There is increasing evidence that mild dehydration plays a role in the development of various morbidities. In this review, the effects of hydration status on chronic diseases are categorized according to the strength of the evidence. Positive effects of maintenance of good hydration are shown for urolithiasis (category lb evidence); constipation, exercise asthma, hypertonic dehydration in the infant, and hyperglycemia in diabetic ketoacidosis (all category IIb evidence); urinary tract infections, hypertension, fatal coronary heart disease, venous thromboembolism, and cerebral infarct (all category III evidence); and bronchopulmonary disorders (category IV evidence). For bladder and colon cancer, the evidence is inconsistent.

The use of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors for the treatment of type 2 diabetes is steadily increasing. SGLT2 inhibitors are associated with weight loss, lowering of blood pressure, and low hypoglycemia risk along with beneficial cardiovascular and renoprotective effects. In view of the increasing use of SGLT2i, physicians must be aware of their adverse effects. Euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis (euDKA) is a well-recognized adverse effect of SGLT2i. We present here a case of euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis secondary to dapagliflozin use in a type 2 diabetic patient with colon cancer. To the best of our knowledge, this is first report of SGLT2 inhibitor-associated euDKA in a patient with underlying colon cancer.

Development of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) caused by fulminant type 1 diabetes (FT1D) during administration of uracil-tegafur (UFT) with leucovorin (LV) as adjuvant chemotherapy is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of DKA caused by FT1D during administration of UFT with LV as adjuvant chemotherapy for colon cancer. A woman in her 60s was transferred to the emergency medical center of our hospital with complaints of impaired consciousness and vomiting. She had undergone left hemicolectomy and D3 lymph node dissection for transverse colon cancer 8 months earlier. She was provided UFT with LV as adjuvant chemotherapy. Laboratory analysis revealed hyperglycemia, high anion gap metabolic acidosis and urinary ketones. She was diagnosed with DKA and was started on intravenous infusion of fluid and continuous subcutaneous insulin injections. Following admission, she was examined and diagnosed with FT1D. The present case describes an extremely rare case of DKA caused by FT1D during adjuvant chemotherapy with UFT + LV for colon cancer.

Most of the malignant pancreatic lesions are primary pancreatic tumors with only a small percentage due to metastases. Pancreatic malignancies often present with symptoms such as jaundice and weight loss. Less commonly, new-onset diabetes mellitus has been seen in the setting of pancreatic adenocarcinomas. Although colon cancer commonly presents with metastatic disease, it typically spreads to the liver, lung, and peritoneum. We present a rare case of colon cancer metastatic to the pancreas presenting as diabetic ketoacidosis.
