Multiple primary cancers in a single individual are rare when more than three distinct lesions are considered. This article reports a patient who developed four separate primary cancers: squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx, squamous carcinoma of the lung, adenocarcinoma of the breast, and adenocarcinoma of the colon. No specific hereditary syndrome could be identified from this patient's pedigree. Individuals with a history of multiple cancers should have a complete family history evaluation and follow-up for development of subsequent primaries.

Metastases to the female breast are rare and those to the male breast are even rarer. Differentiating primary from metastatic breast carcinoma is important for rational therapy and avoidance of unnecessary radical surgery. Data on five women and two men with metastases to the breast are presented here. The primary tumours in these seven cases were as follows: three bronchogenic carcinoma and one each from papillary adenocarcinoma of the ovary, adenocarcinoma of the colon, squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal cavity and squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix. In both men (who had primary lung carcinoma), mammograms showed dense glandular tissue occupying nearly the entire breast. All five women had multiple nodules. Two of these cases were unilateral and three were bilateral. The metastatic nodules were round, with slightly irregular or ill-defined margins and calcification in the single case from metastatic papillary adenocarcinoma of the ovary. Ultrasonograms demonstrated well-circumscribed low-echoic masses in all cases. In a patient with known extramammary malignancy and a breast mass, mammograms and ultrasonograms should be undertaken to exclude a primary breast carcinoma and for proper management.

Neuronal progenitors and tumor cells possess propensity to proliferate and to migrate. Glutamate regulates proliferation and migration of neurons during development, but it is not known whether it influences proliferation and migration of tumor cells. We demonstrate that glutamate antagonists inhibit proliferation of human tumor cells. Colon adenocarcinoma, astrocytoma, and breast and lung carcinoma cells were most sensitive to the antiproliferative effect of the N-methyl-d-aspartate antagonist dizocilpine, whereas breast and lung carcinoma, colon adenocarcinoma, and neuroblastoma cells responded most favorably to the alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole-propionate antagonist GYKI52466. The antiproliferative effect of glutamate antagonists was Ca(2+) dependent and resulted from decreased cell division and increased cell death. Morphological alterations induced by glutamate antagonists in tumor cells consisted of reduced membrane ruffling and pseudopodial protrusions. Furthermore, glutamate antagonists decreased motility and invasive growth of tumor cells. These findings suggest anticancer potential of glutamate antagonists.

Involvement of granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in non-lymphohematopoietic malignant tumors accompanied by leukocytosis was clinicopathologically investigated. Among 1,778 autopsy cases in the last 20 years, 485 lesions of 439 cases with non-lymphohematopoietic malignant tumors accompanied by leukocytosis with a white blood cell count of 10,000/mm3 or greater during the course were immunohistologically examined for G-CSF and GM-CSF. Three (0.7%) and two cases (0.5%) were G-CSF- and GM-CSF-positive, respectively. GM-CSF mRNA was confirmed by using non-fixed cryopreserved tumor tissues in one case positive for GM-CSF. G-CSF-positive cases were large cell carcinoma of the lung, adenocarcinoma of the colon, and adenocarcinoma of the stomach, and GM-CSF-positive cases were spindle cell carcinoma of the lung and malignant thymoma. In the case with stomach carcinoma, the primary lesion showing moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma was negative, but the lung metastatic lesion showing less differentiated adenocarcinoma was G-CSF-positive. The survival period was six months or less in four out of five positive cases. The highest white blood cell count in five CSF-positive cases was markedly elevated: 29,400-103,500/mm3 (mean: 59,700/mm3). In four cases, excluding one case which may have been markedly affected by chemotherapy, the bone marrow showed hyperplasia, and the number of the granulocyte series cells significantly increased. There were three cases (0.7%) negative for both G-CSF and GM-CSF, although they showed marked leukocytosis (60,000/mm3 or higher) which were higher than the mean count of CSF-positive cases and was not observed in autopsy cases with non-tumorous diseases. Other stimulating factors may be involved in the development of leukocytosis in such cases.

The association between a multiple myeloma and a secondary solid tumor is not well established. Some reports showed an increased risk of secondary solid neoplasms in multiple myeloma patients, but others have not. Three cases of the synchronous occurrence of multiple myelomas and solid tumors, namely, a small cell carcinoma of the lung, an adenocarcinoma of the colon and a squamous carcinoma of the pyriform sinus were experienced at our hospital. Therefore, herein is reported the clinical courses and treatment results. The stage of multiple myeloma was Durie-Salmon stage I in all of three cases; therefore, the solid tumors were treated as a primary target because the prognosis of early stage multiple myeloma is generally better than that of advanced solid tumor, while a smoldering or stage I myeloma do not need primary therapy until progression of the multiple myeloma. Two patients died of their solid tumors, but one patient is alive.

This paper describes a case of cancer of the uterine cervix metastasizing in the spleen two years after the primary carcinoma was diagnosed and treated. After detailed diagnostics, the patient was subjected to surgery. Histopathological examination after splenectomy confirmed a very rare case - presence of metastases of planocellular carcinoma of the uterine cervix. Over the last ten years, references cite isolated cases of metastases of adenocarcinoma of the colon, stomach and breast in the spleen as well as lung carcinoma and malignant skin melanoma. Until now cases of uterine cervix carcinoma metastasizing to the spleen have been published as micrometastases detected in autopsy material.

31 crude extracts derived from 28 plants highly valued as anti-infective agents in Mexican folk medicine have been screened for antimicrobial activity against four bacteria, a yeast and two molds. The results of the quantitative study indicated that the extracts derived from five species (Malmea depressa, Heliopsis longipes, Datura lanosa, Cnidosculus tehuacanensis and Helianthella quinquenervis) possessed significant antiseptic properties, therefore supporting the ethnomedical uses of these species. The cytotoxic activity was assayed against three cell lines HT-29 (Colon adenocarcinoma), MCF-7 (Breast carcinoma), A-549 (Lung carcinoma) and only the extract of Helianthella quinquenervis possessed significant activity against the MCF-7 cell line.
