An
ICP
-MS method was established for the determination of sixteen trace elements, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Nb, Mo, Ag, Cd, Au, Tl, Pb and Bi in electrical absorption prospecting polyform. Three methods for polyform samples (ashing method, extraction by HNO3 +
H2O2
and digestion with aqua regia) were compared and the results showed that the second method is the best one. The best operational paramenters of X series
ICP
-MS were confirmed, the inner standard 103Rh and 185Re were selected for the determination of elements, and analysis of isotopes interference correction equations was established. Satisfactory linearity of working curves of the sixteen trace elements was obtained, giving all their correlation coefficients over 0.999 8. The determination limit of the analytes was in the range of 0.001-2.2 microg x g(-1). The precision was 1.39%-4.84%, and the recoveries were between 94.86% and 105.2%. The method is sensitive, quick and simple and has been applied to the analysis of a great number of polyform samples.

Determination of metal elements in Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis was studied by
ICP
-AES after HNO3-
H2O2
digestion. The average recovery of the method for K, Mg and trace elements such as Cu, Fe, Cr, Zn, Mn and Pb in the Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis was found to be 93.7%-108.2%, while RSD (n = 5) was 0.7%-4.6% for the metal elements. The method was applied to the analysis of some practical samples, and the results obtained were satisfactory. There is rich Fe in the samples. It is of important significance to assess the value of the Chinese medicine by the determination of trace elements in it with
ICP
-AES.

Quantification and speciation of volatile selenium (Se) fluxes in remote areas has not been feasible previously, due to the absence of a simple and easily transportable trapping technique that preserves speciation. This paper presents a chemo-trapping method with nitric acid (HNO3) for volatile Se species, which preserves speciation of trapped compounds. The recovery and speciation of dimethylselenide (DMSe) and dimethyl diselenide (DMDSe) entrained through both concentrated nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide (
H2O2
) were compared by HPLC-
ICP
-MS and HPLC-HG-AFS analyses. It was demonstrated that trap reproducibility was better for nitric acid and a recovery of 65.2 +/- 1.9% for DMSe and 81.3 +/- 3.9% for DMDSe was found in nitric acid traps. HPLC-ES-MS identified dimethyl selenoxide (DMSeO) as the trapped product of DMSe. Methylseleninic acid (MSA) was identified to be the single product of DMDSe trapping. These oxidized derivatives have a high stability and low volatility, which makes nitric acid a highly attractive trapping liquid for volatile Se species and enables reconstruction of the speciation of those species. The presented trapping method is simple, quantifiable, reproducible, and robust and can potentially be applied to qualitatively and quantitatively study Se volatilization in a wide range of natural environments.

A method for determining 33 elements in lung tissues of patients with lung cancer was developed by using vacuum freeze-drying microwave digestion-
ICP
-MS. The lung tissue samples were treated by vacuum freeze-drying equipment. After microwave digestion in HNO3-
H2O2
solution system, the samples were diluted with the method of constant volume. Under the optimized conditions the samples were analyzed by
ICP
-MS. The double internal standard elements Rh and Re were used to compensate for matrix suppression effect and sensitivity drift. The analytical results showed that the detection limits of the 33 elements were 0.01-0.45 ng x mL(-1). The national standard reference material GBW(E)080193 bovine liver was analyzed by the described method and the measured element values accorded with the standard values or the reference values. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of the method was 2.1%-14.3%. The recovery rates of the studied elements were 90.1%-117.5%. The contents of 33 elements in lung cancer tissues, paracancerous lung tissues and benign lung tissues of 6 patients with lung cancer were determined by the method. It was indicated that the method is rapid, simple and accurate for determining multi-elements in human lung tissue and other biological samples.

Interest in atmospheric dry deposition results mostly from concerns about the effects of the deposited trace elements entering waterbody, soil and vegetation as well as their subsequent health effects. A microwave assisted digestion method followed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric (MAD-
ICP
/MS) analysis was developed to determine the concentrations of a large number of trace metals in atmospheric dry deposition samples with a heavy matrix of polyurethane foam (PUF). A combination of HNO3-
H2O2
-HF was used for digestion. The experimental protocol for the microwave assisted digestion was established using two different SRMs (GBW 07401, Soil and GBW 08401, Coal fly ash). Subsequently, blanks and limits of detection for total trace metal concentrations were determined for PUF filter which was used for dry deposition sampling. Finally, the optimized digestion method was applied to real world atmospheric dry deposition samples collected at 10 sites in Jingjinji area in winter from Dec. 2007 to Feb. 2008. The results showed that the area-averaged total mass fluxes ranged between 85 and 912 mg x (m2 x d)(-1), and fluxes of most elements were highest at Baoding and lowest at Xinglong. In addition, the elemental fluxes in urban areas of Beijing, Tianjin and Tangshan were measured to be higher than that in suburb and rural sites. The average fluxes of crust elements (A1, Fe, Mn, K, Na, Ca and Mg) were one to three orders of magnitude higher than anthropogenic elements (Cu, Pb, Cr, Ni, V, Zn and Ba), varying from 151 to 16034 microg x (m2 x d)(-1) versus 14 to 243 microg x (m2 x d)(-1). Zinc was the most abundant heavy metal and calcium the highest of the crust elements while the elements Mo, Co, Cd, As and Be deposited less or even could not be detected. The anthropogenic and crustal contributions were estimated by employing enrichment factors (EF) calculated relative to the average crustal composition. The EF values of all elements except Pb and Zn were below 10, suggesting that local soil and/or dust generally dominate in the dry deposition flux.

