The American Thoracic Society (ATS) respiratory disease questionnaire for adults was translated by two fluently bilingual Quebec health professionals into simple, everyday French easily understood by an adult population of varying age and educational background. After independent assessment by professional translators, it was field-tested on 165 silicon carbide production workers. Responses to the ATS cough questions were significantly related to those obtained by a semiquantitative estimate of cough frequency. ATS questions on cough and phlegm were significantly associated with the physical sign of productive cough on request. A significant association was found between answers to questions on mild or moderate breathlessness and self-evaluation of breathing on a linear scale. Workers with cough, wheeze, or breathlessness had significantly lower percent-predicted FEV1, and FEV1 decreased as the severity of breathlessness increased. Highly significant, dose-dependent associations with current cigarette smoking habit were found for cough, phlegm and wheeze. Significant, dose-dependent associations with phlegm, wheeze and mild breathlessness also occurred with exposure to sulfur dioxide. All of these relationships are similar to findings from studies of English-speaking populations. Minor problems with the original English ATS questionnaire were discovered on translation, and suggestions for improvements were made. Preliminary experience with this French translation suggests that it is a useful, comparable version of the English ATS questionnaire.

The aim of this survey, promoted by the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons, was to acquire information and advice from 'the field' in order to promote development of technology for thoracic surgery and to provide information for future guidelines on chest drainage. Society members were offered a questionnaire on the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons website (November 2006) composed of seven sections comprehending 21 detailed items. The questionnaire was completed by 120 centres, 100% performed lung surgery, 91.6% mediastinal surgery, 54.1% oesophageal surgery, 10% cardiothoracic surgery. The PVC straight drain (mean 55.9%) and silicon drain (mean 38.4%), water-valve/water suction disposable chest drainage collection system (mean 43.4%), one bottle (mean 24.8%), and two bottles with suction control (mean 18.2%), were the most frequently used. After pneumonectomy 51.2% used a balanced drainage system, 9% periodical thoracocentesis, 39.8% others. In 57.5-92% drainage suction was stopped <or=4 postoperative days and in 8-42.5% >4 postoperative days. In 17.6-60.7% drains were removed <or=4 postoperative days and in 39.3-82.4% >4 postoperative days. The survey demonstrates a trend toward the use of updated technical devices, high consideration of the costs, and clinical practice based on personal preferences.

Silicotuberculosis is an independent disease that arising in patients with silicosis from exacerbation of old tuberculous foci in the lung, less frequently in the lymph nodes and other organs. In silicotiberculosis, there are common secondary tuberculosis forms that are located mainly in the lung, which are rarely accompanied by a rapid progression. Characteristic morphological signs of early, nodal and nodular silicosis are observed. Silicotuberculosis is an independent disease that arises in patients from an exacerbation of old tuberculous foci in the lung, less frequently in the lymph nodes and other organs. In silicotuberculosis, there are usually secondary tuberculosis forms that are located mainly in the lung, which are rarely accompanied by a rapid progression. Thoracic and abdominal lymph nodes, lymphatic and blood vessels, the bronchi and pulmonary surfactant system were explored. In silicosis, tuberculosis, and silicotuberculosis, silicon levels and spodograms of some visceral organs were studied and trace elements were determined in the lung.
