A bioactive glass belonging to the system SiO(2)-CaO-Na(2)O was doped with silver ions by ion exchange in molten salts as well as in aqueous solution. It is demonstrated that these surface silver-doped glasses maintain, or even improve, the bioactivity of the starting glass. The measured quantity of released silver into simulated body fluid compares those reported in literature for the antibacterial activity and the non-cytotoxic effect of silver. Cytotoxicity tests were carried out to understand the effect of the doped surfaces on osteogenic cell adhesion and proliferation.

The results of trace element content analysed in Sphagnum capillifolium and Pseudevernia furfuracea exposed in bags in 1999 are reconsidered to evaluate the reliability of moss and lichen transplants to detect urban trace element atmospheric pollution, using Naples as a case example. After 4 months' exposure, trace element concentrations were at least twice as high as the pre-exposure values and in general higher in Sphagnum than in Pseudevernia. Moss samples were enriched in the following order: As=Cu>Mo>Pb>V>Co>Cr>Zn; lichen samples in the order: Mo>Cu>As=Co=Ni>V>Pb. The purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of mixing FeSO4 and Fe2(SO4)(3) solutions with municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) ash at room temperature to prevent heavy metals in treated ash from being dissolved. After conducting toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) tests nine times, the accumulation of extracted lead from treated scrubber ash was lower than regulated limits by the sixth test. Granular activated carbon-based, iron-containing adsorbents (As-GAC) were developed for effective removal of arsenic from drinking water. Granular activated carbon (GAC) was used primarily as a supporting medium for ferric iron that was impregnated by ferrous chloride (FeCl2) treatment, followed by chemical oxidation. Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) was the most effective oxidant, and carbons produced from steam activation of lignite were most suitable for iron impregnation and arsenic removal. Two As-GAC materials prepared by FeCl2 treatment (0.025 -0.40 M) of Dacro 20 x 50 and Dacro 20 x 40LI resulted in a maximum impregnated iron of 7.89% for Dacro 20 x 50 and 7.65% for Dacro 20 x 40Ll. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption analyses showed the BET specific surface area, total pore volume, porosity, and average mesoporous diameter all decreased with iron impregnation, indicating that some micropores were blocked.

indicated that the distribution of iron in the adsorbents was mainly on the edge of As-GAC in the low iron content (approximately 1% Fe) sample but extended to the center at the higher iron content (approximately 6% Fe). When the iron content was > approximately 7%, an iron ring formed at the edge of the GAC particles. No difference in X-ray diffraction patterns was observed between untreated GAC and the one with 4.12% iron, suggesting that the impregnated iron was predominantly in amorphous form. As-GAC could remove arsenic most efficiently when the iron content was approximately 6%; further increases of iron decreased arsenic adsorption. The removal of arsenate occurred in a wide range of pH as examined from 4.4 to 11, but efficiency was decreased when pH was higher than 9.0. The presence of phosphate and silicate could significantly decrease arsenate removal at pH > 8.5, while the effects of sulfate, chloride, and fluoride were minimal. Column studies showed that both As(V) and As(III) could be removed to below 10 microg/L within 6000 empty bed volume when the groundwater containing approximately 50 microg/L of arsenic was treated.

The catalytic activity of samples taken from an oxidation catalyst mounted on diesel-driven automobiles and aged under road conditions was recovered to a significant extent by washing with a dilute solution of citric acid. The characterization of samples arising from a fresh, a vehicle-aged, and a regenerated catalyst was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (

), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Relatively high levels of S and P, in the form of aluminum sulfate and phosphate, respectively, together with contaminant Si were detected in the used catalyst. Washing of the vehicle-aged catalytic oxidation converter revealed high efficiency in the extraction of the main contaminants detected (S and P) by this nondestructive methodology. The results of the experiments reported here should encourage the development of a technology based on this reactivation procedure for the rejuvenation of the catalytic device mounted on diesel exhaust pipes.

In this study, modifications of glass ionomer cements (GICs) were made by adding bioactive glass (BAG) to GIC to obtain bioactive restorative materials. This study used

and visual analysis to examine the bioactivity and the ability of the study materials to mineralize dentin. Conventional cure and resin-modified light-curing GIC were used. The materials consisted of powder and liquid. Three experimental materials were made by mixing 10-30 wt% of BAG powder with GIC powders. Commercially available GIC without BAG were used as controls. Class III restorations were made in altogether 62 intact beagle dog teeth, and the operation was performed under general anesthesia. The restorations were followed clinically for 1, 3 or 6 weeks. Resin-modified GIC containing BAG showed uniform CaP surface formation on the restorations. Mineral depositions in the close vicinity of the restoration-dentin interface and in deeper parts of dentin tubules were also noticed in resin-modified GIC containing BAG particles. It can be concluded that resin-modified GIC containing BAG have good potential in clinical applications where enhanced mineralization is expected.

In this study, a degradable, hierarchically porous silica/apatite composite material is developed from a simple low-temperature synthesis. Mesoporosity is induced in the silica portion by the use of supramolecular templating. The template is further removed by calcination. Firstly, hydroxyapatite is synthesized through a sol-gel method at near room temperature conditions. A depleted-uranium penetrator, shot in 1999 at Djakovica, Western Kosovo, and there collected in June 2001, shows evident alteration processes, perceivable as black and yellow coatings. XRD indicates that the black coating mostly consists of uraninite, UO2, with possible presence of other more oxidized uranium forms, such as U3O8. The yellow material is mostly amorphous, with variable weak diffraction lines, due to minor embedded uraninite grains, or possibly to schoepite, UO3 x 2H2O.

reveals only uranium. Whereas uraninite does not show any crystal shape, the yellow material recrystallizes to flattened pseudo-hexagonal prisms, approximately 2-10 microm wide and 1-4 microm long. Raman spectra of the yellow material have peaks at 3474 and 3222 cm(-1), indicative for OH groups, plus at 812 and 744 cm(-1), indicative for UO2(2+) uranyl ions. Based on the different data, the yellow material covering the depleted-uranium dart is an oxidized corrosion product, containing uranyl ions and hydroxyls and/or water molecules, akin to schoepite. Therefore, the Djakovica dart shows evident oxidation and leaching processes, progressively releasing mobile uranium forms. As uranium will be progressively dispersed far from the impact sites, at a rate controlled by the presence of effective fixing mechanisms, we feel necessary to maintain long term geochemical control of water pollution within the battlefield surroundings.
