Three recent studies have examined switching people with lipodystrophy from a protease inhibitor to an NNRTI-type drug. Two studies switched patients to Viramune (Nevirapine) and found fat levels in the blood had dropped and the appearance of wasting had improved. In a third study that switched patients from Crixivan to Sustiva, general improvements in tissue loss and belly size were observed, but cholesterol and triglyceride levels became higher than normal. This may make Viramune the drug of choice for people with lipodystrophy and high cholesterol levels. Contact information is provided.
