Hurst analysis of EKG data obtained from a population of alcoholic (n = 13) and nonalcoholic (n = 48) subjects was undertaken. Potential subjects (n = 120) were screened using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III instruments. Data from subjects with a diagnosis of current alcohol dependence were analyzed. Subjects with diagnoses such as major depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia (Axis I diagnoses), or personality disorders (Axis II diagnoses) were excluded from analysis. Subjects undergoing testing were free of alcohol and illicit drugs. Alcoholic subjects had no clinical evidence of alcohol withdrawal symptoms at the time of testing. EKG data were obtained with eyes open or with eyes closed. Approximately 3.5 min of data were obtained for each condition. Alcoholic subjects had less complex heart rate dynamics as evidenced by higher values of H = 0.18 +/- 0.05 (mean +/- SEM), compared with healthy comparison subjects with H = 0.09 +/- 0.02, p < 0.014 for the eyes closed condition, and H = 0.17 +/- 0.05 (mean +/- SEM) compared with healthy comparison subjects with H = 0.07 +/- 0.02,p < 0.011 for the eyes open condition. A gender effect was seen, with female subjects showing evidence of more complex heart rate dynamics than male subjects.

Alcohol dependence has been correlated with decreases in heart rate variability. However, the time course of recovery of heart rate variability after cessation of alcohol consumption is unknown. We used electrocardiogram (ECG) data serially obtained from a population of detoxifying alcoholic subjects to determine the Hurst exponent of the ECG interbeat interval time series. Higher values of the Hurst exponent are associated with decreased heart rate variability when H< or =0.5. We tested a series of response-surface models relating the Hurst exponent (H) thus obtained to the following independent variables: the time interval T (days since last use of alcohol), A (age in years at time of admission), and gender. The best-fit model was: H(T)=(KA+H(m)T+H(f)T)/(1+T), F=5.2, P(F)</=0.01. Model parameters were: K=0.008+/-0.002 (mean+/-SEM); asymptotic H-values for males and females: H(m)=0.24+/-0.02 and H(f)=0.16+/-0.03, respectively, significantly different at P< or =0.05. Age was the strongest predictor of initial H-values in this alcoholic population sample.

Diesel soot aggregates emitted from a model dynamometer and 11 on-road vehicles were segregated by a micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI). The elemental contents and morphological parameters of the aggregates were then examined by scanning electron microscopy coupled with an energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), and combined with a fractional Brownian motion (fBm) processor. Two mode-size distributions of aggregates collected from diesel vehicles were confirmed. Mean mass concentration of 339 mg/m3 (dC/dlogdp) existed in the dominant mode (180-320 nm). A relatively high proportion of these aggregates appeared in PM1, accentuating the relevance regarding adverse health effects. Furthermore, the fBm processor directly parameterized the SEM images of fractal like aggregates and successfully quantified surface texture to extract Hurst coefficients (H) of the aggregates. For aggregates from vehicles equipped with a universal cylinder number, the H value was independent of engine operational conditions. A small H value existed in emitted aggregates from vehicles with a large number of cylinders. This study found that aggregate fractal dimension related to H was in the range of 1.641-1.775, which is in agreement with values reported by previous TEM-based experiments. According to EDS analysis, carbon content ranged in a high level of 30%-50% by weight for diesel soot aggregates. The presence of Na and Mg elements in these sampled aggregates indicated the likelihood that some engine enhancers composed of biofuel or surfactants were commonly used in on-road vehicles in Taiwan. In particular, the morphological H combined with carbon content detection can be useful for characterizing chain-like or cluster diesel soot aggregates in the atmosphere.
