Fabrication of liquid crystalline (LC) nanomaterials in an aligned pattern along the multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) has been reported here. The nanocomposite was prepared by sonicating esterified CNTs and the ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) in
chloroform
. The nanohybrid shish kebab (NHSK) like pattern was observed in
SEM
analysis. The nanocomposite materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), polarizing optical microscopy and electron microscopy. The DC and AC electrical properties of the composite materials were investigated. The DC conductivity of the nanocomposite increased by 2 order from the FLC materials and AC relaxation has been observed, in the nanocomposite, which was totally absent in the FLC materials.

Nanocomposite materials of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and organoclay were fabricated, in order to be utilized as dielectric materials of the organic thin film transistor (OTFT). Spin coating condition of the nanocomposite solution was examined considering shear viscosity of the composite materials dissolved in
chloroform
. Intercalated structure of the PVAc/clay nanocomposites was characterized using both wide-angle X-ray diffraction and TEM. Fracture morphology of the composite film on silicon wafer was also observed by
SEM
. Dielectric constant (4.15) of the nanocomposite materials shows that the PVAc/clay nanocomposites are applicable for the gate dielectric materials.

Fine structure and lipid distribution are studied in cuticles of five tardigrade species using TEM and
SEM
. Double osmication using partitioning methods reveals a substantial lipid component in the intracuticle and in irregular granular regions within the procuticle. These results are substantiated by the loss of osmiophily following lipid extraction with
chloroform
and methanol. Other lipid components are revealed by osmication following unmasking of lipo-protein complexes with thymol. These occur in the outer epicuticle and in the trilaminar layer lying between the epi- and intracuticles. Anhydrous fixation of dehydrated tardigrades (tuns) reveals dense, superficial masses of osmiophilic material, apparently concentrated lumps of the surface mucopolysaccharide ('flocculent coat'). However, cryo-SEMs of tuns reveal similar dense aggregations which apparently exude from pores (not visible) and are removed by
chloroform
. These results suggest extruded lipids since the flocculent coat is unaffected by
chloroform
; likely functions of such lipids are discussed.

Bimetallic iron-aluminum (Fe/Al) particles were synthesized and tested for their reactivity toward carbon tetrachloride using batch reactors and a flow-through column at near neutral pH. Preparation of bimetallic Fe/Al particles was conducted under acidic conditions under which iron was readily deposited onto the aluminum surface. The
SEM
image showed clusters of iron on the aluminum surface at the measured Fe:Al molar ratio of about 2:3. Results showed that the presence of zero-valent aluminum successfully prevented the formation of a passive layer at the iron surface and maintained the reactivity of iron. The dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride by bimetallic Fe/Al particles produced
chloroform
(9%), dichloromethane (17%) and methane (38%). Kinetic analysis suggests that bimetallic Fe/Al particles increased the reactivity toward carbon tetrachloride degradation by a factor of 10 compared to zero-valent iron and possessed a comparable reactivity with nano-sized Fe. The effectiveness of bimetallic Fe/Al particles was further confirmed by the continuous flow column study from which an ageing of bimetallic particles was also observed.

One achiral molecule of thioxanthone-anthracene (TX-A) is able to self-assemble into chiral nanowires by tuning the solvent with different polarity. Left- and right-handed nanowires with helix structure can be produced from
chloroform
and acetic ester solution of TX-A respectively. The
SEM
and TEM images confirm the formation of the helical nanowires. The results indicate that the solvent polarity has great influence in controlling of the self-assembly of organic molecules. The growth process demonstrates a promising pathway to investigate the self-assembling from achiral organic molecules to chiral aggregations.

