The authors make an analysis of 11 cases of carcinosarcoma that have underwent surgery in the Clinic of Thoracic Surgery. The authors stress the rarity of these cases in their statistics. Only 11 carcinosarcomas have been identified out of a total of 2.500 cases of bronchopulmonary tumors operated in the Clinic. The difficulty of pre-operatory diagnosis is also stressed. Indications for surgical treatment are mandatory in all cases, even when the expected effects are palliative.

So-called carcinosarcoma of the esophagus is rare malignant tumors composed of carcinoma and sarcomataous components. We described a case of so-called carcinosarcoma and reviewed some literature. A 67-year-old man visited our hospital because of difficulty in swallowing, general fatigue, and sore throat. Barium swallow esophagogram showed a large polypoid lesion in the middle, lower thoracic esophagus. Endoscopy also demonstrated a pedunculated polypoid tumor. Histological examination of the biopsy specimen revealed malignant findings. Thoracic esophagectomy with cervical, thoracic, abdominal dissection was performed. A polypoid tumor, 10.5 x 5.2 x 3.5 cm in size, was removed. In the polypoid lesion, spindle-shaped cells made interlacing bundles similar to sarcoma and surrounded nests of squamous cell carcinoma. Near the pedicle, squamous cell carcinoma invaded muscularis mocosae. And lymph node metastasis was detected. Epitherial membrane antigen (EMA) was detected in some parts of the polypoid lesion. So according to Guide Lines for Clinical and Pathological Studies on Carcinoma of the Esophagus, this case was diagnosed as so called carcinosarcoma.

A Domestic Shorthaired cat was presented with coughing and severe respiratory distress. Thoracic radiographs revealed a lobar mass and numerous additional cavitated intrapulmonary masses. The cat was euthanized and submitted for necropsy. Histological examination of the large mass revealed 2 distinct neoplastic components consisting of bronchial adenocarcinoma admixed with neoplastic areas composed of highly atypical undifferentiated spindle cells (sarcomatous component). Simultaneous expression of vimentin and cytokeratin by a subpopulation of neoplastic epithelial cells and by rare neoplastic spindle cells was identified. On the basis of histology and immunohistochemical results, a diagnosis of primary pulmonary carcinosarcoma with intrapulmonary epithelial metastases was made. Pulmonary carcinosarcoma is a well-known pathological entity in humans. It is a rare tumor in animals and has not been previously reported in cat.

Pulmonary carcinosarcoma is a rare disease entity defined as a neoplasm, which has biphasic features consisting of both epithelial and sarcomatous components. It has been reported that the most frequent epithelial component is squamous cell carcinoma, while the most frequent sarcomatous component is rhabdomyosarcoma. Pulmonary carcinosarcomas with osteosarcoma components are even rarer. We report a case of a potentially curative resection for carcinosarcoma with an osteosarcoma component. Thoracic surgeons should be aware of this rare tumor when lung tumors with ossification are encountered.
