Hemodialysis (HD) patients with functional
iron deficiency
(FID) often develop resistance to recombinant human erythropoietin (Epo). The contributory role of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress in its pathogenesis is poorly understood. We assessed the effect of vitamin C, an antioxidant, on Epo-hyporesponsive anemia in hemodialysis patients with un-explained hyperferritinemia levels. Thirty-one of 132 with Hb 15 patients received standard care and 300 mg of intravenous vitamin C with each dialysis session (group 1) and 15 patients received standard care (group 2). After 3 months, Hb and transferrin saturation levels significantly increased in group 1 but not in group 2 (p < 0.05%).
Hemoglobin
content in reticulocyte and serum ferritin decreased significantly in group 1 but not in control group. In conclusion, hemodialysis patients with refractory anemia and adequate iron stores, vitamin C improved responsiveness to Epo by augmenting iron mobilization and possibly via antioxidant effect.

The content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in serum was also measured. The results showed that anemia caused by
iron deficiency
was established as a consequence of the low-iron diets. SM-Fe showed an effective restoration action by returning Hb, RBC, HCT, MCV, SI, and FEP in IDA animals to normal values. An antioxidant effect was also observed that reduced MDA level, enhanced the activities of SOD and GSH-Px in serum, and protected erythrocytes from the injury of reactive oxygen species as a consequence of SM-Fe intake. In comparison with FeSO4 and FeCl3, higher bioavailability of iron and fewer side effects were also observed. In conclusion, SM-Fe remitted iron deficiency anemia symptoms significantly, suggesting that SM-Fe might contribute to improving hemopoietic function in IDA rats and might be exploited as a safe, efficient new iron tonic.

(Hb) less than 11 g dL(-1), transferrin saturation (T.S) less than 16% were be consider as anemia point and in non-pregnant women, this point is the serum iron less than 40 microg dL(-1), Hb less than 12 g dL(-1) and TS less than 16%. The prevalence of Iron Deficiency (ID), Anemia and Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) were 35.6% (149), 25.8% (107) and 13.5% (56), respectively. Positive correlation exist between serum Iron and Hb (p < 0.0001, r = 0.335), HCT (p < 0.01, r = 0.1581), MCH (p < 0.01, r = 0.1661) and MCHC (p < 0.001, r = 0.262). The prevalence of ID in Fars-native, Turkman and Sistanee women were 33.6, 47.6 and 26.2%, respectively. The rate of anemia on the same women were 27.7, 18.75 and 22.33% and IAD were 15.6, 11.9 and 11.3%, respectively. Chi2-test showed a meaningful difference in regard to ID and anemia among the three groups of women (p < 0.005). A statistical significant correlation was seen between Hb and MCHC (r = 0.467, p < 0.001). In pregnant women, the prevalence of the anemia on the basis of serum iron index, T.S and Hb were seen 24.2, 42.4 and 18.2%, respectively, versus non-pregnant women were 21.2, 34.55 and 20.98%. In summary, can be concluded that the prevalence of anemia its characteristic also is one of the women nutritional problems in the villages around the Gorgan and it is different among the three groups of women and in Fars-native is higher than other groups. Too, anemia is a nutritional problem in pregnant women.

, investigations were carried out before and after iron supplementation for 2 months. The effect of G6PD deficiency and coinheritance of alpha-thalassemia in homozygous HbE were also studied. HbE homozygotes were clinically benign, never had been transfused and had no hepatosplenomegaly. Out of 76 HbE homozygotes, hematological parameters of 7 individuals with
iron deficiency
improved after iron supplementation.

analysis revealed that HbE was the main hemoglobin detected, but 12 subjects were found to have a substantial percentage of HbF, which might lead to misdiagnosis as HbE/beta-thalassemia. Both clinical and hematological phenotypes of simple homozygous HbE did not differ from those who also inherited alpha-thalassemia and/or G6PD deficiency. It is necessary to perform a comprehensive DNA analysis for alpha-thalassemia in cases of homozygous HbE when their partner is suspected of having alpha-thalassemia 1 gene.

