The recent WHO classification of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is based on the morphology and immunohistochemical expression of the lymphoma cells and to a lesser extent, on the molecular and cytogenetic findings. Fifty-three cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were included in the study. Of these, seven cases were primary extra nodal lymphomas. Twenty two patients had peripheral blood and/or bone marrow involvement. A detailed morphological assessment was done and classified using the International working formulation. The two most common types encountered were diffuse large cell lymphoma and small lymphocytic lymphoma. Immunohistochemistry was done using labeled streptavidin-biotin peroxidase complex with CD3, CD20, CD15, CD30, CD 45 (leukocyte common antigen), Cyclin D1, EMA (epithelial membrane antigen). 38 cases (72%) showed B cell expression and 12 cases (22.5%) showed T cell expression. Three cases did not express either marker. B-cell diffuse large cell lymphoma (26%) was found to be the predominant B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The commonest T-cell lymphoma was T lymphoblastic lymphoma (67%) followed by peripheral T cell angioimmunoblastic lymphoma (25%). Immunohistochemistry is a useful and necessary diagnostic modality and helps subdivide prognostically different types of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Using allelochemicals produced by macrophytes to control harmful algae is a novel antialgal method. The present research investigated effects of the species-specific antialgal allelochemical EMA on activities of antioxidant enzymes of Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Chlorella vulagaris. The results showed that 0.25 mg/L of EMA increased activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD)and catalase (CAT) of C. pyrenoidosa and C. vulagaris. With the increase of EMA concentrations, activities of the 3 enzymes of C. pyrenoidosa decreased sharply. The activity of SOD of C. pyrenoidosa decreased to 0 when the EMA were 4 mg/L. With the increase of EMA concentrations, activities of the 3 enzymes of C. vulagaris increased to as higher as 3-4 folders of that of the control set. The results gave hints to elucidate the species-specific antialgal mechanisms of EMA.

A small percentage of ovarian neoplasms are transitional cell tumors, which proves to be a distinct group with various histological and immunohistochemical patterns. In this study, 13 archived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples of transitional cell tumors of the ovary have been assessed using standard HE stain and the indirect tristadial ABC peroxidase IHC method for 11 antibodies (CA125, CK7, CEA, EMA, MNF116, CK20, Vim, ER, PgR, PCNA, Ki-67). More than 50% were malignant Brenner tumors. CA125 was positive in all malignant tumors (of Brenner type and transitional cell carcinomas), but not in benign and borderline tumors, while CK7 was positive in approximately 70% of all cases. These two antibodies have shown a high sensitivity and low specificity, but do not correlate to each other. PCNA was positive in the study batch with a mean value of 40% and Ki-67 with a mean value under 25%. A direct correlation statistically significant has been noted between the aforementioned proliferation factors and the tumor grade (r = 0.4, p = 0.05). The other markers were unspecific, with low sensitivity and independently of the histopathological type.

We present the case of a 62-year-old male patient with a three-month history of pain in the left shoulder. Magnetic resonance imaging of the left scapula showed an osteo-destructive lesion. H and E stained sections revealed a Langerhans cell sarcoma, and immunohistochemistry was performed additionally; CD68, CD163, CD14, fascin, HLA-DR, lysozyme, S100 CD1a and langerin showed a positive reaction, while CD20, CD30, CD34, CD31, pan-cytokeratin, AE/1AE3, SMA, desmin, EMA, ERG, INI-1, CD21, CD4, PLAP, MPO and CD117c were negative. We suggested palliative treatment with chemotherapy and radiation. The patient refused any treatment and died 2 weeks later.
