Bovine X hamster and bovine X mouse hybrid somatic cells have been used to investigate the syntenic relationship of nine loci in the bovine that have homologous loci on human chromosome 12. Eight loci, including A2M, GLI, HOX3, IFNG, INT1, KRAS2, NKNB, and
PAH
, were assigned to the previously identified bovine syntenic group U3 represented by GAPD. However, a single locus from the q-terminus of
HSA
12, ALDH2, mapped to a new, previously unidentified autosomal syntenic group. These results indicate the existence of a very large ancestral syntenic group spanning from the p-terminus to q24 of
HSA
12 and containing over 4% of the mammalian genome. Additionally, the results predict that ALDH2 is distal to
PAH
and IFNG on
HSA
12, the type II keratin gene complex will reside between q11 and q21 of
HSA
12, A2M will map to MMU 6, and LALBA and GLI will map to MMU 15.

Kidney function changes after single-dose administration of borocaptate sodium were studied in rats and in patients with brain tumors. Changes of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) measured as 14C-inulin clearance and urine flow rate (UFR) after a slow intravenous injection of
BSH
(25 and 50 mg/kg b.w., respectively) were investigated in rats under pentobarbital anesthesia. The effect of
BSH
has been compared with that of its disulfide (BSSB) which is spontaneously generated by oxidation of
BSH
during storage. It was found that
BSH
decreases GFR in relation to dose and, in the same way, causes a temporary increase of UFR. On the other hand, BSSB (50 mg/kg) induced a large reversible decrease of GFR as well as a decrease of urine excretion. Measurements of GFR (inulin clearance), renal plasma flow (
PAH
clearance) and urine excretion were taken in a group of patients with brain tumors in which boron disposition after an infusion of
BSH
(25 mg/kg b.w. over 1 h) had been studied. An increase in urine production was the dominant effect (up to 200% of the initial value), with the alterations of GFR and RPF being of minor significance except in one patient with a GFR reduction up to almost 50% the original value. Kidney function changes after
BSH
or BSSB administration are supposedly related to the high retention of
BSH
in kidney.

Regional assignment of eight markers to chromosome 2 of Ateles paniscus chamek (APC) confirmed a syntenic association similar to human (
HSA
) 12q + 14q + 15q. Three
HSA
12q markers (RAP1B,
PAH
and ALDH2) were allocated to a shortest region of overlap (SRO) in APC 2p and found to be syntenic to other
HSA
12q markers (PEPB and TCF1). Five
HSA
14q markers (CTLA, PAX9, NSP, FOS and CHGA) were allocated to APC 2q and found to be syntenic to other
HSA
14q markers (NP, TGM1, and CALM1) and to four
HSA
15q markers (THBS1, B2M, HEXA and MPI) but dissociated from markers close to
HSA
14qter (CKB) and
HSA
15qter (FES-IDH2). Karyotypic comparisons showed an evident homoeology between APC 2p and
HSA
12q while APC 2q was similar to an
HSA
14qter::
HSA
15qter fusion product. Comparative gene mapping data show that the
HSA
14q +
HSA
15q syntenic association is an ancestral mammalian gene cluster that has been maintained in several primate taxa. Conversely, in Ateles, it has been further associated with
HSA
12q while, in Hominoids and Cebus, it has been independently dissociated into two separate syntenic groups, similar to
HSA
14q and
HSA
15q.
