A patient who presented with hypertension of recent onset was found to have unilateral
hydronephrosis
. Increased activity of the renin-angiotensin system was documented with renal-vein-renin concentrations. The
hydronephrosis
was due to a primary transitional cell carcinoma of the
ureter
. Following nephroureterectomy, blood pressure returned to normal and has remained so for two years.

Six cases of avulsion of the upper
ureter
by blunt trauma are presented: 5 in children and one in an adult. One of these also involved the entire renal pedicle. A review of the literature shows that this type of trauma is rare, about 30 cases having been reported. They are seen mostly in children, and the right kidney is more prone to injury. Often, there is absence of hematuria which leads to considerable delay in diagnosis and surgical repair. On account of this delay,
hydronephrosis
, infection, and sometimes pseudocyst formation can complicate the initial pathologic condition. Despite these delays, successful repair can be accomplished and the kidney salvaged. In some instances, as we found out in our cases, a retrograde pyelogram was helpful in establishing the diagnosis and localizing the site of the lesion preoperatively.

Turner syndrome is commonly associated with urinary tract anomalies. A second case is reported of its unusual association with retrocaval
ureter
and massive
hydronephrosis
.

The results of a combined study of 25 patients with idiopathic
hydronephrosis
are presented. Diuresis renography was performed pre-operatively and surgically removed specimens of the renal pelvis and
ureter
were examined by light and electron microscopy. There was good correlation between the results of these 2 methods of assessment which have defined 2 broad categories of patients with renal pelvic dilatation. These findings are discussed with particular reference to the clinical value of diuresis renography.

A proximally hypoplastic
ureter
causing
hydronephrosis
was replaced by a tightened ileal segment. The operation was performed in one stage and proved to be successful 10 years later.

Seven patients (4 females, and 3 males) born in unrelated families, one of them consanguineous (first cousins), were affected by peculiar facies and gestures while smiling and crying, and by
hydronephrosis
, hydroureter and intravesical stenosis of the
ureter
, abnormal caliber of the urether in the prostatic and membranous portions, urethral valves, abnormal bladder with trabeculation, and diverticula associated with severe hypertrophy of the mucosa with sclerotic changes. The genetic analysis of these families indicates that the condition is probably autosomal dominant, with variable expressivity and incomplete penetrance. The syndrome represents alteration of facial and urinary developmental fields. The peculiar facies allows early recognition of the condition, and this can be helpful for early assessment and treatment, leading perhaps to a better prognosis.

A man with crossed, non-fused renal ectopia had carcinoma of the distal
ureter
, leading to hydro-
ureter
,
hydronephrosis
and urinary infection. Crossed ectopic kidneys are more disease-prone than are normal kidneys. Complicating disorders are discussed, the value of thorough urologic investigation is stressed and the incidence of tumour of the upper urinary tract in crossed renal ectopia without fusion is reviewed.

The anatomo-operative characteristics of the ischemic stenosis of the juxtapyelic part of the
ureter
, its embryogenic fundamentals, clinical semiology and urography, emphasizing the signs of the latter for the differential diagnosis of
hydronephrosis
are presented. The most adequate surgical technique, that is the extirpation of the scleroatrophic part of the
ureter
, followed by uretero-pyelostomy, with special care in preserving the arteries of the
ureter
, is summarized and the technique for the postoperative drainage of the kidney is pointed out. The poor effectiveness of other procedures are commented.

Malacoplakia of the urinary tract affects primarily the bladder and secondarily the distal
ureter
. Characteristic gross and microscopic lesions have been well described. A case of malacoplakia is reported in a 55-year-old woman who presented with
hydronephrosis
in a solitary kidney. The only lesion in the urinary tract was an apple-core type mass of the distal
ureter
, which was resected. This represents a rare and unusual presentation of malacoplakia. The differential diagnosis and pertinent literature are discussed.

Through an artificially created ureteral obstruction in the dog, a ureteral stent was placed with the aid of a percutaneous nephrostomy tube. The stent was removed after two weeks. This resulted in permanent relief of the obstruction in the treated animals. In contrast to this, the control animals remained completely obstructed with resultant
hydronephrosis
and loss of kidney. It is proposed that this method can be used in humans where nephropyelostomy had been placed and where surgical correction of the obstructed
ureter
is not feasible.
