An antiserum against human epidermal keratins was used to detect keratins in frozen sections of various rabbit and human tissues by indirect immunofluorescence. Strong staining was observed in all stratified squamous epithelia (epidermis, cornea, conjunctiva, tongue, esophagus, vagina, and anus), in epidermal appendages (hair follicle, sebaceous gland, ductal and myoepithelial cells of sweat glands), as well as in Hassall's corpuscles of the thymus, indicating that all contain abundant keratins. No staining by the antiserum was observed in fibroblasts, muscle of any type, cartilage, blood vessel, nerve tissue, iris or lens epithelium, or the glomerular or tubular cells of the kidney. In contrast, the antiserum stained the cells of most epithelia of the intestinal tract, urinary tract (
urethra
, bladder,
ureter
, collecting ducts of kidney), female genital tract (cervix, cervical glands, uterus, and oviduct), and respiratory tract (trachea and bronchi). Epithelial cells of the fine ductal system in the pancreas and submaxillary gland also stained well. When primary cultures of epithelial cells derived from bladder, intestine, kidney, and trachea were grown on glass coverslips and stained with anti-keratin, fiber networks similar to those of cultured keratinocytes were observed. These results show that keratins constitute a cytoskeleton in epithelial cells of diverse morphology and embryological origin. The stability of keratin filaments probably confers the structural strength necessary for cells covering a free surface. Keratin staining can be used to obtain information about the origin of cell lines.

The authors have collected in 13 years, 15 cases of congenital aplasia of the abdominal wall. All of the patients had involvement of the urinary apparatus of varying degree of severity, megalo-
ureter
, megabladder and dilatation of the posterior
urethra
being the most constant lesions. Twelve patients with renal failure, benefited from reparatory surgery of the excretory pathway. Eleven patients had complete or incomplete retention: in 5 cases there was a urethral valve. In 6 cases the megalo-
urethra
was apparently idiopathic. In all of these cases, endoscopic treatment was carried out, constituted either of resection of valves, or internal urethro-sphincterotomy using a cutting electrode: 9 times, the result obtained was excellent. One patient was improved; in one case the result could not be assessed. For the authors, obstructive urethral pathology is a frequently unrecognized or badly understood fact. It is accessible to endoscopic treatment, which must precede or accompany correction of the ureteral abnormalities.

Using specific radioligand receptor binding assays, we have, for the first time, quantitated both alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors in the musculature of the lower
ureter
, bladder body, posterior bladder base, and proximal
urethra
of the dog, and in the bladder base and body of the rabbit. For the beta receptor assay 3H-dihydroalprenolol was used as the ligand, and, for the alpha receptor assay, 3H-dihydroergocryptine was used. In the dog, there was a significantly greater density of beta receptors in the bladder body than in either the
ureter
or the posterior bladder base. The
urethra
had an intermediate density. The bladder base and the proximal
urethra
had a significantly greater density of alpha receptors than either the
ureter
or the bladder dome. The dissociation constant of beta receptors for DHA was approximately 9 nM for all tissues studied, and that of alpha receptors for DHE approximately 7 nM. A similar distribution of alpha-and beta adrenergic receptors was seen in the rabbit bladder.

The uroradiological changes and complications with 110 patients who did undergo a total of 119 renal transplantations are discussed under the following 4 topographical headings: perirenal and intrarenal,
ureter
including the anastomosis, bladder,
urethra
. In our material we found a lymphocele in 1 patient, papillary necrosis in 3, ureteral obstruction in 6, urinary leakage in 23, reflux in a total of 23, renal calculi in 1 and bladder concrements in 1.

Lesions of Cowper's duct and gland are more common than previously reported. They may be asymptomatic or may cause micturition difficulties or urinary retention. They may be congenital or acquired (usually inflammatory). Radiographic findings are either a rounded filling defect arising from the floor of the bulbous
urethra
or reflux into a dilated duct which parallels the bulbomembranous
urethra
. Panendoscopic fulguration is a simple and effective method of treatment for symptomatic patients with retention cysts. Asymptomatic patients do not need any therapy. A dilated duct should not be confused with partial urethral duplication, a urethral diverticulum, or an ectopic
ureter
since such an error may lead to an unnecessary operation.

