Certain characteristics of acid phosphatase in the adult male rat are under androgenic control. In further investigations of this control, (1) the polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic pattern of enzyme activity, (2) enzyme specific activity, and (3) the extent of inhibition of enzyme activity by 1-tartrate were examined for prostate, seminal vesicles, kidney, liver and testes from immature, maturing, young, and old mature adult rats. On gel electrophoresis, lysosomal acid phosphatase activity was found for all tissues from all groups of animals. Secretory enzyme was found for the prostate gland, but only after maturation (it appeared between days 28 and 35). At the same time the percent inhibition of activity by tartrate decreases. For the other tissues, the percent inhibition by tartrate increases for the liver and seminal vesicles but not for the kidney and testes. These changes may reflect alterations in lysosomal enzyme characteristics and can be related to known changes in androgen production throughout the life span of the rat.

Male rats made diabetic by streptozotocin injection were tested intermittently for copulation and penile reflexes. Eight to nine months later their bodies, penises, and seminal vesicles weighed significantly less than those of control-injected males, although serum androgen as well as penile and vas deferens norepinephrine levels were not significantly depressed. None of the measures of sexual motivation, performance, or penile responsivity was depressed in the diabetic rats, suggesting that rats are not a fruitful animal model for diabetic impotence.

Sera from wild swine from 20 populations in 11 southeastern states and Hawaii were tested for brucellosis by the card, tube, plate, buffered plate antigen, complement-fixation, and rivanol tests. Twenty-one of 352 (6.0%) swine were considered seropositive, and these animals originated from 7 populations in 5 states: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and South Carolina. Cultural examinations for Brucella suis also were made from subsamples of the swine tested serologically. Brucella suis biotype 1 was isolated from lymph nodes or seminal vesicles from wild swine in 2 areas in Florida and 1 in Louisiana.

Preputial glands are a kind of sebaceous glands ; they play a role in reproduction and sexual and social behavior by means of secreted pheromones. In this work, the authors compared the regression of these glands to that of seminal vesicles and investigated the stimulating potency of three androgens : testosterone, androstenedione, androsterone. These data demonstrate the sensitivity of preputial glands to all three androgens. Castration interrupted the secretory activity of the glandular cells of the acini. Four injections of 250 micrograms of testosterone, nine injections of 250 micrograms of androstenedione or androsterone to male mice castrated before puberty restored elaboration and holocrine secretion of sebum. The authors tested for a possible antagonistic action of two substances : a detergent, superinone (100 mg body weight) and zinc salts (10 mg body weight) associated to androgens. After treatment by superinone, histological analysis revealed glandular cell lysis. The action of zinc salts was less pronounced. Zinc acetate and sulfate seem to counter the elaboration of secretions without disrupting glandular structure. The mechanisms of action of their two substances are very probably different.

The occurrence of zinc ligands in human seminal plasma has been studied with gel filtration techniques. When an eluant of 0.05 M Tris with 0.15 M NaCl, pH 7.4, a mean of 11.6% of zinc was bound to ligands with a molecular weights greater than 80 000 (HMW), 26.9% to ligands with molecular weights between 3000 and 80 000 (IMW), and 61.5% to ligands with molecular weights less than 3000 (LMW), respectively (N = 21). Under standardized conditions the results were highly reproducible. There was a significant shift of zinc from HMW to LMW ligands if pH was less than 7 or higher than 8, or if phosphate ions were present. There was a temperature dependent shift of zinc from IMW towards LMW ligands indicating an enzymatic degradation of the IMW ligands. HMW was not changed with time if the semen samples were kept at room temperature for up 24 h. Despite a prostatic origin of zinc in human seminal plasma there was a co-variation to HMW, i.e. the higher the fructose concentration the more zinc was recovered from the HMW-ligands. If HMW originates from the seminal vesicles this indicate a post-ejaculatory re-distribution of zinc between different ligands.

