The specific surface area of synthetic goethite depends on the preparation: the Fe(III):OH ratio, the rate of base titration of Fe
salt
, and the temperature and time of crystallization. The crystals also have different morphologies as determined by SEM or
TEM
. Carbon coating is used to improve the quality of SEM images of nonconducting specimens. We show here that needle-like goethite particles become substantially thicker in the course of standard carbon coating, and the length-to-width ratio obtained for carbon-coated particles is lower than that for the original goethite particles. The morphology of the goethite particles was also studied by tapping mode AFM.

The effect of adding an alcohol ethoxylate nonionic surfactant (C(18)E(18)) to aqueous solutions of a cationic surfactant, erucyl bis(hydroxyethyl) methylammonium chloride (EHAC,CH(3)(CH(2))(7)(CH)(2)(CH(2))(12)N(+)-(CH(2)CH(2)OH)(2)CH(3)Cl(-)), was studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), steady-state rheology, and cryo-transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM). This cationic surfactant has the ability to self-assemble into giant wormlike micelles in the presence of an electrolyte, such as KCl. In
salt
-free solutions, the mixture of the two surfactants gave rise to spherical micelles. The scattering curves obtained were fitted with a polydisperse core-shell model combined with a Hayter Penfold potential. The inner and outer radii were found to be dependent on the surfactant ratio. In the presence of KCl, mixed wormlike micelles were formed. However, further addition of C(18)E(18) promoted the breaking of the micellar worms with the appearance of a structure peak in the scattering curves. In addition, it was found that the low shear viscosity is decreased upon addition of the alcohol ethoxylate nonionic surfactant. These findings are in good qualitative agreement with the Cryo-
TEM
images. The results show that the addition of the nonionic surfactant to the system is a method of controlling the worm length.

Photo-induced reduction of gold and platinum metal
salt
solutions was carried out using viologen graft copolymerized on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films and viologen-containing poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF-PVBV) microporous membranes. The effects of the UV irradiation time and concentration of the metal
salt
solutions on the metal ion reduction process and the resultant metal deposition on the polymeric substrates were investigated. The metal-polymer composites were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and
TEM
), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The amount of metal uptake, the state of the metal, and the size of the metal particles were found to be strongly dependent on the UV irradiation time and the type and concentration of the metal
salt
solution. The microporous structure and the high viologen content of the PVDF-PVBV membrane constitute an effective matrix for metal ion reduction and preparation of metal nanoparticles.

A variety of synthesis parameters for the preparation of gold nanoparticles by NaBH4 solution reduction in the W/O microemulsion media consisting of Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB)/n-hexanol/water system was investigated. The results showed that the molar ratio of water to surfactant (rw) had nothing to do with the gold particle size, but the concentration of the aqueous gold
salt
solution had a significant effect on the size of gold particle. Through optimizing the preparation parameters, Au/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared with two different methods, then the catalysts were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectra, XRD and
TEM
, and the effect of two different preparation methods on active component gold particle size in the catalysts was studied.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that over 80% of respirable particulate matter (PM10) in cities comes from road transport and that tire and brake wear are responsible for the 3-7% emission of it. Data on the indicators of environmental impact of tire debris (TD), originated from the tire abrasion on roads, are extremely scarce, even though TD contains chemicals (zinc and organic compounds) which can be released in the environment. METHODS: TD particle morphology was analysed with SEM,
TEM
and FIB instruments. TD eluates and TD organic extracts were tested at dilution series on human cell lines and Xenopus laevis embryos. 50 and 100 g/L TD were used for the eluates obtained after 24 h at pH 3 and the quantity of zinc present was measured with a ICP-AES. Eluates diluted to 1%, 10%, 50% in culture media and undiluted were used on X. laevis embryos in the FETAX test. HepG2 cells were exposed for 24 h to 0.05 - 50 mug/ml of zinc
salt
while A549 cells were exposed for 24, 48 and 72 h to 10, 50, 60, or 75 mug/ml of TD extract. X. laevis embryos were exposed to 50, 80, 100, or 120 mug/ml TD extract. RESULTS: The solution of undiluted 50 g/L TD produced 80.2% mortality (p < 0.01) in X. laevis embryos and this toxic effect was three times greater than that produced by 100 g/L TD. Zn accumulation in HepG2 cells was evident after 4 h exposure. A549 cells exposed to TD organic extract for 72 h presented a modified morphology, a decrease in cell proliferation and an increase in DNA damage as shown by comet assay. The dose 80 mug/ml of TD extract produced 14.6% mortality in X. laevis embryos and 15.9% mortality at 120 mug/ml. Treatment with 80, 100, or 120 mug/ml TD organic extract increased from 14.8% to 37.8% malformed larvae percentages compared to 5.6% in the control. CONCLUSION: Since the amount of Zn leached from TD is related to pH, aggregation of particles and elution process, the quantity of TD present in the environment has to be taken into account. Moreover the atmospheric conditions, which may deeply influence the particle properties, have to be considered. The TD organic fraction was toxic for cells and organisms. Thus, because of its chemical components, TD may have a potential environmental impact and has to be further investigated.

