The discriminant and concurrent validity of the five new scales for the Devereux Adolescent Behavior Rating Scale (DAB) was explored using a heterogeneous sample of psychiatric and substance abuse patients. Consistent with predictions, the substance abuse patients scored higher on the Acting Out Behaviors (AOB) and Heterosexual Interests (HI) scales, and psychiatric patients scored higher on the
Psychotic
Behaviors scale. Gender differences also were found, including boys being rated higher on Acting Out Behaviors, and girls higher on Heterosexual Interests. The new DAB scales demonstrated sufficient concurrent validity using a thorough record review and a patient rating scale (the Child Behavior Checklist [CBCL]). The Neurotic/Dependent Behaviors scale (NDB) showed a consistent relationship with substance abuse and several other measures of more externalizing behaviors, in addition to the predicted relationships with anxious,
tense
, and dependent behaviors. The Withdrawn/Timid Behaviors scale (WTB) proved to be a purer measure of internalizing behaviors in both sexes.

The factor structure of the Revised Behavior Problem Checklist (RBPC) was examined in a large sample of suburban kindergarten children. Teacher-rated dimensions of Conduct Disorder, Attention Problems-Immaturity, Anxiety-Withdrawal, and
Psychotic
Behavior were closely replicated, and a new factor labeled Unmotivated-Isolated was also revealed. These principal components were consistent across gender and across subsamples of children differing as to risk status for learning failure. Evidence was found for the divergent validity of the externalizing dimensions of Conduct Disorder and Attention Problems-Immaturity with respect to criterion measures of alternative behavior ratings, cognitive functioning, and academic achievement. Parent-rated components of Conduct Disorder, Attention Problems-Immaturity, Hyperactive-Impatient,
Tense
-Withdrawn, Anxiety, and Passive-Conforming were less clearly validated, and parent-teacher agreement was modest. It was concluded that the RBPC shows promise for the assessment of preschool-aged children and that narrow-band externalizing dimensions of inattentive versus conduct-disordered behavior are reasonably distinct at this age.

A prospective study was carried out on 30 patients suffering from a
psychotic
episode following a stressful life event. They were found to have an Emotional, Timid, Sensitive,
Tense
and Insecure personality. Sleep disturbance, Affective symptoms, Histrionic behaviour and Excitement were the common clinical features. Sixty-six per cent were found to be clinically and socially remitted during a 6 months' follow-up. For 20% the diagnosis was revised to Affective Psychosis and for 10% to Schizophrenia.

Eleven schizophrenic
psychotic
and 11 manic
psychotic
patients have been compared with each other and with a reference group of 34 dentists with respect to their emotional experience of seven complex nonverbal sounds. A rating form was used which measures three factors of emotional perception: tension-relaxation (factor I), gaiety-gloom (factor II), and attraction-repulsion (factor III). Analyses of variance of the factor scores revealed main tendencies between the psychopathological groups in factor I and III, i.e. schizophrenic psychotics rated the sounds generally as more
tense
and more attractive than manic psychotics. The manic psychotics rated the sounds as generally less
tense
and very much more attractive than the other groups. In factor II the manic psychotics rated one piece as significantly more gay than the other groups. It is discussed in what ways these differences of complex sound perception may be related to characteristic symptoms of the psychopathological states. No convincing evidence may be drawn from this study supporting the assumption that the two psychopathological groups might differ in a specific way in relation to any elementary structural property of the sounds.

This qualitative study considers the views of users of mental health services on a pre-registration nursing curriculum. Semistructured group interviews were used to gain the (illustrative) views of twenty members of two user groups on nursing knowledge, skills and qualities. Interest in users' views has generally been belated or reluctant. In more recent literature, statements emerge about the need to develop a climate of respect, acceptance and sensitivity. While nurses have a central role in mental health care, a detailed examination from the user's perspective has been lacking. Despite the rhetoric of involvement, commentaries on nursing practice suggest little has changed. Findings suggest an eclectic knowledge base that respects individual differences and the user's experience, knowledge of local communities, and better recognition of physical illness is required. 'Knowledge of life' is seen as important. An emphasis on interpersonal skills is suggested, including flexible responses, information-giving, and sensitive handling of
tense
situations. This should be balanced against 'practical' nursing. Traditional teaching in relation to '
psychotic
' experiences is challenged. It is suggested that caring should be emphasized as much as 'rational knowledge'. Developing responsive qualities that minimize 'distancing' may demand a reevaluation of boundaries between user and professional.

An association between serotonin transporter gene 5-HTTLPR polymorphism and development of depressive states in response to different distant and proximal stressors has been reported previously. We studied 5-HTTLPR polymorphism effect on probability of development of mental maladaptation and its peculiarities in 224 relatives of patients with severe chronic mental disorders: schizophrenia, schizoaffective and affective disorders. The SS genotype was associated with elevation on the scale Hypochondriasis of the MMPI that indicated intensity of the autonomic component of anxiety and more concern about health as well as increased sensitivity. At the same time, its relation to depression and anxiety measured by the scale Depression was tentative. The association was stronger in men than in women. Moreover, men with the SS genotype were more
tense
, suspicious, detached and experienced difficulties in concentration (scales Paranoia and Schizophrenia) as compared to those with other genotypes. The results imply a role of the short allele in augmenting and modulation of psychopathological reaction in response to chronic stressful situation in relatives of
psychotic
patients.

Behavioural and neuropsychological vulnerability have been associated with an increased risk of
psychosis
. We investigated whether certain clusters of premorbid behavioural and personality-related signs and symptoms were predictors of nonaffective and/or affective psychosis and schizophrenia, respectively, in a 50-year follow-up of an unselected general community population. Total population cohorts from the same catchment area in 1947 (n = 2,503) and 1957 (n = 3,215) that had been rated for behavioural items and enduring symptoms were followed up to 1997 regarding first-incidence of DSM-IV nonaffective and/or affective psychosis. Attrition was 1-6%. The influence of the background factors, aggregated in dichotomous variables (predictors), on time to occurrence of nonaffective and/or affective psychosis was assessed by means of Cox regression models. In multivariate models the predictors nervous-
tense
, blunt-deteriorated, paranoid-schizotypal and tired-distracted were significantly associated with subsequent nonaffective and/or affective psychosis. In simple models, down-semidepressed, sensitive-frail and easily hurt were significantly associated with development of
psychosis
. When schizophrenia was analysed separately nervous-
tense
remained significant in the multivariate model, although blunt-deteriorated, paranoid-schizotypal and tired-distracted did not; and abnormal-antisocial reached significance. To conclude, we found some evidence for anxiety-proneness, affective/cognitive blunting, poor concentration, personality cluster-A like traits and interpersonal sensitivity to be associated with general
psychosis
vulnerability.
