically increase the susceptibility of joint to chondrolysis, Varus knee seems to be a possible predisposing factor. Open surgery addressing the insufficiency of lateral or posterolateral corner has been found to be effective in improving knee function and resolve patients symptoms at a short-term follow-up.

Symptomatology and behavioral characteristics in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have increasingly been linked to abnormalities in early brain growth patterns of affected children. Studies investigating specific components of gray matter structure, such as cortical thickness (CT), have produced conflicting results, and have rarely included additional measures of social impairment. In the present study, we applied a surface-based whole brain analysis to investigate CT in a sample of 36 pre-adolescent children [18 subjects with ASD (IQ mean: 111) and 18 healthy controls (IQ mean: 112.8), age range
6-12
years]. The CT analysis revealed widespread, but mostly left-hemispheric
thinning
in frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital brain areas related to the theory-of-mind network and the heteromodal association cortex. In an exploratory analysis, CT was observed to be differently associated with social impairment in children with ASD compared with typically developing children. The affected neuroanatomical regions are related to characteristic deficits in language, cognition and behavior that are often observed in the disorder. The relationship between social impairment and CT in children with ASD and controls seems to indicate aberrant developmental trajectories in ASD emerging early in life.

The properties in aqueous solution of polymer-particle composites (PPC) depend on the size and the concentration of both the particles and the polymers as well as the interactions between them. In this work, rheological behaviour was studied in a semi-diluted regime of partially hydrolysed polyacrylamide (HPAM) with 2Rg/d a particle diameter/polymer gyration radius (Rg) ratio and a confinement parameter (pc) that were both greater than 1. Rg is the polymer gyration radius and d the particle diameter. pc characterizes the inter-particle distance (ID) with respect to the polymer size (pc = ID/2Rg) and depends on the concentration and size of the particles. We highlighted the PPC thickening effects as a function of the number of carboxylic functions on the surface of the polystyrene particles (PSL) obtained by free soap free emulsion polymerization (0.16-1.2 mmol g-1 of COOH). Thickening increases linearly with surface functionality for a pc of less than 10. This behaviour has been correlated to the polymer-particle interactions, which was demonstrated by adsorption measurements in dilute solution (12-22 mg g-1 of HPAM on PSL). Adsorption was quantified by zero-shear capillary viscosity measurements in a microfluidic device. In contrast, a
thinning
effect was observed for a pc greater than 10, which is also related to the salt effect studies (

g L-1 in NaCl).
