A quantitative investigation was undertaken to evaluate the changes which occur in the dental tissues of the rat incisor following the systemic administration of adrenal glucocorticoid hormone. Of the 53 rats used in the 5 week experiment, 21 acted as untreated controls while the remaining 32 each received weekly subcutaneous injections of 0-1 ml
Depo-Medrone
. Throughout the experimental period the mandibular incisor eruption rates of a selection of both groups of rats were recorded. Transverse ground sections were prepared from the left mandibular incisor of each animal. Measurements taken on sections prepared at a standard reference level enabled comparisons to be made between control and hormone-treated animals in the dimensions of their incisor dentine and pulp. The results indicated that maintaining mature rats in a hyperglucocorticoid state caused a significant increase in incisal eruption rate, together with a
thinning
of the dentine walls and an increase in size of the pulp chambers of these teeth.

The cytostatic effect of medroxyprogesterone acetate (
MPA
; an oral luteohormone preparation) on two cell lines of ovarian carcinoma cultured in vitro (SHIN-3 and MN-1) was studied. At the same time, changes in the morphology and colony formation of these cancer cells after exposure to the drug were examined. 1) The doubling time of SHIN-3 cells in the logarithmic growth phase was prolonged 2.5 times at a
MPA
dose of 10(-8)M and 3.2 times at a
MPA
dose of 10(-5)M. The drug, however, exerted no significant cytostatic effect on MN-1 cells. 2) When the IC50 of
MPA
was assessed by counting live SHIN-3 cells in an FCS-added medium, it was 2.7 x 10(-5)M. When the same assessment was done with a medium without serum, IC50 was 6.4 x 10(-6)M. 3) After 120 hours of incubation in a medium containing 10(-8)M of
MPA
, CA125 (a tumor marker) production by SHIN-3 cells was suppressed by 35%. The suppression rate was 79% for SHIN-3 cells incubated in a medium containing 10(-5) of

Halopredone acetate (THS-201), a synthetic corticosteroid, is expected to be used clinically for intra-articular injection because of its long-lasting activity in the synovial bursa. Subacute toxicity study was carried out on THS-201 by using Jcl: Wistar rats. THS-201 was subcutaneously administered to the rat in doses of 0.1, 0.5, 2.5 and 12.5 mg/kg/day, with the periods for administration and recovery being 3 and 2 months, respectively.
Methylprednisolone acetate
(
MPA
) was used for the positive control in dose of 0.5 mg/kg/day. In the group of THS-201 12.5 mg/kg, the below findings were observed:
thinning
of lumbar hair, swelling of injection site, suppression in body weight gain and decrease of food consumption. The lesions to lymphatic system were indicated by the examinations of peripheral blood, autopsy and histopathology. Slight changes in erythrocytic and biochemical values were seen, and foreign body granuloma was observed in injected subcutis. These findings, exception for lesion of injection site, were almost recovered after the 2 month-recovery period. In the group of THS-201 2.5 mg/kg, some of the changes were noted slightly. In the groups of THS-201 0.5 and 0.1 mg/kg, any toxic changes attributable to THS-201 were not observed. On the other hand, in the group of
MPA
0.5 mg/kg, similar findings noted in THS-201 12.5 mg/kg group were observed, but these changes were recovered almost completely at the end of the 2 month-recovery period. It was concluded that the non-toxic dose and the defined toxic dose of THS-201 in this study were 0.5 and 2.5 mg/kg/day, respectively.

A homologous series of hyperbranched polyesters (HBPEs) was successfully synthesized via an esterification reaction of 2,2-bis(methylol)propionic acid (bis-
MPA
) with pentaerythritol. The molecular weights of the HBPEs were 2160, 2660, 4150 and 5840 g/mol, respectively. These HBPEs were used as additives to prepare polysulfone (PSf) hollow fiber membranes via non-solvent induced phase separation. The characteristic behaviors of the casting solution were investigated, as well as the morphologies, hydrophilicity and mechanical properties of the PSf membranes. The results showed that the initial viscosities of the casting solutions were increased, and the shear-
thinning
phenomenon became increasingly obvious. The demixing rate first increased and then decreased when increasing the HBPE molecular weight, and the turning point was 2660 g/mol. The PSf hollow fiber membranes with different molecular weights of HBPEs had a co-existing morphology of double finger-like and sponge-like structures. The starting pure water contact angle decreased obviously, and the mechanical properties improved.
