We report the results of clinicopathological and histochemical studies on 64 renal adenomas found in 22 patients. We selected typical renal adenomas for these studies, discarding borderline lesions. The ages of the patients ranged from 42 to 84 years, with an average of 61 years. Male to female sex ratio was 6.3:1. The background conditions included renal cell carcinoma, long-term dialysis, chronic glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis, hydronephrosis and polycystic kidney. The sizes of the tumors ranged from 0.1 to 2.3 mm in maximum diameter, with an average of 0.9 mm. All the tumors were located in the cortex, especially in the superficial one-third. The cytoplasm of the tumor cells was predominantly eosinophilic, and the tumor structure was predominantly papillary. Histochemical study of 19 adenomas from 13 patients demonstrated that all of the adenomas from 13 patients demonstrated that all of the adenomas were positive for

, and for at least one marker of the distal tubulus, i.e.,

, PNA, SBA and PKK1, and that 9 adenomas were positive for at least one marker of the proximal tubulus, i.e., LM1 and LTA. Renal adenomas had predominant histochemical features of the distal tubulus, suggesting differentiation to a distal tubulus-like histology.

Monoclonal antibodies anti-SSEA-1 and

-1, and the lectins

and LTA, bound to the surface of large, round cells randomly distributed in the 26-day pig genital ridge. Other antibodies, SSEA-3, SSEA-4, TRA-1-60, and TRA-1-81, did not react with any cells in the pig genital ridge. SSEA-1-positive cells displayed pseudopods and appeared to migrate from the dorsal mesentery of the hindgut (18-day) to the primordium of the gonad (day 23) and entered the genital ridge by 26 days. The number of SSEA-1-positive cells associated with the dorsal mesentery and genital ridge markedly increased from the 18-day to the 26-day pig embryo. It was concluded that the SSEA-1-positive cells were primordial germ cells (PGCs). Using these markers and alkaline phosphatase histochemistry, pig PGCs derived from the 26-day genital ridge showed no proliferation when grown in STO co-culture in the presence of human LIF, bFGF and SCF.

Secretory meningioma is an infrequent histological subtype of benign, WHO grade I meningioma, that is characterized by focal epithelial and secretory transformation of meningothelial cells. The leading histopathological feature of neoplastic tissue is the presence of eosinophilic hyaline inclusions, defined as "pseudopsammoma bodies". These inclusions are mostly intracytoplasmic, different in size and often multiple. They are stained with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and are immunopositive for epithelial and secretory markers. The aim of this study was to determine the pattern of lectin bindings and ultrastructural features of secretory meningiomas. The examination was performed on 8 cases of secretory meningiomas that occurred in women and were mostly associated with prominent peritumoural oedema. Histologically, the tumours exhibited numerous eosinophilic, PAS positive pseudopsammoma bodies. Immunohistochemical studies revealed a strong, ring-like cytokeratin expression around the pseudopsammoma bodies. The inclusions were CEA and

positive but negative for vimentin. The immunolabeling with four lectins (PNA, SBA, Con A and

) was studied. The majority of pseudopsammoma bodies and surrounding tumour cells were strongly labelled with PNA and SBA. Immunolabelling with Con A showed irregular staining with high intensity in small inclusions. Immunostaining with
DBA
was seldom positive in inclusions and negative in the tumour cell cytoplasm. Ultrastructure of pseudopsammoma bodies exhibited advanced heterogeneity. The size of inclusions and the content of intracytoplasmic lumina varied greatly. Some pseudopsammoma bodies seemed to be located extracellularly and lacked the obvious lumina. Our ultrastructural study and lectin binding pattern support the unique epithelial and secretory transformation of neoplastic cells connected with their altered glycosylation.
