Three athletes (one female, two males), aged 18-21 years, developed
acute abdominal pain
, two of them immediately after exercise including abdominal muscle training. The female patient had a pulmonary infection of uncertain cause at the time. The second patient obviously suffered from an allergic or
parasitic disease
(eosinophilia of 26%). The third patient, a swimmer, had the symptoms in the course of a flu-like infection after drinking about 100 g alcohol. Serum creatinine kinase activity was 7,800-17,500 U/l, making acute muscle damage likely, probably rhabdomyolysis. Ultrasound examination revealed echo-dense areas of the rectus abdominis muscle in two of the patients, in one of them associated with marked muscle swelling. In the third patient ultrasound was unremarkable during a symptom-free interval 8 days after the onset of symptoms. These observations indicate that even during banal infections sport exercise involving special strain on the abdominal musculature should not be undertaken because of the risk of rhabdomyolysis.

Paragonimiasis is a
parasitic disease
endemic to Asia, Africa, and South America. With the increasing number of Southeast Asian immigrants arriving in the United States, physicians should be aware of the various manifestations of this disease. We describe two adolescent Asian refugees who had atypical cases of paragonimiasis. One experienced
acute abdominal pain
mimicking appendicitis, and the other had asymptomatic left upper-lobe cavitation.

Introduction. Hydatid disease is caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus and is still a matter of public health in many regions of the world, where it is an endemic
parasitic disease
. Although the liver is the most involved organ, hydatidosis can be found anywhere in the human body. Rare forms of location may lead to diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas. Case Report. Herein we report a rare case of
acute abdominal pain
and progressively increasing abdominal distension due to abdominal and multiple splenic echinococcosis in a 72-year-old Caucasian male. We also provide a brief review of the literature. Conclusion. Although hydatid disease is found most often in the liver and lungs, rarely any organ of the body can be involved by this zoonosis. Though rare, the possibility of unusual location of echinococcosis must always be considered by the operating surgeon, when dealing with diffuse abdominal pain in endemic areas, because any misinterpretation may result in unfavorable outcomes.

Strongyloidiasis is a common
parasitic disease
in tropical regions of the world. Infection with Strongyloides stercoralis usually remains asymptomatic with peripheral eosinophilia and uncontrolled growth. Consequently, immunocompromised individuals are at a higher risk of complications of this disease. We present a case of an immunocompetent patient whose complaint of
acute abdominal pain
was found to be due to gastric and duodenal ulcerations. Laboratory examination revealed significantly elevated absolute eosinophil count at 11,466/mm(3) (normal 0-700/mm(3)). The duodenal biopsy revealed parasitic ova and adult worms suggestive of Strongyloides stercoralis nematode with increased eosinophils in the tissue. We report the first case of multiple gastric and duodenal ulcerations due to Strongyloides stercoralis in an immunocompetent patient. We suggest that the elevated eosinophil count played a central role in the pathogenesis.

We report on a 55-year-old Thai male who presented during a visit to Germany with
acute abdominal pain
in the right upper quadrant and signs of cholestasis. The diagnosis of liver fluke infection (opisthorchiasis) was confirmed by the detection of the characteristic eggs of Opisthorchis viverrini in stool microscopy. The patient was treated with praziquantel. Opisthorchiasis is a common
parasitic disease
and major public health problem in Southeast Asia and in Eastern Europe.

Acute abdominal pain
can be seen in cases with parasitic diseases delivered to emergency departments. The diagnosis of the
parasitic disease
can be delayed because of the similar clinical signs encountered in other frequently seen causes of acute abdomen. Nevertheless, the features detected in imaging scans can be helpful in the diagnosis. The present study aims to raise awareness about abdominal parasitosis in emergency conditions and also to underline the association between imaging findings and the life cycle of parasites with illustrative cases.
