An in situ vesicle-template-interface reaction route was introduced to prepare self-encapsulated CdS microspheres, which can be obtained by heating an ethanol solution after ultrasonic irradiation in the presence of Cd(NO3)2, CS2, and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The products were characterized by various techniques of XRD, TEM, UV-Vis spectrum, and PL spectrum.

We report herein on the oriented growth of ZnO crystals on magnetite nanoparticles. The ZnO crystals were grown by hydrolyzing a supersaturated aqueous solution of zinc nitrate. The seeds for the growth were magnetite nanoparticles with a diameter of 5.7 nm and a narrow size distribution. Hollowed ZnO hexagons of 0.15 microm width and 0.5 microm length filled with Fe(3)O(4) particles were obtained. HR-TEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and selected-area EDS (energy-dispersive spectroscopy) show that the nanoparticles are homogenously spread in the ZnO tubes. Zeta potential measurements were employed to understand the relationship between the nanoparticles and the oriented growth of the ZnO crystals. The results show that the surfactants induced the directional growth of the ZnO crystals.

This study evaluated the effect of multiple consecutive adhesive resin coatings of adhesive bonded to human dentin on nanoleakage and resin-dentin bond strength. Resin bonded dentin specimens were prepared using a total-etch adhesive (One-Step Plus) applied as multiple consecutive coating, or using two self-etch adhesive systems (iBond or Fluoro Bond). For the total-etch adhesive, resin application and air evaporation were performed 1, 2, 3, or 4 times. The self-etch adhesives were applied according to manufacturers' instructions. Resin-dentin bonded beams were prepared and immersed in water (control) or ammoniacal silver nitrate. After storage, microtensile bond strengths were measured. The fractured surfaces were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). No significant differences in bond strength were found between water and silver nitrate storage groups. Several types of silver depositions (spotted, reticular, or water trees) were found in adhesive joints. The bond strengths of the single coated specimens of the total-etch adhesive were significantly lower than those receiving 2-4 coatings. Single coats produced more nanoleakage than multiple coats. However, no correlation was found between the bond strengths and nanoleakage between the different adhesives (total-etch adhesive with different conditions or self-etch adhesives).

A new approach to the formation of palladium nanoparticulate films with diameter between 6 and 50 nm by the solid-liquid interface reaction technique (SLIRT) has been presented. A solid film of palladium nitrate was formed by the modified spin coating method. This film is subsequently immersed in a reducing solution to initiate a reaction at the interface and ultimately transforms it to a palladium metal film. The kinetics of palladium reduction has been studied by UV-visible spectroscopy. The characterization of the palladium film has been performed by various physicochemical techniques such as XRD, ED, XPS, SEM, EDX, TEM, and UV-visible spectroscopy. The texture and morphology of the materials has been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). At a constant palladium nitrate concentration, the average diameter of palladium nanoparticles decreases with an increase of hydrazine concentration. The effect of concentration of hydrazine on the particle size has been discussed. The palladium film formation mechanism has been proposed for the SLIRT.

This study provided morphological evidence that discrepancies between the depth of demineralisation and the depth of resin infiltration can occur in some mild self-etch adhesives. Sound dentine specimens derived from extracted human third molars were bonded with 5 one-step and 5 two-step self-etch adhesives. One millimeter thick slabs containing the resin-dentine interfaces were immersed in 50 wt% aqueous ammoniacal silver nitrate and processed for TEM examination. A zone of partially etched but uninfiltrated dentine was identified beneath the hybrid layers in the milder versions of both one-step and two-step self-etch adhesives. This zone was characterised by the occurrence of silver deposits along the interfibrillar spaces of mineralised collagen fibrils. The silver infiltrated interfibrillar spaces were clearly identified from the one-step self-etch adhesives Xeno III, iBond, Brush&Bond and the experimental adhesive, and were thinner and only occasionally observed in the two-step self-etch adhesives Clearfil SE Bond and Clearfil Protect Bond. The more aggressive one-step and two-step adhesives that exhibit more abrupt transitions from completely demineralised to mineralised dentin were devoid of these silver-infiltrated interfibrillar spaces beneath the hybrid layers. Incomplete resin infiltration observed in some self-etch adhesives may be caused by the reduced etching potential of the acidic monomers toward the base of hybrid layers, or the presence of acidic but non-polymerisable hydrolytic adhesive components, creating potential sites for the degradation of the bonded created by these self-etch adhesives.