Ultralong and single-crystalline Cd(OH)(2) nanowires were fabricated by a hydrothermal method using alkali salts as mineralizers. The morphology and size of the final products strongly depend on the effects of the alkali salts (e.g., KCl, KNO(3), and K(2)SO(4) or NaCl, NaNO(3), and Na(2)SO(4)). When the
salt
is absent, only nanoparticles are observed in
TEM
images of the products. The 1D nanostructure growth method presented herein offers an excellent tool for the design of other advanced materials with anisotropic properties. In addition, the Cd(OH)(2) nanowires might act as a template or precursor that is potentially converted into 1D cadmium oxide through dehydration or into 1D nanostructures of other functional materials (e.g., CdS, CdSe).

The colloid stability of synthetic titania particles was studied as a function of KCl concentration at pH values of 6.3, 6.7, and 8.4, using static light scattering to obtain stability ratios. Standard DLVO theory was then used to calculate the stability ratios as a function of
salt
concentration. Reasonable agreement between theory and experiment could only be obtained if an effective interaction radius, corresponding to surface asperities on the titania particles, was used in the calculation. High-resolution
TEM
images suggest that the effective interaction radius corresponds to the size of surface crystallites formed during synthesis.

A kind of nano particle of butyl acrylate (BA)/styrene (ST)/acrylamide (AM) was prepared through a new method that was ultrasonic emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization, which was a kind of environmental protection and economical method. And no any volatile organic solvent (VOC), emulsifier and initiator were used in this method. Only water was used as solvent. The effects of sonic intensity, sonic time, inorganic
salt
content, N2 flow velocity, etc. on monomer conversion were studied.
TEM
photographs showed that its particles size was about 80 nm, which was less than particles size (about 140 nm) through conventional emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization method. The FTIR spectrum showed that after extracted by water for 48 h, CHCl3 for 48 h and THF for 48 hr, respectively, the sample obtained by this way was a ternary copolymer of BA, ST and AM, but not a blend of poly(butyl acrylate), polystyrene and polyacrylamide.

The clustering and stability of magnetic nanoparticles coated with random copolymers of acrylic acid, styrenesulfonic acid, and vinylsulfonic acid has been studied. Clusters larger than 50 nm are formed when the coatings are made using too low or too high molecular weight polymers or using insufficient amounts of polymer. Low-molecular-weight polymers result in thin coatings that do not sufficiently screen van der Waals attractive forces, while high-molecular-weight polymers bridge between particles, and insufficient polymer results in bare patches on the magnetite surface. The stability of the resulting clusters is poor, but when an insufficient polymer is used as primary coating, and a secondary polymer is added to coat remaining bare magnetite, the clusters are stable in high
salt
concentrations (>5 M NaCl), while retaining the necessary cluster size for efficient magnetic recovery. The magnetite cores were characterized by
TEM
and vibrating sample magnetometry, while the clusters were characterized by dynamic light scattering. The clustering and stability are interpreted in terms of the particle-particle interaction forces, and the optimal polymer size can be predicted well on the basis of these forces and the solution structure and hydrophobicity of the polymer. The size of aggregates formed by limited polymer can be predicted with a diffusion-limited colloidal aggregation model modified with a sticking probability based on fractional coating of the magnetite cores.

We investigate the conformation of long polyelectrolyte chains attached to colloidal latex particles by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). The dense grafting of the polyelectrolyte chains ("polyelectrolyte brush") leads to a confinement of the counterions and a concomitantly high osmotic pressure within the polyelectrolyte layer attached to the core particles. Cryo-
TEM
has provided first model-independent direct proof for the strong stretching of the polyelectrolyte chains by direct visualization. If
salt
is added, cryo-
TEM
clearly shows how chains collapse because of the strong screening of the electrostatic interaction. Moreover, the analysis of interacting particles by cryo-
TEM
shows that the polyelectrolyte chains retract at close contact. Hence, we demonstrate how cryo-
TEM
can be used to analyze directly the spatial structure of polyelectrolyte brushes in situ.
