20 patients with endometrial carcinoma received injections of 17-hydroxynorprogesterone capronate (Depostat, average dose 1000 mg) within 14 days after a 1st abrasion. The number of mitoses was studied in abrasion material obtained immediately before and after this treatment. In 50% of patients the number of mitoses had decreased by more than 50%, in 5 patients by more than 80%. The average decrease was 50%, identical with results obtained using nortestosterone preparations. A larger decrease was found in differentiated carcinomas than in undifferentiated carcinomas. In the control group of 25 patients, a small increase in the number of mitoses was found in the 2nd abrasion. Gestagen treatment of endometrial carcinoma appears reasonable, particularly in the progressive stage, and also in combination with pre- and postoperative primary treatment.
