The paper confirms the existence of a peroxide mechanism involved in oxidation of iron and manganeses by the most typical iron bacteria growing at neutral acidity of the medium. Oxidation of bivalent iron and manganese is accomplished by the simultaneous action of catalase and hydrogen peroxide produced in the respiratory chain in the course of oxidation of organic substances. Catalase performs the peroxidase function in these processes. The possibility of these biological reactions to occur and the necessary conditions have been studied in vitro. Possible variants of iron and manganese oxidation by iron bacteria are discussed, including the conditions for "symbiotic" oxidation of manganese by mixed cultures of microorganisms.

It has been suggested that oral dissemination might be the major transmission vehicle for Helicobacter pylori, and that dental plaque might act as its reservoir. The presence of H. pylori was investigated in 62 odontological male and female patients (average age: 35 years old). Samples were taken from supragingival plaque, placed in 0.3 ml of thioglycolate broth, cultured within 12 h in Mueller-Hinton agar with the addition of 5-7% of sheep blood and antibiotic supplement, and incubated at 37 degrees C in microaerophilia for 5-7 days. Typical colonies were identified by gram, urease, oxidase and catalase. H. pylori was detected in a 15 year-old patient suffering from gastric acidity (1.61% positivity index). The medium used facilitated recovery of the agent from a sample abundant in germs. H. pylori was not recovered from the same patient 12 months later, suggesting that there might have been a transitory passage by gastric reflux or that the bacterium was acquired from an exogenous source.

Evaluation was made of six tomato cultivars (Micra RS, Dual Plus F1, Pasadena F1, RS 356743 F1, RS 933409 F1, and Sanga F1) produced by Seminis Vegetable Seeds breeders and recommended for freezing in slices or cubes. Of the investigated cultivars only RS 356743 F1 showed morphological traits that did not recommend it for this processing technology. The ratio sugars/acids, the content of protopectins and pectins, and the activity of enzymes does not recommend RS 356743 F1 and Pasadena F1. No significant differences in the content of soluble solids, alkalinity of ash, carotenoids, lycopene, chlorophylls, and peroxidase activity between the cultivars were determined. Differences in the value of the remaining indices were small, not exceeding 10% in the content of dry matter and in active acidity, 20% in the content of sugars, ash, vitamin C, and in the activity of lipase, and 30% in the content of dietary fibre, total nitrogen, total acids, and beta-carotene. The only differences higher than 30% concerned the content of protopectins, pectins, nitrates, and catalase activity.

In the experimental stress literature, the results of investigations have not shown a specific sex-dependent vulnerability to stress ulceration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of sex differences on stress ulcer development. Related to gender, the contributing factors for stress ulcer production such as luminal acidity, sialic acid as an marker of gastric mucosal protection, oxygen (O2)-derived free radicals and endogenous antioxidant defence mechanisms were also investigated. Fifty Wistar Albino rats weighing about 230 g and aged 7 or 8 months were divided equally into five groups: Group I normal male rats, group II castrated male rats, group III normal female rats in estrus phase, group IV normal female rats in diestrus phase and group V castrated female rats. Cold restraint model was used for 6 hours to produce stress ulcer. No statistically significant difference was found out between groups in view of gross and histopathologic damage. There was no significant difference between groups according to gastric luminal acidity, gastric mucosal sialic acid, gastric malonaldehyde (MDA) and catalase values. Gastric superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was significantly lower in Group I in comparison to those of Group III and IV. Sex differences do not interfere stress ulcer formation. SOD activity in rat gastric tissue has varied significantly by hormonal milieu.

DHC-1, a herbal formulation, was tested for its anti-ulcer and antioxidant activity in rats. Effect of various doses (125, 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg, p.o.) of DHC-1 was studied on gastric secretion and gastric ulcers in pylorus-ligation and on ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury in rats. The reduction in ulcer index in both the models along with the reduction in volume and total acidity, and an increase in the pH of gastric fluid in pylorus-ligated rats proved the anti-ulcer activity of DHC-1. The increase in the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH) and membrane bound enzymes like Ca(2+)ATPase, Mg(2+)ATPase, and Na(+)K(+)ATPase and decrease in lipid peroxidation (MDA) in both the models showed the antioxidant activity of the formulation. Thus, it can be concluded that DHC-1 possesses anti-ulcer activity, which can be attributed to its antioxidant mechanism of action.

The anti-ulcerogenic effect of chitin and chitosan against ulcer induced by HCl-ethanol in male Wistar rats was studied. Levels of acid output, pepsin, protein, lipid peroxides and reduced glutathione and the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined in the gastric mucosa of normal and experimental groups of rats. A significant increase in volume and acidity of the gastric juice was observed in the ulcer-induced group of rats. Peptic activity was significantly decreased as compared with that of normal controls. In the rats pre-treated with chitin and chitosan 2% along with feed, the volume and acid output and peptic activity of gastric mucosa were maintained at near normal levels. The level of lipid peroxidation was significantly higher in the ulcerated mucosa when compared with that of normal controls. This was paralleled by a decline in the level of reduced glutathione and in the activity of antioxidant enzymes like GPx, GST, CAT and SOD in the gastric mucosa of ulcer-induced rats. Also, the levels of mucosal proteins and glycoprotein components were significantly depleted in ulcerated mucosa. The pre-treatment with chitin and chitosan was found to exert a significant anti-ulcer effect by preventing all the HCl-ethanol-induced ulcerogenic effects in experimental rats.

Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) (40.68 MHz, 15 and 30 W) has been studied for its effect on survivability of cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae UCM Y-517 under the extremal influence of the environment factors (pH, freezing-thawing, nistatin (1.0 microg/ml)). It is shown that even short-term irradiation of the yeast suspension (during 5 min) takes protective effect under the conditions of stress factors, displayed in the increase of the number of live intact cells. It was established by cytochemical methods that 50-70 % of cells were characterized as damaged and dead in the control samples after yeast exposition under the stress conditions. Such an effect was not observed in the samples of preliminary irradiated cells. The pool of extracellular nucleotides was shown to decrease as a result of the yeast cells irradiation; one could also observe the decrease of these cells ability to acidity the culture medium. The increase of activity of intracellular enzymes of dehydrogenase complex was noted as well. Stability of electrostatic characteristics of the cell surface (zeta-potential) and catalase activity under the effect of EMR of radio-frequency range has been demonstrated. The found effect of protective action of EMR of the above frequency is of nonspecific character, which allows its mechanism universality to be supposed.

Pepticare, a herbomineral formulation of the Ayurveda medicine consisting of the herbal drugs: Glycyrrhiza glabra, Emblica officinalis and Tinospora cordifolia, was tested for its anti-ulcer and anti-oxidant activity in rats. Effects of various doses (125, 250, 500 and 1000mg/kg, p.o.) of Pepticare were studied on gastric secretion and gastric ulcers in pylorus-ligation and on ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury in rats. The reduction in ulcer index in both the models along with the reduction in volume and total acidity, and an increase in the pH of gastric fluid in pylorus-ligated rats proved the anti-ulcer activity of Pepticare. It was also found that Pepticare was more potent than G. glabra alone in protecting against pylorus-ligation and ethanol-induced ulcers. The increase in the levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, reduced glutathione and membrane bound enzymes like Ca2+ ATPase, Mg2+ ATPase and Na+ K+ ATPase and decrease in lipid peroxidation in both the models proved the anti-oxidant activity of the formulation. Thus it can be concluded that Pepticare possesses anti-ulcer activity, which can be attributed to its anti-oxidant mechanism of action.
