A multivariate analysis of 3334 Escherichia coli strains originating from different clinical materials revealed that 50.2% of isolates belonged to the most common 12 (O1, O2, O4, O6, O7, O8, O15, O18, O45, O75, O78, O83) out of 133 serogroups. Haemolysin (Hly) production, mannose resistant haemagglutinating activity for human erythrocytes (MRHA) and colicinogenicity (Col) were recorded in 30, 30 and 36%, respectively. Antigens K1 and K5 were present in 11% and 6.6%, respectively. Association were found among certain serotypes and virulence markers (O1, H-, H7, K1, MRHA, Col; O2, H-, Kl, Col; O4, H-, H5, MRHA, Hly; O6, H-, H1, MRHA, Hly; O6, K5, MRHA, Col; O7, H-, H4, K1, MRHA, Col; O18ac, H7, K1, Col; O18ac, H-, K5, MRHA, Hly; O78, H-, Col (V-type); O83, H-, K1, Col). . With mouse lung toxicity test correlations of serogroups (O4, O6, O18ac), antigen K5, MRHA, Hly and specimens (blood) were also shown. However, association was found between the lack of virulence factors and phage insensitivity and also between K5 positivity and sensitivity to phages 16, 17, there were no correlations between serogroups and phage patterns. On the basis of the above-described associations one can find correlations among virulence markers, serotype, and nosological group of diseases. Animal pathogenicity tests give additional data in understanding the pathomechanism of diseases. Correlations between phage patterns and serogroups reveal certain epidemiological relatedness and also virulence of strains.

. Mature granulocytes reappeared in the blood 2 days after initiation of rhGM-

therapy; granulocyte precursors peaked at 43% after 5 days. Bone marrow examination performed 7 days after the beginning of rhGM-
CSF
therapy revealed complete regeneration of granulopoiesis. The functional analysis of these blood leukocytes in vitro showed regular production of reactive oxygen radicals. Clinically, the patient recovered without any serious side effects due to the rhGM-
CSF
therapy. These results suggest that rhGM-
CSF
accelerates granulocyte recovery from acquired agranulocytosis with the presence of their functional activity.

Candida meningitis is a growing problem today. We report a 21-day-old male baby who was a victim of Candida albicans meningitis with the initial presentations of fever, mild stiff neck, poor feeding and activity. He had been treated with intravenous antibiotics and ventilator therapy prior to admission Initially, he was treated as a case of bacterial
sepsis
after admission with intravenous antibiotics. Due to positive cultures of cerebrospinal fluid for Candida albicans twice, intravenous amphotericin B was started from the 13th hospital day and was continued for 38 days. The successive three sets of
CSF
fungus culture yielded negative results and the patient was doing well without fever. Meanwhile, the brain sonogram revealed normal findings and he was discharged in a stable condition. We report this case and review some literature in an attempt to know more about this unusual disease, which is becoming more frequent as progress in intensive care grows.

Neutropenia is a common finding in patients with AIDS or AIDS-related complex (ARC), and limits their survival and therapies. We administered recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rG-CSF) 300 micrograms/day to 15 AIDS patients with severe neutropenia (< 1000/microliters). without discontinuing zidovudine, ganciclovir or other myelosuppressive drugs (e.g. antineoplastic chemotherapy). All patients showed correction of neutropenia and/or limitation of drug myelosuppressive action. Neutrophil count was > 1000/microliters during the whole follow-up (11 months). No patient showed
sepsis
, opportunistic infections or side effects. These data confirm the efficacy and tolerability of rG-
CSF
in AIDS-related neutropenia.

To investigate the effect of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) on

, chronically catheterized conscious pigs were challenged with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (8 x 10(7) colony-forming units kg-1 h-1) for 84 h (Group A, n = 8). Group B (n = 7) also received rhG-
CSF
at 5 micrograms kg-1 d-1, the first dose being given 30 min before starting bacterial infusion. Two of the animals in Group A died from pulmonary failure, whereas all those treated with rh-GCSF survived. Fever, severe pulmonary hypertension and systemic hypotension--the latter accompanied at first by a transient hypodynamic, and later a hyperdynamic response--were observed in all of the animals. In Group B, however, the rise in temperature, mean pulmonary arterial pressure (at a later stage of the observation), plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor, and endotoxin were significantly less than in Group A. In the rhG-
CSF
-treated pigs, an initial leukopenia completely recovered within 24 h (p < .05 vs. Group A). These data suggest that rhG-
CSF
might be beneficial in the treatment of

From November 1991 through April 1992, 8 infants developed systemic infections due to antibiotic multiple resistant Klebsiellaa (MRK). All were premature and 6 of the 8 weighed less than 1100 g; 7 of the 8 had received previous antibiotic therapy. Five infections occurred during the first week of life. MRK were isolated from blood (8 cases), tracheal secretions (TS-6), stool (3), and
CSF
(1). All Klebsiella blood isolates were resistant to ampicillin, mezlocillin, and cefotaxime, 7 of 8 to ceftazidime and amikacin, and 4 of 7 to aztreonam; all isolates were sensitive to quinolones and imipenem. Four infants died. In all 4 of the isolates, they were sensitive only to quinolones and imipenem, and the empiric therapy used for suspected
sepsis
proved to be inappropriate. The outbreak was terminated by temporary closure of NICU in May 1992. Strict hand washing practices were reemphasized, and the previous empiric antibiotic protocol used for suspected
sepsis
(mezlocillin plus amikacin, and lately ceftazidime plus amikacin) was changed to imipenem and amikacin in the risk population. At closure, 5 additional infants had MRK in stools and/or tracheal suction specimens. Development of MRK organisms should dictate a rational use of empiric antibiotics for neonatal infections in NICU.

-responsive cynomolgus primate model to further characterize this novel monocyte population. Animals treated with rhM-

underwent a progressive and essentially complete conversion to the CD16+ monocyte phenotype, with up to a 50-fold increase in the number of CD16+ cells. This increase was paralleled by the emergence of a population of circulating cells that morphologically resembled large granular lymphocytes (LGLs). However, quantitatively, this population corresponded closely to the number of CD16+ monocytes, and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) confirmed that they were the same. In addition to their LGL-like morphology, many rhM-
CSF
-induced CD16+ monocytes showed a pattern of size, granularity, and quantitative cell surface marker expression that closely resembled the pretreatment LGL/natural killer (NK) cell population but that did not resemble the pretreatment monocyte population. However, rhM-
CSF
-induced CD16+ monocytes could be distinguished from LGL/ NK cells by fact that they all expressed cell surface receptors for rhM-
CSF
, and many of them showed reduced but detectable phagocytic and respiratory burst activity. Studies of human subjects treated with rhM-

also showed an analogous population of "LGL-appearing" CD16+ mononuclear cells. Thus, our studies reveal a previously unsuspected ability of cells in the monocyte lineage to adopt a phenotype similar to that of LGL/NK cells. The extent of this phenotypic convergence suggests that the two lineages retain access to elements of a similar developmental pathway.
