To determine the frequency with which liver metastases are visualized on bone scintigraphy, 425 pairs of liver and bone scans, performed within one month of each other, were reviewed. Sixty-three of the 425 liver scans showed metastases. Of these 63, five cases of carcinoma of the colon and six cases of carcinoma of the lung also visualized by Tc-99m MDP scintigraphy. This represented 46% of colon metastases and 15% of lung metastases detected on liver scan. Liver metastases from other primary tumors were not detected on bone scan, but the numbers for these tumors were small. The liver metastases which were detected on bone scan were significantly larger than those which were not. The literature was reviewed and the primary and secondary tumors of liver with uptake of Tc-99m phosphate compounds listed.

The authors present a case of extensive soft-tissue radioactivity visualized on both 99mTc-MDP and 201Tl-chloride scintigrams in a patient with dermatomyositis and colon cancer. Incidentally, diffuse and intense uptake of 99mTc-MDP was observed in the shoulder girdles, anterior chest wall, psoas muscles, both proximal thighs and right lower limb, corresponding to the sites of symptomatic muscles, even though skin lesions were limited and no calcification was detected on radiographs. Moreover, 201Tl-chloride was also intensely accumulated in nearly the same sites as the symptomatic muscles as shown on the 99mTc-MDP bone scintigrams. Whole-body scintigraphy with 99mTc-MDP and 201Tl-chloride is a useful tool to detect occult muscle lesions with dystrophic calcification and hyperemia in dermatomyositis.

Fermentation of dietary fiber within the colonic lumen yields short chain fatty acids (SCFA) such as butyrate, which may modulate colonic mucosal biology and inhibit the development of a malignant phenotype. However, different fibers yield varying proportions of various SCFA. We studied the effects of the three most common SCFA, acetate, butyrate, and propionate, on the proliferation, adhesion, and motility of the human intestinal Caco-2 cell line, as well as the effects of these SCFA on alkaline phosphatase and dipeptidyl dipeptidase specific activity (common laboratory markers of differentiation). In addition, we examined the modulation of c-myc protein and the tyrosine phosphorylation of cellular proteins by these SCFA in order to determine whether the variations in the potency of these three SCFA for phenotypic change extended to variations in effects on intracellular signaling and protooncogene expression. All three SCFA tended to slow proliferation, promote brush border enzyme activity, and inhibit both adhesion to and motility across a type I collagen matrix substrate. However, we observed substantial differences in the potency of these three SCFA with regard to these effects. In particular, butyrate was uniformly more potent than an equimolar concentration of acetate whereas equimolar propionate achieved comparable effects with regard to proliferation and brush border enzyme activity but was intermediate between butyrate and acetate with regard to modulation of cell-matrix interactions. Similarly, the SCFA downregulated c-myc protein levels and modulated the phosphorylation of several intracellular tyrosine phosphoproteins, but the effects of the three SCFA varied substantially for these parameters. These results suggest that the common short chain fatty acids are not equipotent in their effects on human Caco-2 colon cancer cell biology. Such differences in potency could contribute to the observed differences in effects of different dietary fibers in vivo.

Hepatic uptake on an MDP bone scan is a non-specific finding. When present, the etiology needs to be determined. The differential diagnosis depends on the pattern of uptake. Metastatic breast and colon cancer are frequent causes of focal faint uptake. Diffuse uptake is rare, but can be seen with hepatitis, amyloid, and IV gadolinium administration. In addition, aluminum breakthrough from the molybdenum generator can cause colloid formation and subsequent diffuse hepatic uptake. We present a case of diffuse uptake in a patient with acute hepatic failure. The etiology of the failure was extensive thrombosis of the inferior vena cava (IVC).

Myopericytoma is a rare type of unusual soft tissue tumor with perivascular myoid differentiation. A 53-year-old man with the diagnosis of colon cancer was referred to Tc-MDP bone scan and F-FDG PET/CT for staging. A subcutaneous mass located in right lower back with heterogeneous FDG uptake was detected on PET/CT. There was increased osteoblastic activity on MDP bone scan in the same region. Mass was resected and subsequently confirmed as myopericytoma by histopathology.