One hundred and three patients from Gilan Province, Iran, presenting with hypochromic and microcytic anemia parameters without
iron deficiency
were included in this study. Using gap-polymerase chain reaction (gap-PCR), reverse hybridization StripAssay and DNA sequencing, we detected a total of 113 alpha-globin mutations in 94 (91.3%) of these patients. Most prevalent of the 16 different alpha-thalassemia (alpha-thal) alleles was -alpha(3.7) (42.5%), followed by the polyadenylation signal (poly A2) (AATAAA>AATGAA) (12.4%), Hb Constant Spring [Hb CS, alpha142, Term-->Gln (TAA>CAA in alpha2] (10.6%), --(MED) (8.8%), IVS-I donor site [GAG GTG AGG>GAG G-----, alpha(-5 nt) (-TGAGG)] (7.1%), -alpha(4.2) (4.4%) and poly A1 (AATAAA>AATAAG) (3.5%). An additional nine mutations were observed at frequencies below 2%. We also found two novel alpha1 gene mutations: alpha(-9) (HBA1: c.-9 G>C) and alpha(IVS-I-4) (HBA1: c.95+4 A>G). Our new findings will be valuable for improving targeted thalassemia screening and prevention strategies in this area.

Blood samples were collected from 699 patients attending out patient clinics in Sana'a City, Yemen, to obtain some idea of the prevalence of the thalassemias in our country. Complete blood count, hemoglobin (Hb) electrophoresis, quantitation of Hb A(2) and Hb F, and serum ferritin were determined. Microcytic, hypochromic red cells were found in 103 subjects (14.7%).
Iron deficiency
alone accounted for only a small proportion of these (n = 12), whereas features suggestive of beta-thalassemia (beta-thal) were present in 31 patients (4.43%) and features suggestive of alpha-thal trait were found in 60 patients (8.6%). The study showed that thalassemia probably accounts for most red cell microcytosis in these out patient clinics, and could represent a significant health problem through births of homozygotes and compound heterozygotes with severe disorders. This pilot study should be repeated with improved technology, and extended to include globin gene analysis to define the nature of the disorders that remain poorly diagnosed.

(Hb) levels and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) are abnormal in some persons with hemochromatosis or thyroid disorders. We sought to determine whether serum free thyroxine (T4) affects erythrocyte measures in euthyroid adults with or without C282Y homozygosity. We evaluated 488 white HFE C282Y homozygotes and controls (no HFE C282Y or H63D; normal serum iron measures) identified in screening; we excluded those with thyroid disorders, anemia, erythrocytosis, or serum ferritin (SF) <34 pmol/l. In the remaining 141 C282Y homozygotes and 243 controls, we evaluated correlations of log(10) free T4 with Hb, RBC, MCV, and red blood cell distribution width (RDW). C282Y homozygotes had lower mean age, higher mean Hb, MCV, and log(10) SF, and lower mean RBC and RDW than controls; mean log(10) free T4 did not differ significantly. In HFE C282Y homozygotes, there was no significant correlation of log(10) T4 with erythrocyte measures. In controls, there was a positive correlation of log(10) T4 with Hb (P = 0.0096) and a negative correlation with RDW (P = 0.0286). Among euthyroid white adults without

Iron demands need to be covered by adolescent women due to the increased physical growing, menstruation, pregnancy and fetal growing tissues at this life stage. This study was proposed to investigate the prevalence of

and IDA in pregnant adolescent women from Northwestern Mexico. Participated 186 women under 19 years old during the first or second trimester of pregnancy who attended the local health institutions in Hermosillo Sonora. Questionnaires and 24 hr recalls were administered to collect socioeconomic and dietary information respectively.

(Hb), hematocrit, ferritin and eritrocytic protoporphyrin were measured. Hb and ferritin values were used to categorize the recruited women into normal (37.4%), iron deficient (55.5%) and IDA (7.1%) groups. In these patients, anemia results from chronic diseases. The gynecological cancer patients were found to have higher ESR and lower Hb, RBC, and MCH than the gynecological patients.
