A facile solution-phase process has been demonstrated for the selective preparation of single-crystalline bismuth nanowires and nanospheres by reducing sodium bismuthate with ethylene glycol in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) or acetone. Bismuth nanobelts and Bi/Bi(2)O(3) nanocables could be also obtained by changing some reaction parameters. Various techniques such as XRD, EDXA, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, and FT-IR have been used to investigate the physical characteristics of these low-dimensional bismuth nanostructures.

Blends of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH; 44 mol% ethylene) and polyamide 6/66 (PA; 75 mol% PA 6) random copolymers were studied in the entire composition range. Specific interaction between the components was analyzed by IR spectroscopy; furthermore, coefficients related to the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter were derived from equilibrium water uptake and tensile strength. Morphology of the blends was investigated by thermal analysis (DSC), density measurements, and SEM micrographs. The two polymers form heterogeneous blends in each composition. Although the components crystallize in separate phases, the morphology and the mechanical properties are greatly affected by the association of OH and NH groups. Crystallization is restricted in the blends, and the increase of the amorphous fraction, as well as specific interaction between the components, results in essential improvement in the mechanical properties.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels prepared by freeze-thawing procedure represent synthetic systems widely investigated as non-biodegradable scaffolds for tissue regeneration. In order to improve the biocompatibility properties of pure poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels, blends of PVA with different biological macromolecules, such hyaluronic acid, dextran, and gelatin were prepared and used to produce "bioartificial hydrogels". The porosity characteristics of these hydrogels were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry. The morphology of bioartificial hydrogels was evaluated and compared with that of pure PVA hydrogels. In particular the effect exerted by each biological component on pore size and distribution was investigated. The obtained results indicate that when a natural macromolecule is added to PVA the internal structure of the material changes. A small amount of biopolymer induces the structural elements of PVA matrix to take on a well evident lamellar appearance and an apparent preferential orientation. Comparing the results of SEM and mercury intrusion porosimetry it was concluded that hydrogels containing 20% of biological component have the most regular structure and at the same time the lowest total porosity. On the contrary samples with the highest content of natural polymer (40%) show the less regular structure and the highest total porosity.

Through sol-gel processing and electrospinning technique, extrathin fibers of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/lithium chloride/manganese acetate composite fibers were prepared. After calcination of the above precursor fibers at 600 degrees C, the spinel lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) nanofibers, with a diameter of 100-200 nm, were successfully obtained. The fibers were investigated by TG-DTA, XRD, FT-IR, and SEM, respectively. The results showed that the crystalline phase and morphology of the fibers were largely influenced by the calcination temperature.

Saw dust-reinforced linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) (1:1) composites were prepared by using ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVAL) as adhesion promoter to improve mechanical strength. To evaluate the optimum vinylalcohol (VA) content in EVAL, various EVAL samples containing different contents of VA were used. The tensile properties of saw dust-LLDPE composites were improved by using EVAL as adhesion promoter in place of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVAc). The saw dust-LLDPE composites prepared with EVAL containing 15 mol% VA showed the maximum yield stress and modulus. The tensile stress increased with addition of EVAL up to 3wt% on the wood filler, and then leveled off in the range of 3-10 wt%. However, the elongation was decreased with increasing VA content. Hydrogen bonding interaction between saw dust and EVAL was detected by FT-IR spectra. When EVAL consisting with 15 mol% VA was used, good adhesion between saw dust and LLDPE matrix was confirmed by SEM fractography.