Sixteen stallions were castrated and 30 days later assigned to one of four treatments: (1) testosterone propionate (175 microgram/kg body weight), (2) 17 beta-estradiol-3-benzoate (44 micrograms/kg body weight), (3) a combination of both steroids or, (4) vehicle only. These dosage were administered every other day for 18 days. The dosages were then doubled and continued for 20 days. Concentrations of testosterone and estradiol in serum decreased rapidly after castration and stabilized within about 6 hours. Mean concentrations of testosterone and estradiol maintained by the steroids were 1.4 and 90 pg/ml, respectively, during treatment at the lower dosage, and 2.6 and 186 pg/ml during treatment at the higher dosage. Libido and the ability to ejaculate were gradually lost after castration. Testosterone restored both aspects of sexual behavior within 2 weeks. Estradiol effectively restored libido at the higher dosage, but was less effective in restoring the ability to ejaculate. The pH of gel-free semen increased after castration and was subsequently decreased by treatment with testosterone or the combination of both steroids. Estradiol had no effect on seminal pH. Weights of the seminal vesicles, ampullae and prostate were greater in geldings treated with testosterone or with both steroids than in estradiol-treated or control geldings. Since estradiol alone was able to restore libido in geldings, it is possible that the maintenance of libido in intact stallions involves either estradiol secreted directly by the testes or estradiol arising from aromatization in peripheral tissues. Treatment with estradiol at either concentration, did not appear to affect the size or function of sex glands in geldings.

Details are given of the macroscopic and histopathological changes brought about by infection of the genitalia of rams by bacteria other than Brucella ovis. Lesions of the seminal vesicles and ampullae are described which, in addition to the clinically evident lesions of the testes and epididymis, could be an important reasons for impaired fertility. The name "bacterial infection of the genitalia", abbreviated to BIG, is suggested as a more appropriate designation for this condition than "ram epididymitis".

In the hopping mouse, Notomys alexis, there are very small testes and relatively low numbers of spermatozoa in the extragonadal ducts. Large ventral prostates are present, but the seminal vesicles, coagulating glands, ampullaries, and dorsal prostates are all extremely small, although their histological structure and secretory activity is similar to that of the laboratory murids. Bulbourethrals are typical, but the preputials are very small and composed of sebaceous secretory units and an associated hair follicle. The possible functional significance of these findings is briefly discussed.

Bovine seminal ribonuclease, a dimeric protein found to be homogeneous by several standard criteria of purity, is heterogeneous when analyzed by ion-exchange chromatography on (carboxymethyl)cellulose. Three increasingly cationic subforms can be separated. The heterogeneity is due to the presence of two types of subunits, alpha and beta, which make up three isoenzymic dimers: alpha 2, beta 2, and alpha beta. Deamidation reactions can convert the most cationic beta 2 subform into the alpha beta subform, which in turn can be converted into stable alpha 2 subform. These conversions involve the hydrolysis of 2 mol of differentially labile amide groups per mol of protein. The ratios alpha 2: alpha beta: beta 2 are constant in all preparations of seminal ribonuclease tested; they are independent of the purification procedure as well as of the biological source of the enzyme (seminal plasma or seminal vesicles). These results indicate that deamidations occur in vivo before the protein is secreted from the seminal glands. They also suggest that heterogeneity of seminal ribonuclease reflects a physiological need of distinct molecular forms of enzyme or, alternatively, a process which leads to the aging of the protein.

The data on the drug sensitivity of 517 staphylococcal strains isolated from the prostate secretion, separate contents of the right and left seminal vesicles, ejaculate and urine of 250 male patients with inflammatory diseases of the genitalia are presented. It is shown that aminoglycoside antibiotics, rifampicin, lincomycin and nitrofurans are the drugs of choice in the treatment of such patients. The resistance of the staphylococcal strains to 14 main antibacterial drugs widely used in the clinical practice was studied for a period of 1971--1978. It was found that the number of the staphylococcal cultures resistant to the drugs except furagin increased. The increase in the resistance level to ampicillin, erythromycin oleandomycin, kanamycin, nevigramon and biseptol was the highest. 95.7 +/- 2.2 per cent of the staphylococcal strains were polyresistant.
