Radiation cystitis with macroscopic hematuria has been a frustrating clinical problem for urologists. Since 1985 hyperbaric
oxygen
(HBO) has been used to treat this disease, showing favorable results. Between November 1989 and October 1992, 20 female patients with hemorrhagic radiation cystitis were treated with HBO at a pressure of 2.5 atm abs, breathing 100% O2 for 100 min in our multiplace hyperbaric chamber. After an average of 44 HBO sessions, macroscopic hematuria was completely halted in 16 patients (80%) and markedly decreased in 2 patients (10%). Comparison of the cystoscopic findings before and after HBO showed a significant decrease in hemorrhagic sites and telangiectasis of the bladder mucosa. One patient had
urinary frequency
and urgency without hematuria during her hospital stay. After 30 sessions of HBO therapy, her symptoms subsided, and the cystoscopic findings were much improved. Only one patient failed to respond to HBO and underwent ileal conduit diversion. The mean follow-up period was 14 mo. (5-41 mo.). From our clinical results and cystoscopic findings, we suggest that HBO is an effective and safe treatment for hemorrhagic radiation cystitis.

The aim of the study was to clarify the role of hypoxia of detrusor as a component of aging in establishment of urination disorders in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). A total of 54 patients were examined. Whether the capacity of detrusor to absorb
oxygen
was affected or not was judged by the difference in
oxygen
tension and acid-base balance in blood samples obtained intraoperatively from a radialis, v. mediana cubiti, v. vesicalis in 30 patients (experimental group) versus control values (5 females operated for stenosis of the distal ureter, ureterovaginal fistulas). The findings provided evidence for marked hypoxia of the detrusor diminishing reservoir function of the bladder and promoting urination disorders. A course of hyperbaric oxygenation given to 17 BPH patients has improved the capacity of the bladder for urine accumulation, reduced
pollakiuria
, especially at night. This supports involvement of detrusor hypoxia in pathogenesis of urination disorders in BPH patients.

We treated two cases of interstitial cystitis (IC) that were resistant to some conventional therapies with hyperbaric
oxygen
(HBO). Both patients underwent 20 sessions of 100%
oxygen
inhalation (2.0 atmosphere absolute for 60 min/day x 5 days/week for 4 weeks) in a hyperbaric chamber. The period of follow up was 12 months for case 1 and 9 months for case 2. After a course of HBO, the bladder mucosal ulcer (Hunner's ulcer) disappeared, and changes from baseline in pain and
urinary frequency
was constitutively inhibited. There were no adverse events during the 20 treatment sessions. One woman (case 1) had mild Eustachian tube dysfunction, resulting in a transient hearing impairment. HBO seems to be an option for treatment of IC resistant to conventional therapies.

Introduction. Chronic inflammation of the urinary bladder (CIB) is a disease entity which mostly concerns young women and which is connected with their short urether and vicinity of vagina sexual activity. Frequent recidication, in spite of use of new generation of antibiotics - often of considerable cost - have a significant influence upon life of the patients. Side-effects connected with frequent use of antibiotics are also an important factor to consider.
Aim. The life discomfort of the patients, frequently low effectiveness and side-effects of antibiotherapy, numerous cases of recidivation were the reasons of application of medical ozone in chronic inflammation of the urinary bladder.
Material and method. During 18 months
oxygen
-ozone mixture was applied directly to the blader in case of 72 patients, to 65 women, that is 90% of patients, and to 7 men, that is 10% of patients. The age group was 19 to 67, with the average age of 36. In case of men, the age group was from 38 to 51, with the average age of 44. The number of procedures, depending both on bacteriological results and subjective symptoms, veried from 10 to 18. Ecery patient, prior to the ozonotherapy underwent general urine analysis and bacteriological tests; also subjective symptoms as pollysis and bacteriological tests; also subjective symptoms as
pollakiuria
, pain and burning during miction, and pressing tenesmus were estimated, according to QL life comfort scale.
Those tests were repeated three and six months after the ozonotherapy procedures.
Results. In the women group (in all cases) statistically significant improvement of life comfort was noted. Results of bacteriological tests after one month and three months were germ-free, after six months bacteriological results of 4 patients, that is 6% showed initial results with relapse of subjective symptoms. Which are statistically significant improvement in the case of remaining 47 patients, that is 72% germ-free culture were gained and lack of subjective symptoms. In the 6 patients (that is 86%) men group, after six months, in all cases germ-free-culture and lack of subjective symptoms were gained.
Conclusion. Application of ozonotherapy in treatment of chronic inflammation of the vladder is a of significant statistical effectiveness method, and what is more cheap and with low risk in performance.

A 10-year-old male castrated Maltese was referred with clinical signs of hematuria, stranguria, and
pollakiuria
. The dog was diagnosed with sterile hemorrhagic cystitis with urethroliths and cystoliths. To remove the uroliths, the dog underwent retrograde urohydropropulsion followed by a cystotomy. The following day, persistent bleeding in the urinary bladder was identified with large hematoma, hematuria and anemia. In order to reduce bleeding, the dog received 10 mg/kg of tranexamic acid (TXA) intravenously. Immediately after TXA administration, the dog developed anaphylactic shock manifested by hypotension, hypothermia, tachycardia and a dull mentation. Thus, an emergency treatment including bolus injection of crystalloid, administration of dexamethasone and diphenhydramine, and
oxygen
supplementation was given, after which the dog quickly recovered within a few minutes.
