Meningothelial hyperplasia is a poorly characterized entity, often associated with advanced age, chronic renal failure, trauma, hemorrhage, and neoplasia. In order to elucidate the nature of this lesion, 11 cases defined by the presence of nests of 10 or more cell layers thick, were compared with normal arachnoidal cap cells and meningiomas. , progesterone receptor (PR), EGFR, survivin, VEGF, PDGF-BB, PDGFR-beta, E-cadherin, and cathepsin D status. All cases had at least one putative predisposing factor, including hemorrhage (7), chronic renal disease (5), old age (5), trauma (1), and an adjacent optic nerve pilocytic astrocytoma (1). There was typically a discontinuous growth pattern, with no invasion of surrounding normal tissue. No gene deletions were found, though scattered polyploid cells were seen in 2 cases. The immunoprofile was similar to normal cap cells with one exception; whereas normal cells were uniformly negative for PR, nuclear positivity was seen in 64% of hyperplasias, a frequency similar to that of benign meningiomas. Our data suggest that meningothelial hyperplasia is a reactive process that is usually distinguishable from meningioma based on clinicopathologic and genetic features. It may be preneoplastic in some, though further studies are needed to test this hypothesis.

Rhabdoid meningioma is an uncommon meningioma variant categorized as WHO grade III. The majority of cases occur in adulthood. Herein, we describe a right fronto-temporal rhabdoid meningioma affecting a 3-year-old boy. The lesion measured approximately 4 cm in diameter and incorporated the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery. Sub-total surgical excision of the mass was performed. Histologically, the tumor was mainly composed of globoid plump cells with inclusion-like eosinophilic cytoplasm, peripheral nuclei, prominent nucleoli and occasional intra-nuclear cytoplasmic pseudo-inclusion. , vimentin, HHF35, PgR, INI-1 and p53 positive. The proliferative index (Mib-1) was 15% in the most positive areas. Ultrastructurally, tumoral cells showed an abundant cytoplasm, which was filled with numerous intermediate filaments. Desmosomal junctions were seen. RT-PCR revealed the presence of

gene expression. Molecular study did not indicate alterations of the INI-1 gene, whereas it showed the presence of Pro72Arg in exon 4 at heterozygous state in the TP53 gene. Morphologic features along with immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and molecular results were consistent with the diagnosis of rhabdoid meningioma. The patient was treated with chemotherapy. The lesion remained stable after 33 months of follow-up. Rhabdoid meningiomas rarely occur in children. Owing to its rarity, each new case should be recorded to produce a better clinical, pathological, molecular, prognostic and therapeutic characterization of this lesion.

In conclusion, perineurioma may rarely be NF-1 related and should be included in the spectrum of neoplasms occurring in this disorder.

Posterior pituitary tumors are supposed to represent the morphological spectrum of a single entity. Herein, we report the clinical-pathological, immunohistochemical, and genetic features of 5 spindle cell oncocytomas (SCOs), 3 pituicytomas, and 1 granular cell tumor (GCT). SCOs had the highest local invasiveness and affected older subjects. Since 1p and 13q losses were previously reported in 1 pituicytoma and 1 SCO, respectively, our data demonstrate that posterior pituitary tumors share common genetic alterations. The possibility that posterior pituitary tumors are SMARCA4/SMARCB1-deficient should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis toward other entities.
