With the aid of a questionnaire form we have gathered information about the clinical picture of patients suffering from primary ciliary dyskinesia. The study group numbered 34 persons, whose diagnosis was confirmed by electron microscopy. Chronic cough and common cold symptoms are present from shortly after birth. Twenty-three respondents reported respiratory tract problems in the neonatal period. The dysfunctional cilia result in chronic respiratory tract infections (chronic bronchitis; bronchiectasis; pneumonia; chronic sinusitis, rhinitis or otitis media). These lead to the following complaints: frequent blowing of the nose (in 32 pat.; 94%), chronic productive cough (in 28 pat.; 82%), chronic common cold (in 26 pat.; 77%), hearing problems (in 24 pat.; 71%), shortness of breath (in 23 pat.; 68%), frequent headache (in 13 pat.; 38%) and sore throat (in 9 pat.; 27%). In order to prevent the invalidating consequences of this disorder appropriate steps should be taken as soon as possible. These should include physiotherapy and adequate antibiotic therapy.

We present a case of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) induced by MRSA after sinus surgery. The patient was a 64-year-old woman who had undergone sinus surgery because of chronic sinusitis. Nine days after the surgery, she began to have sore throat, fever, and diffuse erythroderma followed by severe hypotension and renal dysfunction. Culture of sputum, nasal discharge and stool showed MRSA. Blood culture was negative. She was treated with intravenous fluids, catecholamines and antibiotics (vancomycin and fosfomycin). Continuous hemodiafiltration was started because of oliguria. Her condition improved gradually and she was discharged about a month after the onset of her illness. We should recognize that TSS can occur as a fatal complication after nasal surgery.

Chronic rhinosinusitis occurs to 5% of the population with upper respiratory infections. The objective of this study is to know the main symptoms in a pediatric population younger than 14 years with the diagnosis of chronic rhinosinusitis, to know age and sex distribution and evolution. We did a medical history, physical examination, nasal cytology, skin tests and sinus X rays in each of 100 patients. Results the main symptoms were: cough, halitosis, postnasal discharge, fever, headache, sore throat, facial sensitivity and periorbital edema. This findings predominated in males and the average evolution time was 1-2 years.

Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disease of unknown etiology. In sarcoidosis almost all organs can be involved but the disease most often affects the lungs and intrathoracic lymph nodes. Isolated extrapulmonary organs involvement occurs very seldom. We present two cases of sarcoidosis limited to upper respiratory tract--a young woman with laryngeal sarcoidosis and recurrent throat pain, and a woman with disease of the sinuses and pharynx and clinical symptoms of chronic sinusitis poorly responsive to conventional treatment.