Palladium/polymeric pyrrole film/foam-nickel (Pd/PPy/foam-Ni) composite electrode were prepared by the electrodeposition method with the electrodepositing current density of 5 mA x cm(-2) and the electrodepositing time of 40 min. Electrochemical reductive dechlorination of
chloroform
in acidic system was investigated using the Pd/PPy/foam-Ni electrode at ambient temperature. The electrochemical deposition behaviors of Pd/PPy/foam-Ni electrode were studied by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV). Cyclic voltammetry results reveal that the large hydrogen adsorption peak current of -100 mA on Pd/PPy/foam-Ni electrode was obtained at about -500 mV (vs Hg/Hg2 SO4).
SEM
micrographs show that the addition of polymeric pyrrole changed the distributing configuration of Pd microparticles on the electrode and Pd/PPy/foam-Ni electrode possessed a good spatial extension.
Chloroform
dechlorination experimentes were conducted in acid system. Dechlorination experimental results indicate that, with the integrated analysis of removal efficiency and current efficiency, with the high current efficiency of 44.17%, the removal efficiency of
chloroform
on Pd/PPy/foam-Ni electrode was 49.23%, under the optimum conditions of the dechlorination current density of 0.05 mA x cm(-2) and the dechlorination time of 180 min. In acid aqueous solution, with low initial concentration of
chloroform
, the results of dechlorination experiment were preferable.

Morphology variation: The Boc-alanine linked OPV exhibits an unprecedented formation of periodic macroporous honeycomb structures in
chloroform
and aligned fiber bundles in toluene (see
SEM
images). This represents a unique example for a distinct morphology change of an organogelator from macroporous honeycomb to aligned fiber bundles upon changing the solvent.

A novel biocomposite of carbon fiber (CF) reinforced hydroxyapatite (HA)/polylactide (PLA) was prepared by hot pressing a prepreg which consisting of PLA, HA and CF. The prepreg was manufactured by solvent impregnation process. Polymer resin PLA dissolved with
chloroform
was mixed with HA. After reinforcement CF bundle was impregnated in the mixture, the solvent was dried completely and subsequently hot-pressed uniaxially under a pressure of 40 MPa at 170 degrees C for 20 min. A study was carried out to investigate change in mechanical properties of CF/HA/PLA composites before and after degradation in vitro. The composites have excellent mechanical properties. A peak showed in flexural strength, flexural modulus and shear strength aspects, reaching up 430 MPa, 22 GPa, 212 MPa, respectively, as the HA content increased. Degraded in vitro for 3 months, the flexural strength and flexural modulus of the CF/HA/PLA fell 13.2% and 5.4%, respectively, while the shear strength of the CF/HA/PLA composites remains at the 190 MPa level. The
SEM
photos showed that there were gaps between the PLA matrix and CF after degradation. Water uptake increased to 5%, but the mass loss rate was only 1.6%. The pH values of the PBS dropped less than 0.1. That's because the alkaline of HA neutralize the acid degrades from PLA, which can prevent the body from the acidity harm.

In this paper we report the synthesis and self-assembling behavior of new porphyrin-azulene-porphyrin and porphyrin-azulene conjugates. The porphyrin-azulene-porphyrin conjugate gelates a number of organic solvents, while the porphyrin-azulene conjugates form vesicles in a
chloroform
-methanol binary mixture. The structures of the organogels and vesicles have been characterized by
SEM
and AFM. Two porphyrin-naphthalene-porphyrin and porphyrin-naphthalene conjugates were also prepared. A comparison of their properties with those of the azulene analogues reveals that the intermolecular dipole-dipole interaction of the azulene units plays an important role in promoting the self-assembly of the porphyrin-azulene-porphyrin and porphyrin-azulene conjugates.

C3-symmetrical tris-urea low molecular weight gelator 1 was synthesized in three steps from phloroglucin. The gelation ability of 1 in four chloroalkanes, i.e., CH2Cl2,
CHCl3
, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, was investigated under various conditions. Thermal treatment was effective in gelating 1,1,2-trichloroethane. In the presence of equimolar 1 and CuBr2, 1,1,2-trichloroethane and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane formed gels. Mixtures of 1 and
CHCl3
or 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane gave gels after ultrasound irradiation. CH2Cl2 changed into a gel in the presence of equimolar 1 and BiCl3 after sonication. Spherical particles with rough surfaces were found by
SEM
observation of
CHCl3
gel prepared from ultrasound irradiation of 1 and Y(NO3)3.
