The frictional characteristics of two types of zirconia (Harmony, Hudson Ltd., Sheffield, U.K., and Toray, Yamaura Corp., Tokyo, Japan) brackets were compared with those of polycrystalline alumina (Transcend 2000, Unitek Corp., Monrovia, Calif.) brackets in both dry and wet states. To compare the couples, four arch wire alloys were studied: stainless steel, cobalt-chromium, nickel titanium, and beta-titanium. Under dry conditions, the highest frictional coefficients were seen with the Harmony/beta-titanium couple (uk = 0.64); the lowest values were seen with both Transcend 2000/stainless steel (uk = 0.13) and Toray/cobalt-chromium couples (uk = 0.13). Beta-titanium arch wires produced the highest coefficients of friction against each type of ceramic bracket, except against Toray arch wires in the wet state. The presence of human saliva produced only slight changes in the frictional behavior of zirconia brackets. We conclude that currently available zirconia brackets offer no significant improvement over alumina brackets with regard to their frictional characteristics.

This article describes how Mary Anne Hudson, RN, BSN, turned a devastating spinal injury from lifting patients into a powerful, national-level campaign for safe patient handling in America. Anne Hudson was a well-respected nurse, caring for acutely ill patients in medical-surgical, telemetry, and intermediate care units of a hospital, until a spinal injury from lifting patients ended her hospital career. She discovered that training in "correct" patient lifting technique and body mechanics was inadequate to protect against injury with lifting adult patients of all sizes. The injury led to 2 years of conservative treatment, followed by a two-level, anterior-posterior, lumbar, interbody fusion, with placement of cadaver bone grafts and titanium hardware. During nearly 5 years of dealing with the workers' compensation system, Anne Hudson found that workers' compensation does not assist back-disabled nurses to return to their employment, but, typically re-directs such injured nurses away from nursing, into lower-paying, non-nursing work. With permanent lifting restrictions, Anne Hudson counts herself as quite fortunate to have found other employment as a public health nurse with the county health department. She was aware that a cycle of pain, frustration, and depression is common among injured nurses who are terminated when they can no longer lift. Using dated sediment cores, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congener concentrations in the New York/New Jersey Harbor and Lower Hudson River were investigated using Positive Matrix Factorization. Of the seven factors resolved, six represent Aroclors in various stages of weathering. Factor 1 resembles Aroclor 1242 and is consistent with the Upper Hudson River PCB signal associated with the General Electric capacitor plants near Hudson Falls, NY. This factor is the dominant source of PCBs in the upper layers of the sediment core collected in the Lower Hudson River. Factor 2 (Aroclor 1248) was the dominant PCB component in the core depths corresponding with around 1970, but it has decreased more rapidly since its peak (estimated half-life of about 5 years) than factor 1 (half-life of about 14 years), suggesting that PCBs from the Upper Hudson have delayed the recovery of the Harbor from PCB contamination. The seventh factor, comprised of PCBs 206, 208, and 209, was greatest in concentration in the deepest core slices and is thought be associated with inadvertent production of PCBs during the manufacture of titanium dioxide and/or with foundry waxes containing PCBs. PCB 11, which is thought to be associated with the use of color organic pigments, was examined separately and was detected in sediment throughout the Harbor. Its maximum concentrations generally occurred at the same depth as the maximum total PCB concentrations, suggesting that PCB 11 concentrations decreased after the mid-1970s.
