A total of 499 female patients with acute uncomplicated cystitis were observed and analyzed clinically for age distribution, characteristics of symptoms, bacterial culture of urine, behavioral aspects of
recurrent cystitis
and others. The patients were between 3 years and 88 years old (average: 43 years) and the majority of patients were from 20 to 69 years old. From 81.1% of the patients Escherichia coli was detected, followed by Staphylococcus spp (11.2%). The major symptoms were pain on urination (421 cases),
urinary frequency
(421 cases) and residual urine sensation (418 cases). The major causes of cystitis as reported by the patient were fatigue (131 cases), infrequent voiding (114 cases) and exposing the body to coldness (103); only 42 patients reported a relationship between sexual intercourse and cystitis. The patients who had been suffering from "honeymoon cystitis" were significantly inclined to be suffering from acute uncomplicated cystitis again in comparison with those who had not suffered from honeymoon cystitis. There was suggested to be a relationship between sexual intercourse and
recurrent cystitis
.

The authors emphasise the importance of radiological investigation of all children with urological infections. The key studies are complete intravenous urography and retrograde cystography. A broad sub-division of situations may be used to draw a distinction between
recurrent cystitis
in the young girl with an organic cause (urethral stenosis) and
recurrent cystitis
of functional origin. Organic urethral stenosis may be diagnosed immediately on the basis of radiological findings of an association of vesical hypertrophy and a permanent narrowing of the distal urethra with proximal dilatation, persisting during the different phases of micturition. This possibility is rare. By contrast, functional causes are much more common: spasm of the striate sphincter, absence of inhibition of the bladder, neurological dysfunction resulting in a non-neurogenic neurogenic bladder. There remains
recurrent cystitis
due to insufficiently
frequent micturition
. Analysis of the factors actually responsible for recurrent infections in any given child may be made difficult when they are present in association.

It is known that a great number of subjects, mainly little girls, frequently go to pediatric's observation for recurrent episodes of
pollakiuria
, dysuria or burning miction. They often complain enuresis, sometimes tenesmus so intense that they arrive at the incontinence (urge incontinence). Many of these cases, quickly defined as cystitis, really revealed that they weren't. Repetitively negative bacteriologic examinations allow us to classify them as "sham syndromes", as Stephens called them. According to what we said above, we wondered whether any
recurrent cystitis
are not favoured by missed observation of definite rules.

Pearsonema
spp. nematodes infect the urinary bladder of domestic and wild carnivores. The red fox is considered a reservoir of
Pearsonema plica
, while the prevalence of
Pearsonema
spp. in domestic carnivores is still poorly known. This study aimed to assess the occurrence of
Pearsonema
spp. infection in privately owned cats (26) and dogs (83) from central and northern Italy alongside occurrence in red foxes (42) from central Italy. In positive dogs and cats, associated clinical signs were also evaluated. Urine samples were first examined under a stereomicroscope; then, they were centrifuged and microscopically examined after a flotation test. As for foxes, the urinary bladders were opened and urine was collected and processed as above, while collected nematodes were identified at the species level. Among examined animals, 2/26 cats (7.7%), 1/83 dogs (1.2%), and 38/42 foxes (90.5%) scored positive.
Recurrent cystitis
,
pollakiuria
, and hematuria were the main clinical signs in symptomatic dogs and cats. This is the first study on
Pearsonema
spp. infection in domestic carnivores examining a large number of privately owned pet animals. Obtained results confirm the role of the red fox as a reservoir for
P. plica
and suggest a possible high occurrence of
Pearsonema
spp. infection in domestic cats of central Italy.
