The purpose of this work was to study changes in serum levels of interleukins, growth factors and angiogenin during different stages of
endometrial cancer
progression. Serum levels were assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay in 59 women with stages I-IV of
endometrial cancer
(study subjects: stage I, n = 20; stage II, n = 8; stage III, n = 5; stage IV, n = 6) and compared to the serum levels in 20 women without cancer as control subjects. Patients with
endometrial cancer
had varied serum levels of interleukins and growth factors. There was a significant increase in serum levels of angiogenin in all stages of tumor progression. Levels of interleukin-8 (IL-8), IL-10 and transforming growth factor beta (TGF beta) were significantly elevated in patients with stages I and II carcinoma. The serum levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha),
granulocyte
/macrophage-colony-stimulating factor, basic fibroblast growth factor (BFGF), IL-7 and IL-2 were significantly elevated in patients with stages II and III carcinoma and the serum level of tumor necrosis factor beta (TNF beta) was slightly elevated in patients with stage II carcinoma only. The serum levels of IL-1 alpha, IL-1 beta and IL-6 were not elevated in
endometrial cancer
patients in any of the clinical stages. The results showed that progression of
endometrial cancer
is associated with increased serum levels of cytokines, growth factors and angiogenin, which possibly amplify angiogenesis during different clinical stages.

It is known that G-CSF not only stimulates the granulopoiesis but also regulates the functions of mature neutrophils. Indirect evidence of this might be the increase of the activity of
granulocyte
enzymes participating in phagocytosis and killing tumor cells. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate in the plasma of breast cancer patients the level of adhesion molecule--sL-selectin, as a measure of maturate
granulocyte
activity and MPO--enzyme of
granulocyte
, responsible for the cytotoxicity. Additionally we have investigated the plasma level of G-CSF which can increase in the cancers. We tested 17 patients with I stage
endometrial cancer
and 19 patients with I stage cervical cancer. Plasma samples were drawn before operation. The control group consisted of 20 healthy women. The plasma levels of sL-selectin, myeloperoxidase and G-CSF were measured using a sensitive sandwich ELISA system. In gynecological cancer patients sL-selectin concentration was decreased, but myeloperoxidase concentration increased in comparison to the control group. G-CSF level in group with
endometrial cancer
was similar to the control group, but in group with cervical cancer was significantly lower. These results suggest that ability of
granulocyte
binding to cancer cells is decreased but cytotoxicity is increased, at lack of stimulation by of G-CSF.

Hematopoietic cytokines have been implicated in the pathogenesis of malignant diseases. This study compared the diagnostic utility of hematopoietic growth factors with commonly accepted tumor marker (CA 125) in the early stages (I and II) of
endometrial cancer
(EC) patients (65) in relation to the control groups: uterine myoma patients (40) and healthy subjects (45). The pretreatment plasma levels of interleukin 3, stem cell factor, granulocyte-macrophage-colony stimulating factor,
granulocyte
-colony stimulating factor, and macrophage-colony stimulating factor (M-CSF) were determined by the use of immunoenzyme assay, and those of CA 125 were determined by chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay. Our results have demonstrated significant differences in the concentration of cytokines and CA 125 between the groups of EC patients, uterine myoma patients, and the healthy controls. M-CSF has demonstrated equal to CA 125 or higher values of the diagnostic sensitivity, the predictive values of positive and negative test results, and the area under the receiver-operating characteristics curve in the tested groups. These findings suggest the usefulness of M-CSF in the diagnosis of EC and uterine myomas.

Egg white intake during chemotherapy is common advice for cancer patients for the prevention of leukopenia. However, the benefit is uncertain. We conducted this prospective study to identify the relationship of egg white intake for gynecologic cancer patients who received carboplatin and paclitaxel and the occurrence of leukopenia. Between January 2014 and January, 2015, 81 patients were interviewed regarding their intake of egg whites before receiving subsequent chemotherapy. The basic data, the details of egg white intake and the grade of leukopenia in the previous cycle were recorded. The mean age was 54.1 years and 80% of the patients had a diagnosis of ovarian or
endometrial cancer
. The patients were interviewed at cycles 1-3 in 45 cases, 4-6 in 45 cases and 7-9 in two cases. Subsequent dose reduction was found in 6.2% and
granulocyte
-stimulating growth factors was given at 4.9%. All the patients ate egg whites with variations in the number of eggs per day as follows: less than one (3), one to two (56), three to four (14) and five to six (8). Over 70% were recommended by nurses to eat egg whites and about 63% of patients received other supplemental food. Some 44.1% of the patients who ate less than or equal to two eggs per day and 36.4% who ate more than two eggs per day developed grade 2-4 leukopenia, P = 0.61. In conclusion, the data did not provide evidence in support of the conclusion that a greater egg white intake could significantly reduce the occurrence of leukopenia.

A 71-year-old female with advanced
endometrial cancer
was treated with pegfilgrastim. She developed a fever within seven days, and contrast-enhanced computed tomography scans repeated within three days revealed rapidly progressive thickening of the aortic wall. When clinicians administer PEGylated
granulocyte
-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) to cancer patients, drug-associated vasculitis should be suspected. This report discusses the manifestation of G-CSF-associated large-vessel vasculitis (LVV).
