Sixty-three children with non Hodgkin's lymphoma involving the ENT zone (Waldeyer's ring) were treated between 1975 and 1985 at the Institut Gustave-Roussy. The tumors were localized in the cavum (32 cases), tonsils (16 cases), mandibles (9 cases) whereas 6 patients had more than one of these sites involved. At the time of diagnosis, 16 (25%) had neuro-meningeal involvement. Distribution, according to stages and histology was as follows: 4 stages I, 27 stages II, 12 stages III, 17 stages IV and 3 were unclassifiable. A Burkitt type of lymphoma was diagnosed in 37 (58%), a convoluted lymphoblastic type in 6 (10%) and 20 (32%) fell in a broad category of "other lymphoblastic variety" (32%). With regard to therapy, two consecutive time periods could be identified: from 1975 to 1980 all patients were given the same treatment and neuro-meningeal prophylaxis consisted of irradiation of the skull and intrathecal injections of methotrexate. Since 1981, the therapeutic regimen is designed according to the histo-immunological classification of the tumors and neuro-meningeal prophylaxis is carried out with the use of high dose methotrexate. With this new approach the survival rate has increased from 45 to 80% and the incidence of neuromeningeal relapses has decreased.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has been linked to Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) by seroepidemiological evidence and by the regular proof of EBV-DNA in the epithelial tumor cells. We have been able to study the serological parameters of 62 NPC patients of the local ENT-Clinic. All patients were kaukasians in contrast to a previous study by Henle et al. Our results emphasize the remarkable predominance of EBV-IgA antibodies to viral capsid antigen (VCA) and early antigen (EA) in NPC patients and prove the value of the test for the initial diagnosis of the disease. Follow-up studies with subsequent serological tests strongly suggest that this test is related to the stage of the disease. We have also found NPC-typical serological EBV-IgA titers in 3 lymphoepithelial carcinomas of the tonsil and the soft palate. Similar titers have been found in two cases of poorly differentiated carcinomas of the base of the tongue. All these tumors arise in the lymphoepithelial tissue of Waldeyer's ring. We conclude that possibly some carcinomas of Waldeyer's ring are similarly related to EBV as nasopharyngeal carcinomas are.

The purpose of this study was to collect ENT signs observed during lymphomas. The study was conducted in the unit of ENT at the CHU of Treichville, during 15 month from december 1995 to march 1997. Ten cas of lymphomas was enrolled with 6 Hodgkin's lymphomas, 3 acute leukemia and 1 Hodgkin's lymphoma. The diagnosis was based on biopsy and myelogram. There is a wide spectrum and non specific clinical pictures. Pharynx is the common site particularly on the Waldeyer's ring. The disease is common among young people, low socio-economical status. Female are predominant. Most patients died before specific treatment because of the late diagnosis.

This paper reviews the contribution of the different parts of the oral cavity and the pharynx to the basic physiology of breathing, phonation, speech, swallowing, and of Waldeyer's ring to the functioning of the immune system. We discuss the development of taste and smell, as well as possibilities for chemosensory testing in children.

We present clinical picture of unusual case, of multifocal chorioretinitis due to tuberculosis. Twenty years old female was admitted to ENT department with cerivical lymphadenopathy, profound dolorous tonsils enlargment resembling antibiotic resistant purulent tonsillitis and nasopharyngeal masses. The patient also reported transient vision disturbances. Lymph node and Waldeyer's ring biopsy revealed tubercular granulomatosis with caseation, Gramm(+) bacteria, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA presence by polymerase chain reaction testing.
