Erythropoietin (ESF) levels were assayed in rats bearing the Wistar-Furth Wilms' transplantable tumor. Sites of tumor inoculation varied from subcutaneous, intramuscular, intrarenal (subcapsular), to intraperitoneal. Two-thirds of the animals exhibited ESF elevations without polycythemia, or severe anemia (HCT less than 30.0 vol%). The elevations of ESF were not detectably related to the time of sacrifice (age of the animal), size of the primary tumor, or number of gross metastatic foci. The diminished ESF response noted to animals given intramuscular tumor implantations is believed to reflect differences in tumor blood and lymphatic supply at the various sites of inoculation. The pattern of ESF responses in the Wistar-Furth Wilms' tumor model is thus quite similar to that which we have observed in man, and appears to represent an animal model for tumor-related ectopic hormone release. The nature of the hormone is believed to differ from that seen in normal physiological states.

The observation of a non-metastatic reactive hepatopathy associated with a hypernephroma in a 39-year-old man who had had fever for 4 months led to a review of the literature and an analysis of basically three aspects of the disorder: a) The various manifestations of carcinoma of the kidney, which include a large number of paraneoplastic clinical symptoms (polycythemia, anemia, prolonged fever, hypercalcemia, hypertension, nefropathy, loss of salt, peripheral neuropathy, and amyloidosis); b) an alteracion of hepatic function known since 1961 which is characterized by an abnormal retention of sulfobromophthalein, increase of alkaline phosphatase, prothrombin decrease, dysproteinemia with hypoalbuminemia, and alpha2-globulin increase. It may or may not be accompanied by enlargement of the liver. c) Criteria of operability of the primary tumor.

A transplantable rat pheochromocytoma in New England Deaconess Hospital (NEDH) was first described by WARREN in 1972. It is characterized by the documented association with systolic hypertension and the known presence of increased urinary metanephrines and vanilmadelic acid in tumor-bearing animals. The present report describes features of the transplantable tumor, our laboratories have noted, in five tumor transplantations starting in 1974. Tumor-bearing animals survive 49 +/- 5 days and die much sooner than aging, non-tumor-bearing litter mates. Gross measurements confirm the rapid growth of the primary tumor, although at autopsy, histologically proven metastatic foci are rarely seen. Polycythemia with or without increased erythropoietin (ESF) levels were not detected. Electronmicroscopic studies confirmed the presence in tumor tissue of the previously described intracytoplasmic granules. Further studies on this endocrine-associated transplantable tumor are warranted and feasible.