The contents of inorganic elements including K, Ca, Na, Mg, P, S, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, Mo, and Co in the soil-grass-animal mineral system from Qinghai Tibetan Plateau were determined by
ICP
-AES using high pressure system-sealed microwave digestion. The sample of soil was digested with HNO3-HF-
H2O2
acids system, but others including pasture, animal fur, liver, and serum were digested with HNO3-
H2O2
acids system. The operation would be simplified and the blank value would be decreased with the above acids systems. The results were proved to be reliable with the relative standard deviation being 0.271%-2.633% for Ca, 2.971%-4.854% for Co, 0.372%-2.874% for Cu, 0.600%-3.683% for Fe, 0.347%-2.829% for K, 0.626%-2.593% for Mg, 0.705%-4.828% for Mn, 2.946%-4.622% for Mo, 0.689%-3.621% for Na, 0.422%-3.890% for P, and 0.143%-4.622% for S, 0.166%-2.399% for Zn, and all of them were less than 5% for all the elements, and the recovery being 97.1%-101.4% for Ca, 93.5%-112.5% for Co, 95.2%-104.0% for Cu, 96.9%-104.2% for Fe, 96.1%-105.6% for K, 96.2%-102.8% for Mg, 91.5%-108.9% for Mn, 95.0%-113.5% for Mo, 95.2%-101.8% for Na, 94.7%-100.7% for P, 98.3%-108.4% for S, and 97.5%-102.0% for Zn by adding standard recovery experiment. The results of determination were proved that the method of sealed microwave digestion
ICP
-AES was sensitive, precise, easy to operate and rapid for the determination of inorganic elements in the soil-grass-animal mineral system, and could satisfy the sample examination request. The methods and results were meaningful to research on the soil-pasture-animal mineral system including the contents of mineral elements, the circulation of mineral elements, the interaction, and the application of mineral additive.

The contents of inorganic elements including K, Ca, Na, Mg, P, S, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, Mo, and Co from the chicken muscle were determined by
ICP
-AES using sealed microwave digestion. The sample of the chicken muscle was digested with HNO3-
H2O2
system. The relative standard deviation was less than 5% for all the elements, and the recovery was 92.5%-110% by adding standard recovery experiment. This method was simple, sensitive and precise and can perform simultaneous multi-elements determination compared with conventional method of the chicken muscle determination, which could satisfy the sample examination request and provide scientific rationale for determining inorganic elements of chicken meat.

2 mL 50% HNO3 and 1 mL 47%
H2O2
were chosen for tobaccos digestion, and the acidity of final digestion solution was confined to about 2%. Standard solutions were diluted with 2% HNO3. The digestion solutions were determined by
ICP
-MS directly after adding internal standard elements Ge and Rh. In stead of using concentrated acid, this method not only can leave out the process of drying or dilution and extended the life of relevant components of the instrument, but also eliminate the errors of the inconsistency between digestion solutions and standard solutions could be eliminated. The contents of 30 trace elements, the results of eight representatives of which were provided, in tobaccos from seven areas were determined. The detection limits of measured elements were from 0.006 to 1.133 ng x mL(-1). The relative standard deviations were from 0.90% to 5.66%. The recovery rates of two elements (Cu, Y) were from 93% to 102%. The results showed that this method proposed could be applied to multielement simultaneous determination of tobaccos, and there is a deep relationship between the contents of the trace elements and the production place and classification of tobaccos.

A method for the determination of five trace elements, including Pb, Cd, Se, As and Hg concentrations in human whole blood by HNO3-
H2O2
digestion under temperature-controllable condition and
ICP
-MS was described. Under the optimum experimental conditions and instrumental operation parameters, the limit of detection for the five elements were 2-40 ng x L(-1). The system had a good stability with RSDs of the determination of value repeated 3 times less than 3%. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by the results of determination of the Chinese national standard references GBW(E)09034-09036 and GBW09101b, and the analytical results well agreed with the certified values. Using this method, the concentration of the five elements in whole blood of 34 habitants from mercury mining area in western Human province was studied. The result showed that the blood Se and blood As level was at security scope, however, blood Pb, Cd and Hg level was too high and beyond the safety thresholds which should be concerned about. The analytical method mentioned above can be used for determination of trace elements in human blood to achieve a convenient and rapid operation and accurate result.

Abstract Five different pretreatment methods, including dry ashing and microwave digestion with four acid systems (HNO3 +
H2O2
, HNO3 +
H2O2
+ HF, HNO3 + HClO4 and HNO3 + HClO4 + HF), were employed for digestion of the samples of Rosa rugosa. Nine major and trace elements were determined using
ICP
-OES method. The addition standard recovery rates indicate that, with the system of HNO3 + HClO4, better results can be obtained for most of the determined elements. With this method, except for Fe, the recovery rates are in the range of 95.4%-104.6%. For Fe, higher recovery rate (99%) was obtained with HNO3 +
H2O2
+ HF system.
