We investigated three aldolase isozymes (aldolase A, B, and C) in human
lung cancer
by using an indirect peroxidase labeled antibody method. We used 27 tissue samples obtained at surgical operations which were fixed in periodate-

-4% paraformaldehyde (PLP) solution, and embedded in optimum cutting temperature (OCT) compound. They were 11 adenocarcinomas, 9 squamous cell carcinomas, 3 large cell carcinomas, 3 small cell carcinomas, and 1 adenosquamous carcinoma. Aldolase A and C expressed intensely positive stainings in the cytoplasm of cancer cells compared with normal lung tissues, and its positivities were 81% respectively. However, Aldolase B showed almost negative staining, and its positivities were only 41%. These rates had no relation to the histological types or pathological stages of lung cancers, and suggested that human
lung cancer
contained increased levels of aldolase A, and C.

These results provide a strong rationale for the utilization of ras p21 as a target antigen in the imaging of a variety of human cancers.

When WBC decreased to less than or equal to 3,000/mm3 after the 1st course of chemotherapy, 131 patients with
lung cancer
, who were previously classified by the combination regimens of chemotherapy, were enrolled in the study and randomized into 3 groups, 200 micrograms (H), 100 micrograms (L) and untreated control (C) groups. The patients were then subcutaneously treated once daily for 6 consecutive days. WBC and its differential count were measured on Days 4, 7 and 15 after commencement of the study. WBCs in H and L groups were recovered greater than in C group. In WBC differential count, the recovery of neutrophil was prominent in muroctasin treated groups. The portion of immature neutrophil in the bone marrow was also increased by muroctasin treatment. A restorative effect on WBC and neutrophil counts was also confirmed only in the second course of H group. On the other hand, fever and pain in the injected site as side effects were common in the H group and L group in both of courses. In this study, the usefulness of muroctasin in leukopenia was suggested when administered at dosages of 200 micrograms for 6 days.

before and after one month of hydrazine treatment. Baseline plasma

flux was 2580 (SD 580) mumol/h for the placebo group and 2510 (440) mumol/h for the hydrazine group. After one month the placebo group showed a slight rise to 2920 (450) mumol/h (p = 0.08) and the hydrazine group showed a significant fall to 1840 (750) mumol/h (p less than 0.05); serum albumin fell in the placebo group and was unchanged in the hydrazine group. Administration of hydrazine sulphate to reduce aminoacid flux may favourably influence the metabolic abnormalities in cancer cachexia.

Several animal studies have demonstrated that pain is modulated by spinal mechanisms involving prostaglandins and that acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) administered intrathecally has an analgesic effect. We report our experience of this treatment in 60 patients with proven and advanced cancer. An isobaric solution of
lysine
acetylsalicylate was administered by lumbar puncture in doses ranging from 120 to 720 mg of ASA. The results were evaluated using the habitual criteria: scoring system, behaviour, consumption of analgesic drugs. In this trial the method proved astonishingly effective (78% of the cases). Analgesia was strong, almost immediate and without influence on motricity. No thermic or neurovegetative changes were noted. The effect of one injection lasted from 3 weeks to 1 month on average; it was reproduced and often more prolonged after a repeat injection. Pain associated with bone metastases seems to constitute the best indication, notably in breast and

and in myeloma. Visceral (pancreas) or neural pain requires higher doses to respond. Failures (22%) were due to such factors as insufficient dosage at the very beginning of our experience or severe depressive syndrome. The perineal and sphincteral pain of rectal cancer often resists treatment. This simple, inexpensive and very effective method with no other complication than a frequent tendency to fatigue should rank among other analgesic measures in cancer. The lack of respiratory depression is a major advantage over catheter spinal opiate analgesia. We consider that its main indications are pain associated with osteolytic metastases of adenocarcinomas, and myelomas. Owing to the absence of formal toxicological data, its use must be limited to cancer pain and to patients with a life expectancy of less than 2 years.

residue compared to the composition deduced from the cDNA sequence of beta-2-m. Amino acid sequence analysis showed that m-beta-2-m consists of two polypeptide chains produced by a proteolytic cleavage of beta-2-m in the disulphide loop. After reduction and alkylation of m-beta-2-m the two chains were separated by reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography. By amino acid sequencing, amino acid residues 1-56 and 59-99 were identified in the A and B chains respectively. By comparison of the amino acid composition of m-beta-2-m with the known sequence of beta-2-m it was possible to deduce the existence of a Ser-57 in the A chain. Thus proteolytic cleavage of beta-2-m in the intrachain disulphide loop releases the amino acid Lys-58, which results in a modified form of beta-2-m with a molecular mass of 11,620 Da as determined by amino acid analysis.

patients, and free tryptophan in lung and esophageal cancer patients, the preoperative concentrations of all plasma amino acids were similar in both groups of cancer patients and in those with hiatus hernia. After operation the concentrations of glutamine, total tryptophan, alanine, glycine, and arginine fell sharply, whereas those of phenylalanine,

Monoclonal antibodies KS1/4, KS1/9, and KS1/17 were developed in this laboratory from a fusion of the murine myeloma cell line P3X63Ag8 with spleens of BALB/c mice previously primed with UCLA P3 cells derived from a human adenocarcinoma of the lung. Monoclonal antibodies KS1/4 and KS1/17 seemed to recognize similar glycoprotein antigens on the lung carcinoma cells by indirect immunoprecipitation and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis. However, mapping of [3H]

- and [3H]arginine-labeled tryptic peptides of antigens in specific immunoprecipitates of lung carcinoma cells by high-pressure liquid chromatography revealed a one peptide difference. Antibody KS1/9 did not immunoprecipitate any identifiable protein from detergent extracts of the immunizing cell line by routine methods and appears to detect a glycolipid antigen.