The effect of pH on the complexation of poly(acrylic acid) with poly(vinyl alcohol) in aqueous solution, the miscibility of these polymers in the solid state and the possibility for crosslinking the blends using gamma radiation has been studied. It is demonstrated that the complexation ability of poly(vinyl alcohol) with respect to poly(acrylic acid) is relatively low in comparison with some other synthetic non-ionic polymers. The precipitation of interpolymer complexes was observed below the critical pH of complexation (pH(crit1)), which characterizes the transition between a compact hydrophobic polycomplex and an extended hydrophilic interpolymer associate. Films prepared by casting from aqueous solutions at different pH values exhibited a transition from miscibility to immiscibility at a certain critical pH, pH(crit2), above which hydrogen bonding is prevented. It is shown here that gamma radiation crosslinking of solid blends is efficient and only results in the formation of hydrogel films for blends prepared between pH(crit1) and pH(crit2). The yield of the gel fraction and the swelling properties of the films depended on the absorbed radiation dose and the polymer ratio. Organic-inorganic composite membranes based on poly(vinyl alcohol)/SiO(2) were prepared via an aqueous dispersion polymerization route and anion-exchange groups were introduced in the membrane matrix by the chemical grafting of 4-vinylpyridine with the desired content. These membranes were extensively characterized for their surface morphology, thermal stability, water content, and surface-charge properties using SEM, TEM, FTIR, TGA, water uptake, and ion-exchange capacity measurements. Counterion transport numbers across these membranes were estimated from membrane potential data. Membrane conductance measurements were also performed and these data were used for the estimation of values of counterion diffusion coefficients in the membrane phase. Physicochemical and electrochemical properties of these membranes and equivalent pore radius (estimated from electroosmotic flux measurements) were found to be highly dependent on the 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) content in the membrane phase. It was also observed that for better selectivity and membrane conductivity of anion-exchange membranes complete optimization of the loading of 4-VP in the membrane phase is necessary. Furthermore, among these, membrane with 25% loading with 4-VP exhibited very good selectivity, water content, and ion-exchange capacity along with moderate membrane conductivity, which may be used for their application in electro-driven separation at elevated temperatures or for other electrochemical processes.

In this study the poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) hydrogel elastomer was prepared by freezing-thawing method. The influences of percentage of poly (vinyl alcohol) in hydrogel, pH of solution and swelling temperature upon the swelling characteristic of PVA-hydrogel prosthetic nucleus material were studied. Its micropores were observed using SEM, and the swelling dynamics was further discussed. The experimental results showed that the poly (vinyl alcohol) hydrogel was a kind of network with a lot of micropores, the pore size was related with the PVA content. The maximum swelling ratio decreases when the percentage of PVA in hydrogel, the pH of solution and the swelling temperature were enhanced. The swelling process was described by the equation of swelling dynamics equation. The swelling rate was greatly influenced by the PVA content, the pH of solution and the dimension of hydrogel sample.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and egg albumin are water-soluble, biocompatible and biodegradable polymers and have been widely employed in biomedical fields. In this paper, novel physically cross-linked hydrogels composed of poly (vinyl alcohol) and egg albumin were prepared by cyclic freezing/thawing processes of aqueous solutions containing PVA and egg albumin. The FTIR analysis of prepared cryogels indicated that egg albumin was successfully introduced into the formed hydrogel possibly via hydrogen bonds among hydroxyl groups, amide groups and amino groups present in PVA and egg albumin. The gels were also characterized thermally and morphologically by DSC and SEM-techniques, respectively. The prepared so called 'cryogels' were evaluated for their water uptake potential and influence of various factors such as chemical architecture of the spongy hydrogels, pH and temperature of the swelling bath were investigated on the degree of water sorption by the cryogels. The effect of salt solution and various simulated biological fluids on the swelling of cryogel was also studied. The in vitro biocompatibility of the prepared cryogel was also judged by methods such as protein (BSA) adsorption, blood clot formation and percentage hemolysis measurements.

Polyurethane (PU) based hydrophobic and hydrophilic disks were prepared by graft copolymerization of PU with vinyl monomers, acryl amid (AAm), itaconic acid (IA), acrylic acid (AA) and crotonic acid (CA). Grafting reactions were performed in PU-dioxane solution using benzoyl peroxide as initiator. Air-water and cyclohexan-water contact angle values of the disks (thetaair and thetacy) were measured via "Captive Bubble Method". Surface free energy values of the disks were determined by using thetaair and thetacy via "Two Liquid Method" and those were compared with the swelling percentage values of the disks. The release of Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) from protein added hydrophilic and hydrophobic PU disks were defined by spectrophotometric measurements at lambda=278 nm in phosphate buffer saline (PBS). BSA releasing is completed around 48 h for all disks. The disks were also characterized by FTIR spectra and SEM micrographs. In vitro attachment of Candida albicans (C. albicans) and Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) on PU based hydrophilic and hydrophobic disks was studied at 37 degrees C. While C. albicans attached on to all disks, L. plantarum only selectively attached. The attachment percentage values of C. albicans (25%) and L. plantarum (20%) on hydrophobic PU disk were higher than hydrophilic PU disks. The antimicrobial activity of disks was also tested against C. albicans and L. plantarum. IA and AAm grafted PU disks showed inhibitory effect for the both test bacteria.
