Blood group antigens (BGA) were stained by
PAP
methods and the relation between staining pattern (classified into five types: I, II, IIIa, IIIb and IV) and tumor prognosis was examined in 54 patients with primary superficial bladder tumor. The recurrence rate was significantly higher in BGA negative (Type IIIb or IV) or Type IIIa cases than in antigen positive (Type I or II) cases. Stage-up was observed only in BGA negative cases. Although staining pattern of recurrent tumor differed from that of
primary tumor
in some cases, it is believed that prediction of malignant potential should be performed at the primary development, when tumor has not been influenced by treatments. With regard to the relation between staining pattern and tumor prognosis, no significant difference was found between the cases of A, B and AB blood groups and those of O group.

Serum activities of bone alkaline phosphatase (b-ALP) and of tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (tr-ACP) were evaluated in 271 cancer patients; 120 of them had bone metastases (BM) and 151 had none. Correlation coefficients, specificities, sensitivities, negative and positive predicting values were computed. They showed the important contribution that these isoenzymes can bring to the diagnosis of BM in 80 patients with prostate cancer, and to the followup of 191 patients with breast cancer. The assay results were analysed in parallel with bone scan and radiography. They were also compared to those of serum antigens: PSA and

for prostate cancer, and CEA and CA15.3 for breast cancer. These results clearly indicate that both isoenzymes are better correlated with BM than antigens, these antigens being markers of the whole tumor burden--

In this study, liver metastases from a patient with a pancreatic glucagonoma producing the syndrome have been investigated histologically, ultrastructurally, and immunocytochemically. A comparison has also been made between the metastases and the primary pancreatic tumor investigated in a parallel study. In the metastatic tissue, glucagon-, pancreatic polypeptide (PP)-, and somatostatin-containing cells were found together with a majority of cells without any immunoreactivity. Glucagon-positive cells were much more numerous than PP- and somatostatin-immunoreactive cells. As in the

, double immunogold staining of ultrathin sections demonstrated the co-existence of glucagon and PP immunoreactivities in most of the granulated cells, but PP immunolabeling was often faint, so that it probably could not be revealed by the

In the presence of prevalent bone metastases, the precise histo-pathological diagnosis of the
primary tumor
is often difficult. The authors study the diagnostic value of systematic serum assay of a series of tumoral tracers (ACE, AFP,

and PSA, SCC, CA 19:9, CA 15:3, CA 125) which until now were used in evolutive and therapeutic monitoring. 34 patients were selected for this preliminary retrospective study (including 20 with a demonstrated histopathological diagnosis). 70 p. cent of prevalent bone metastases express a target tracer corresponding to the initial location. In some cases, an elevated tracer, because of its specificity, may bring about a diagnostic or therapeutic decision (always according to the context). No conclusion may currently be drawn in case of discordance between the anatomo-clinical context and the "profile" of the markers (1 case in our series).

Diethylstilbestrol (DES) treatment of a male Syrian hamster resulted in the development of a renal tumor and its widely scattered serosal metastases. Cells in both the

and metastatic nodules contained secretory granules. The tumors were transplanted serially into DES-supported and non-DES-supported host hamsters until DES-independent tumors developed. Rabbit antiserum to mouse salivary renin and rabbit antiserum to rat kidney resin were reacted with sections of the

and Vector-ABC-AP procedures. Renin-positive material was observed in all tumors. Plasma renin activity (PRA) was determined for the host hamsters carrying the renal tumor transplants and compared to the PRA values that had been determined for normal non-DES-treated male and female hamsters. It was found that the average PRA values of host hamsters carrying the tumor transplants were significantly higher than the normal PRA values.

Prostate cancer with marked neuroendocrine (NE) differentiation belongs to the hormone resistant carcinomas. We report the development of TSH-secreting small cell prostate cancer (SCPC) from high grade adenocarcinoma (Gleason score 8) with an elevated number of chromogranin A positive cells located in benign structures adjacent to the cancer. Conversion to SCPC was followed-up during 4 years. The initial adenocarcinoma exerted a stronger positivity for
PAP
than for PSA (respective staining indexes, Sls, 2.2 and 1.8, maximum staining 3.0). In the developed SCPC, 2 cell subpopulations that were derived from epithelial cells were found (positive stain for EMA and CEA, respectively) and from one of them originated CEA-positive liver metastases. Blood CEA and NSE levels were elevated in SCPC (284 ng/ml and 24.5 ng/ml). However, blood TPS level which reflects proliferation of epithelial cells was within the normal range. lesions of breast and bronchogenic carcinomas, to see if the expression of theses antigens was linked with several clinicopathological parameters associated with tumor aggressivity, such as abnormal cellular DNA content. We compared tumor tissues with nonneoplastic tissues and tissues from 15 benign breast lesions. HLA class I expressor and nonexpressor tumor cells were determined by using immunohistochemical stains (
PAP
and APAAP methods) and antibodies against these antigens. Reduction of HLA class I antigen was detected in 65 tumors (31.7%) and was significantly associated with poor tumor differentiation and abnormal cellular DNA content (p < 0.001). These characteristics might define a group of aggressive tumors in which the decrease of HLA class I antigens would enable tumor cells to avoid eliciting host immune responses. On the other hand, the altered regulatory mechanisms, of tumors with abnormal cellular DNA content, might modulate the expression of HLA class I molecules.

The treatments and prognoses of pelvic organ carcinomas differ, depending on whether the
primary tumor
originated in the rectum, urinary bladder, prostate, ovary, or uterus; therefore, it is essential to diagnose pathologically the primary origin and stages of these tumors. To establish the panels of immunohistochemical markers for differential diagnosis, we reviewed 91 of the NCBI articles on these topics and found that the results correlated closely with those of the public protein database, the Human Protein Atlas. The results revealed the panels of immunohistochemical markers for the differential diagnosis of rectal adenocarcinoma, in which [+] designates positivity in rectal adenocarcinoma and [-] designates negativity in rectal adenocarcinoma: from bladder adenocarcinoma, CDX2[+], VIL1[+], KRT7[-], THBD[-] and UPK3A[-]; from prostate adenocarcinoma, CDX2[+], VIL1[+], CEACAM5[+], KLK3(PSA)[-], ACPP(

)[-] and SLC45A3(prostein)[-]; and from ovarian mucinous adenocarcinoma, CEACAM5[+], VIL1[+], CDX2[+], KRT7[-] and MUC5AC[-]. The panels of markers distinguishing ovarian serous adenocarcinoma, cervical carcinoma, and endometrial adenocarcinoma were also represented. Such a comprehensive review on the differential diagnosis of carcinomas of pelvic organs has not been reported before.
