'O' group mullet, Chelon labrosus, were experimentally infected with Cryptocotyle lingua (Heterophyidae) by tail dip in a suspension of cercariae. Metacercariae were excised after 1 and 24 hours and prepared for
TEM
and post-embedding immunogold labelling. Antisera to cercariae of C. lingua were raised in adult mullet by natural infection via the skin and by intra-peritoneal injection of sonicate. The membrane-bound vesicles within the syncytial lining of the metacercarial excretory vesicle were found to be intensely antigenic with both antisera; the epidermal secretory bodies type 5 within the cystogenous glands gave a positive response. Penetration gland contents were not found to be antigenic with either antiserum. Discharge of the membrane-bound vesicles coinciding with both the reorganization of the lining of the metacercarial excretory vesicle and with cyst wall formation appears to be of significance in the initiation of the host immune response. That the term 'excretory vesicle' in
Digenea
may be a misnomer is discussed in the light of current information regarding the wide range of functions attributed to this structure.

Using
TEM
techniques, 13 types of sensory endings were revealed on the body and tail of cercariae of D. pseudospathaceum. They differ in the presence or absences of cilia, number of cilia, number of electron-dense rings, basal body type and collar shape. The following groups of sensory endings were distinguished: uniciliate with a short (5 types), moderately long (one type) or long cilium (4 types); multiciliate sensory pits (2 types); and nonciliate sensory bulbs. Most sensory endings with long cilium and nonciliate sensory bulbs were found on the tail stem. All the breviciliate sensory endings and multiciliate sensory tips, as well as 1 type with long cilium, were situated on the cercarial body. The uniciliate sensory endings with a moderately long cilium were found on the furcae. The ultrastructural variety of sensory endings in different groups of
Digenea
, as well as their supposed functions, are discussed.

This work describes the first ultrastructural results on spermiogenesis and on the mature spermatozoon of Dicrocoelium hospes (Trematoda,
Digenea
) collected in Bos indicus from Senegal (Africa). Examination of this species was processed by
TEM
. Spermiogenesis follows the general pattern found in the digenean, but reveals a particularity consisting of the appearance of glycogen granules in the late spermatids within the testes. The mature spermatozoon possesses five distinct regions and presents all features found in
Digenea
gametes: two axonemes, mitochondria, nucleus and parallel cortical microtubules. However, several characters allow us to distinguish D. hospes from other digenetic trematodes within the Dicrocoeliidae family. In fact, we observed several structures that are absent in the other species of Dicrocoeliidae studied until now, such as: a cytoplasmic expansion, extramembranar ornamentation, spine-like bodies and two parallel mitochondria in the mature sperm. Moreover, additional particular characteristics were observed in this species in both extremities of the spermatozoon. This work produced new data on the ultrastructure of this trematode family which may be useful for phylogenetic purposes.
