This paper communicates the history of a case of subretinal
cysticercosis
in the left eye of a 73-year-old female patient. The only subjective complaints were slightly
blurred vision
in the affected eye. Serological findings in the blood (Agar-Gel precipitation; IFAT; ELISA) and the aqueous humor were negative. However, according to the literature false-negative serological findings are not uncommon. A stool examination for worm eggs or tapeworm segments was also negative. The remaining lab findings, including hemogram and immunoelectrophoresis, were also normal. Neurocysticercosis was ruled out by clinical and roentgenologic (CCT) diagnosis. As the patient declined treatment with praziquantel, a modern treatment for tapeworm, photocoagulation of the cysticercus was performed at two sittings, first peripheral demarcation and subsequently central coagulation.

Two cases of
cysticercosis
of the racemosus type found in the fourth ventricle of the brain are presented. The symptoms were
blurred vision
or loss of consciousness and increased intracranial pressure. The condition recurred several times in one patient in whom repeated operations to remove the cysts were required.

We performed a survey for taeniasis and
cysticercosis
among persons living in a Mexican village where Taenia solium infection in pigs was known to be enzootic. A standardized questionnaire was administered in all 577 households to obtain medical histories and information on demographic and environmental factors and on risk factors associated with transmission of infection. Serum and/or stool specimens were obtained from 1005 volunteers and examined for
cysticercosis
antibodies and intestinal parasites. Faecal examination of 828 participants revealed infection by Taenia sp. in 2 (0.2%). Three additional cases of taeniasis were detected in individuals who evacuated proglottids after treatment with praziquantel. Of 1005 human serum specimens, 49 (4.9%) were positive in the
cysticercosis
immunoblot assay. Seropositivity increased with age and reached a peak in subjects aged 46-55 years (P < 0.05). A history of seizures was significantly associated with seropositivity (P < 0.05); approximately 25% of persons with such histories were seropositive. Histories of headache, dizziness, trembling,
blurred vision
, and vomiting were also significantly associated with positive immunoblot assays. This study has demonstrated previously undiagnosed morbidity associated with T. solium neurocysticercosis and identified community behavioural and environmental practices that must be modified to prevent continued transmission of
cysticercosis
and taeniasis.

Spinal intradural
cysticercosis
is a rare manifestation of neurocysticercosis. We report a unique patient who showed visual symptoms and normal imaging of the brain caused by isolated spinal neurocysticercosis. A 59-year-old male patient was admitted to the emergency unit with a history of severe headache and progressive
blurred vision
. Brain computed tomographic scanning and magnetic resonance imaging showed normal cerebral anatomy without hydrocephalus. The fundoscopic evaluation by an ophthalmologist showed bilateral papilledema. Perimetry studies revealed visual field defects in both eyes. With the diagnosis of pseudotumor cerebri, a lumbar tap was attempted; however, we could not drain the cerebrospinal fluid in spite of appropriate attempts. Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging revealed multilevel intraspinal lesions that were confirmed histologically to be neurocysticercosis. An intraoperative lumbar puncture revealed an increased opening pressure and cytochemical analysis showed elevated cerebrospinal fluid protein level. The headache resolved immediately after surgery. However, the visual symptoms remained and recovered only marginally despite antihelminthic medications after six months of operation.

A 16-year-old male presented with
blurred vision
in the right eye after recent travel to Nicaragua. Funduscopic examination revealed subretinal
cysticercosis
superior to the optic nerve. The cyst was drained and excised using a bimanual, three-dimensional, heads-up-assisted pars plana vitrectomy without complications. Technical maneuvers for cyst extraction along with clinicopathological correlation are described. Postoperatively, the patient exhibits no signs of recurrence and has excellent vision. Appropriate medical management can be an alternative in those patients with submacular
cysticercosis
in whom achieving good visual outcome with vitreoretinal surgery is not possible. We report the case of a 25-year-old female who presented complaining of
blurred vision
in her left eye associated with photopsias and metamorphopsias of 3 months duration. Initial visual acuity in the right eye was 20/20 and 20/100 in the left eye. Upon indirect ophthalmoscopy in the left eye, a yellow-white, dome-shaped, elevated lesion with foveal involvement was observed. The rest of the ophthalmological examination proved normal. With clinical findings and images, submacular
cysticercosis
was diagnosed, and vitreoretinal surgery was suggested. Nevertheless, the patient did not accept the treatment; therefore, medical management was initiated. Central nervous system involvement was ruled out, and treatment with praziquantel and systemic prednisolone was initiated.
Cysticercosis
was resolved with significant improvement of her symptoms and visual acuity.