Nano-crystalline Co3O4 and CoO powders have been prepared by a spray pyrolysis approach. The effects of the reaction temperature and initial salts on the crystallinity and phase composition have been studied. Based on the TEM and XRD results, the crystal sizes were in the range of 1-10 nm. SEM and TEM observations also reveal that the nano-powders easily create micron-scale spherical agglomerates. The Co3O4 powders obtained by spraying nitrate solution at 500 degrees C show high specific surface area, which according to the BET method is 82.37 m2/g. The time/temperature phase diagram of cobalt oxides developed from XRD and DTA/TGA analyses shows the existence of a CoO phase at low and high temperature ranges when some specific preparation conditions are applied.

The aim of this study was to compare the nanoleakage patterns of the resin-dentin interfaces of three dentin bonding systems at both TEM and field emission in lens SEM (FEI-SEM) levels. A standardized smear layer was created with 180-grit silicon carbide paper (SiC) on dentin disks obtained from 18 noncarious human third molars. Specimens were randomly divided into three groups and bonded with a two-step total etching adhesive (Single Bond, SB), a two-step, self-etching adhesive (Clearfil SE BOND, SEB), and a one-step, self-etching adhesive (XENO III, XEIII). Nanoleakage was evaluated by using an ammoniacal silver-nitrate solution. Specimens were processed for TEM and FEI-SEM observation. The TEM of SB revealed silver deposits in adhesive and hybrid layers (HL). High-magnification FEI-SEM micrographs clearly identified these deposits as spherical clusters mainly associated with nonembedded collagen fibrils. TEM and FEI-SEM examination of SEB revealed some clusters of silver deposits within porosities and small channels of the HL. Additional silver deposits were observed between the peritubular dentin walls and the resin tags. XEIII revealed very fine and diffuse silver grains throughout the entire HL. SEM visualization of nanoleakage at a high level of resolution has not been previously described. FEI-SEM technology supported the TEM visualization with three-dimensional morphological data of the relations between the HL constituents and nanoleakage. The results of the present study confirm the hypothesis that both total- and self-etch adhesives are not able to fully infiltrate the dentin substrate.

Hydroxylated fullerene reacts rapidly and irreversibly (across a wide pH range) with Fe(NO3)3, Al(NO3)3, CaCl2, CoCl2, CuCl2, KMnO4, Ag(NO3), and ZnCl2 under ambient aqueous conditions to produce insoluble metal-hydroxyfullerene cross-linked polymers (M-fullerenol). Materials have been characterized by SEM, TEM, AFM, XPS, and UV-visible spectroscopy. Molecular mechanics calculations on the model systems, [Fe(C60O2)2] and [Fe(C60O2)3], show that both tetrahedral and octahedral coordination are possible. The rate of precipitation reaction is proportional to the concentration of both reagents. The interaction of hydroxyfullerenes with metals is an important issue with regard to waste treatment, fullerene exposure in the environment, and fullerene-based pharmaceutical agents.

New mixed metal clusters with M19 metal frameworks have been synthesized by NaBH4 reduction of Au(NO3)(PMe2Ph) together with AgNO3 in ethanol. Single crystal X-ray diffraction has revealed Au12Ag7 and Au17Ag2 metal skeletons for these clusters, which are best described in terms of bicapped pentagonal antiprismatic cages with a staggered-staggered M(5) ring configuration. These clusters connect the missing link between M13 icosahedral and M25 biicosahedral clusters providing a view of the cluster growth process. A TEM image of this cluster has been observed, which has clearly demonstrated single-sized nano-particles of less than 1.0 nm.

The reaction between silver nitrate and poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) in pyridine at ambient conditions could lead to the formation of spherical nanoparticles or quadrilateral and triangular silver nanoplates, depending on the silver-to-PVP ratio used. It is proposed that the spherical Ag nanoparticles, which were formed early in the reaction, were transformed into nanoplates through an Ostwald ripening process driven by the bridging flocculation of small spherical Ag nanoparticles. This unique and hitherto unreported shape evolution process was carefully followed by a combination of techniques, viz., UV-visible spectroscopy, TEM, and powder X-ray diffraction.