A short review is given of the effects of prostaglandins on the smooth muscle of the bladder,
urethra
and
ureter
. In several animal species and in man, prostaglandins of the E and F types contract the detrusor. The contractions develop slowly and are not affected by tetrodotoxin, phenoxybenzamine, or atropine, suggesting a direct effect on the smooth muscle cell. However, evidence is also available suggesting a role of the prostaglandins as modulators of transmitter release in the bladder. In animals as well as in man, urethral smooth muscle is contracted by prostaglandin F2alpha, but relaxed by prostaglandins E1 and E2. The smooth muscle of the
ureter
seems to react similarly, but published results vary. The detailed mode of action, and the role of prostaglandins in the control of activity in urinary tract smooth muscle remain to be established.

The bladder belonging to eleven mammalian species were investigated, and as a result the following observations were made: (1) a submucous
ureter
was found in the case of most of the species examined; (2) histological investigation revealed three types of intramural ureters, and (3) downward extension of ureteric musculature, separate from bladder musculature, to the seminal colliculus in the male, or to the lower end of the
urethra
in the female, was found. A suggestion is presented to explain the manner by which the ureteric openings change their relations to those of the mesonephric ducts development. It seems that 'after absorption of the common segment of the Wolffian duct, breaking down of the ventral wall of
ureter
' is the most likely process.

An ectopic single
ureter
in the male subject is a rare anomaly, which commonly drains a dysplastic kidney to the prostatic
urethra
or the seminal vesicle. The further the ureteral orifice is located from the trigone of the bladder, the more severe is the ipsilateral renal dysplasia. A case is described in which an ectopic
ureter
and ectopic and dysplastic kidney were found at the time of inguinal herniorrhaphy. The
ureter
was connected to the epididymis of the testicle. This is the most severe form of ureteral ectopia and it has not been reported previously.

Two cases of carcinoma in situ of the bladder treated with radical cystoprostatourethrectomy were evaluted by histologic study of the totally embedded epithelium. Clinical symptomatology consisted of urinary frequency with diminished bladder capacity and pain on voiding. Urinary cytology and multiple biopsies were essential for diagnosis of this lesion. The resected specimens of both cases were fixed in formalin and totally embedded for step sections that were mapped after histopathologic study. In both cases atypical epithelium and carcinoma in situ with foci of microinvasion affected the bladder mucosa and extended continuously to the distal ureters as well as the prostatic
urethra
. Since the lesion subsequently may result in invasive bladder cancer and often involves the prostatic
urethra
and distal
ureter
as in our cases the radical cystoprostatourethrectomy is recommended.

The authors report a 38 years old patient in whom an intravenous pyelogram was performed for moderate arterial hypertension. This showed a large filling defect in the right lower part of the bladder without renal function on that side. Endoscopic separation of the jet coming from the right half of the trigone showed a liquid containing numerous spermatozoa. A cystogram opacified by reflux a cavity in the genital system via this, the right
ureter
. With the diagnosis of ectopic
ureter
ending in the genital system, a nephro-ureterectomy demonstrated the attachment of the
ureter
into a pouch which communicated with the bladder and the seminal vesicle. A view of the normal embryology insists on the fact that contrary to the classic view, the pronephros disappears entirely and that the metanephros is at the origin of the Woffian canal which opens on the posterior wall of the urogenital sinus at the 28th day when the
ureter
springs from a ureteral bud. Since 1960 this would be the 34th case in the literature, seminal ectopia (24%) coming after ectopia in the prostatic
urethra
(54%). Epididymitis is a frequent presenting symptom (44%). The workup shows: absence of renal function (100%), raising of the ipsilateral trigone by a cystic swelling (76%), absence of the meatus on that side on endoscopy, presence of an ipsilateral mass above the prostate on rectal examination (30%). The diagnosis is confirmed by vasography where the
ureter
is opacified by the seminal vesicle or by systography after endoscopic incision of the mass. Excision of the seminal vesicle was done in conjunction with total nephroureterectomy in 17% of cases.
