5 major criteria are used to evaluate family planning methods: efficacy, both theoretical and practical; acceptability as measured by continuation of use; safety; reversibility; and cost, including the cost of treatment, follow-up, and screening for contraindications. Traditional family planning methods are mostly based on periodic abstinence during the presumed fertile period. The calendar, temperature, Billings or cervical mucus, and symptothermal methods are based on observation of different symptoms of ovulation and fertility. Their advantages are that they do not require intervention by health personnel, their costs of use are nil, and they are morally acceptable to some couples. Their efficacy is lower than that of other methods and they should be viewed as methods to space rather than limit births. The withdrawal method, also less effective, requires active cooperation by the male partner. Among mechanical methods, the use of condoms has increased recently because of the protection they offer against HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases. Their efficacy depends on correct use, regular use, and the quality of the condom. The Pearl index varies from 93099 per 100 woman-years. The diaphragm must be individually measured and should be used with spermicides. The Pearl index ranges from 85095 per 100 woman-years. Spermicides, generally either nonoxynol-9 or benzalkonium chloride, are surfactants that have a Pearl index of 83-97 per 100 woman-years. They are available as creams, jellies, foams, suppositories, tablets, or impregnated sponges. Most failures appear due to errors of utilization. The mechanism of action of the IUD is imperfectly understood, but it is known to prevent nidation of the fertilized egg. Copper devised have higher rates of efficacy and tolerance. Pearl indices range from 95-99.5. Contraindications include genital infection, uterine anomalies, valvular cardiopathy, and coagulation problems. The IUD is relatively contraindicated if there is history of ectopic pregnancy or upper genital tract infections. The combined oral contraceptive is the most widely utilized method in France. The Pearl index is nearly 100 in the absence of forgetting, vomiting, or drug interactions. The contraindications are basically those of estrogens: history of thrombosis, prolonged bedrest, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hepatic disorders, hormonodependent cancers, or smoking after age 35. Progestin-only methods are available in 3 forms: low-dose pills which must be taken at the same time each day, higher-dosed progestins taken for 20 days each month, and injectable progestins providing contraception for 8-12 weeks. Postcoital contraception using OCs or IUDs is possible but not well known among women or physicians. The Neuwirth law authorizing use of contraception in France was passed in 1967. Amendments in 1974 improved access and provided for reimbursement for some methods, but some newer forms are not reimbursed.

In this paper five multivariable adaptive and classical control strategies have been studied and implemented in a simulator of the copper grinding plant of CODELCO-Andina. The strategies presented were compared and, according to theory, exhibit good behavior. The extended horizon, pole-placement and model reference multivariable adaptive control strategies were formulated in discrete-time and use a model of the plant whose parameters are updated on line using the recursive least squares method along with UD factorization of the covariance matrix and variable forgetting factor. The direct Nyquist array and sequential loop closing techniques were also studied and simulated. The two-by-two multivariable system chosen to represent the grinding plant has the percentage of solids (density) of the pulp fed to the hydrocyclones (which is highly correlated with the percentage of +65 mesh in the overflow of hydrocyclones) and the sump level as output (controlled) variables. The water flow added to the sump and the speed of the pump are its input (manipulated) variables. All the algorithms tested by simulation exhibited good performance and were able to control the grinding plant in a stable fashion. Adaptive algorithms showed better performance than classical techniques, with the extended horizon and pole-placement algorithms proving to be the best. The fact that adaptive algorithms continuously adjust their parameters renders such controllers superior to those based on fixed parameters.

If used correctly, only 2 out of every 100 women using a diaphragm would conceive over a year; however, because of forgetfulness the figure increases to 19 out of every 100. With good care they can last up to 12 years. The contraceptive sponge works because of the sperm-killing ingredients in the spermicide and because it blocks the cervix. The condom may also provide some protection against a variety of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), such as herpes and gonorrhea. Missing one day of a low-dose oral contraceptive formulation (35 mcg) will have no consequences since the pill works by keeping hormone levels in the body elevated over time. With IUDs the only potential pitfall is forgetting to check for the tail every week of the first month and once a month thereafter to be sure the IUD is still in place. Some physicians suggest using a second form of contraception for the first three months after an IUD is inserted, since the odds are slightly higher it will be dislodged during this time. The manufacturers of Cu-7's and Cu-T's, as well as most physicians, recommend replacement of this device every three years. Experts are in agreement, however, that copper-containing IUDs carry a slightly lower risk of infection than Progestasert and the Lippes Loop. For postcoital contraception douching or using a spermicide within 10 minutes may help a bit. Although an IUD insertion can prevent pregnancy 90-95% of the time if it is done within five days of unprotected intercourse, because of the infection risk, this is not recommended unless a woman is planning on leaving the device in place as a contraceptive. The morning-after pill also works by preventing implantation of the fertilized egg. Taking two within 24 hours and two more 12 hours later prevents pregnancy 90-95% of the time, possibly with mild nausea or headache.

In the present investigation, we have fabricated copper oxide (CuO) thin film memristor by employing a hydrothermal method for neuromorphic application. The X-ray diffraction pattern confirms the films are polycrystalline in nature with the monoclinic crystal structure. The developed devices show analog memory and synaptic property similar to biological neuron. The size dependent synaptic behavior is investigated for as-prepared and annealed CuO memristor. The results suggested that the magnitude of synaptic weights and resistive switching voltages are dependent on the thickness of the active layer. Synaptic weights are improved in the case of the as-prepared device whereas they are inferior for annealed CuO memristor. The rectifying property similar to a biological neuron is observed only for the as-prepared device, which suggested that as-prepared devices have better computational and learning capabilities than annealed CuO memristor. Moreover, the retention loss of the CuO memristor is in good agreement with the forgetting curve of human memory. The results suggested that hydrothermally grown CuO thin film memristor is a potential candidate for the neuromorphic device development.
