We describe an unusual case of pelviureteric junction obstruction in a child due to a benign ureteric polyp.
Benign neoplasms
of the
ureter
are uncommon in adults and extremely rare in children.

Fibroepithelial polyps of the
ureter
, a mesodermal
benign tumor
, are rare. The first case of a fibroepithelial ureteral polyp associated with bilateral complete ureteral duplication and another case associated with bilateral hydronephrosis are reported. The first case suggested a malformative congenital etiology. The two fibroepithelial polyps were treated by conservative surgery.

A case of inverted papilloma of the
ureter
in a 62-year-old man is presented along with a literature review of 14 cases. This rare
benign tumor
should enter the differential diagnosis of a ureteral filling defect especially when it has a smooth configuration. Preoperative consideration of this diagnosis may lead to intraoperative confirmation of pathology and conservative resection.

60 patients with primary retroperitoneal tumor were reported. Among them, 26 cases were benign and 34 malignant. Abdominal mass was the most frequent presenting symptom (58.3%). The next was abdominal pain. The clinical course varied from 1 day to 22 years. Malignancy was predominant in patients with history less than one year. The size of tumor varied from 3 X 3 X 3 cm to 34 X 24 X 11 cm. Malignancy was more frequent in tumors larger than 10 cm in diameter. The location is decided mainly by displacement and compression of the gastrointestinal tract in barium meal examination and displacement or compression of the kidney or
ureter
and the presence of hydronephrosis in intravenous pyelography. The final diagnosis can only be established by pathological examination on celiotomy. All 60 patients were operated and the lesion of 43 was resectable. In the 20 with malignant tumor resected, only 8 patients are alive, while all the 26 patients with
benign tumor
are surviving, though 3 of them had unremovable lesions. The treatment is to resect the tumor as thorough as possible, including the adjacent invaded organs. Recurrence is likely for which resection should be reconsidered if possible. Radiotherapy or chemotherapy should be given to patients with lymphosarcoma, unremovable tumors and residual lesions after resection.

The urological treatment and analysis of 23 patients with urological disorders after gynecological operation during the past three years were studied. Primary trauma of
ureter
, bladder and other urological organs that was caused by gynecological operation occurred in 6 cases (26%) consisting of 3 malignant tumor cases, and 3
benign tumor
cases. Injured organs were 4 cases of
ureter
and 2 cases of bladder. Reconstruction of
ureter
and ureterovesical implantation were performed to all those patients except one who suffered from schizophrenia, and these operations brought favorable results. Secondary trauma that caused urological disorder after gynecological operation was found in 17 cases (74%), all of which were induced by radical operation against malignant tumors. The symptoms were uremia, abdominal pain, vesicovaginal fistula, severe bladder bleeding with poor general condition. In most cases, uretero-cutaneostomy was performed as emergency measures, and recontruction of
ureter
was possible in 3 cases. It is presumed that urological operation for secondary damage is favorable, since only one patient died of uremia.

Four cases of inverted papilloma in the upper urinary tract are reported-three were located in the
ureter
and one in the renal pelvis. Clinical and pathological findings are described. In two cases the patients had a history of transitional cell carcinoma; while in one case, inverted papilloma was found in the same lesion as transitional cell carcinoma. The question of malignant transformation of inverted papilloma is discussed. It is concluded that inverted papilloma is a
benign tumor
with a very low frequency of recurrence, but regular follow-up is advised.

We report a case of fibroepithelial polyps of the
ureter
, which are rare, benign mesodermal tumors. The advantage of ureteroscopic confirmation of this
benign tumor
is emphasized.

We report a case of left ureteral intussusception associated with a ureteral polyp. At operation a 7 cm. long polyp was seen originating from the tip of the inside of the proximal
ureter
, causing 1.7 cm. of antegrade invagination. The polyp was resected and the invaginated region was repaired since pathological examination revealed a
benign tumor
. At followup an excretory urogram demonstrated prompt improvement of left hydronephrosis.

Fibroepithelial polyp of the
ureter
, a mesodermal
benign tumor
, is extremely rare. Four cases of our own prompted us to review the world literature on this subject (108 documented cases since 1950). The mode of presentation, etiology, clinical features, and treatment modalities of this lesion are discussed.

Fibroepithelial polyps are the most common
benign tumor
of the
ureter
. Most of the literature regarding their cause ascribes it to chronic infection. These publications, however, show that the majority of such cases never were associated with a documented urinary tract infection. Fibroepithelial polyps appear with equal frequency in male and female subjects and are found in all age groups including children, in contrast to what would have been expected with an infectious cause. Four histologically confirmed cases of fibroepithelial polyps were associated with chronic inflammation of the upper urinary tract related to the presence of calculi and/or Double J ureteral stents. All patients were managed successfully by endoscopic means, preserving renal function. Fibroepithelial ureteral polyps may be associated with urolithiasis, which serves as a source of chronic inflammation. A review of the literature is presented and supports these observations.
