The effects on the calcium oxalate urolithiasis urinary risk factors of "Rosa Canina", in herb infusion form, and magnesium chloride have been studied using female Wistar rats under balanced dietary conditions. No significant effects on the volume of liquids drunk or on creatinine, phosphate, and oxalate urinary concentrations and excretions were observed. The herb infusion did not cause any diuretic effect. Calciuria decreased and citraturia increased when taking the herb infusion, and vice versa when taking magnesium chloride. Magnesium chloride decreased the urinary pH value, but this effect was not observed when magnesium chloride was administered with herb infusion. In conclusion, the same beneficial effects of the studied infusion herb on calcium oxalate urolithiasis urinary risk factors can be clearly detected. An interesting fact is that it seems that some possible effects depend on dietary components, thus, i.e., an increase in the urinary pH was only detected when the intake of the herb infusion was studied in a magnesium chloride-supplemented diet.

The in vitro cation-induced aggregation properties of cat Tamm-Horsfall protein (cTHP), a urinary glycoprotein, were examined and related to the potential role of cTHP in feline urolithiasis. The aggregation assay involved adding either CaCl2, MgCl2, or NaCl to solutions containing purified cTHP, and then separating the aggregated cTHP by centrifugation. The concentration of cTHP remaining in the supernatant was quantified using a previously developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The effect that buffer pH, cTHP concentration, and urea concentration had on cTHP aggregation also were examined. Of the three salts, CaCl2 consistently was most efficient at precipitating cTHP, while MgCl2 was slightly less efficient. At least ten times more NaCl than CaCl2 or MgCl2 was required for comparable cTHP aggregation. As the pH decreased, increasing concentrations of the salts were required to aggregate cTHP. Increased amounts of CaCl2 and MgCl2 also were required to aggregate cTHP when the urea concentration was increased. As cTHP concentration increased within the physiological range, lower concentrations of CaCl2 and MgCl2 were required to precipitate 50% of the cTHP. Several aspects of the in vitro aggregation properties of cTHP correlate closely with previously identified risk factors for feline urolithiasis, strengthening the theory that cTHP aggregation may be important in this disease.

Aims of our work were to appraise the quantity and nature of renal calcifications and mineral metabolism in the magnesium-deficient rats; and to find out whether the combination of pyridoxine with Mg L-aspartate or Mg chloride will reduce the length of the treatment needed to recover rats from magnesium deficient condition and urolithiasis state. To induce hypomagnesemia, fifty rats were placed on a magnesium-deficient diet (magnesium content < or = 15 mg/kg) and demineralized water for 10 weeks.
