abdominal aortic aneurysm
or other vascular disease underwent an intravenous infusion of
Adenosine
in conjunction with initial and delayed planar 201Tl scans. Images were interpreted qualitatively and quantitatively by the consensus of two or more experienced observers with patients showing transient left ventricular dilatation or redistribution in one or more myocardial segments reported as being at high risk of peri-operative cardiac events. Of the 50 subjects studied, 49 tolerated the maximum infusion dose with 60% experiencing minor transient symptoms. Low (n = 30) and high risk (n = 20) patients were defined according to
Adenosine
201Tl scans. Age, gender and clinical characteristics were similar in both groups. Thirteen (65%) high risk subjects had coronary angiography compared with only three (10%) low risk patients. Patients with high-risk 201Tl scans were also more likely to proceed to coronary revascularization prior to non-cardiac surgery [5/20 (25%) vs 1/30 (3%)]. , (123 microM). In a special case of people with Leriche Syndrome, a disease characterized by deep atherosclerotic changes, the e-purines level had further increased. Additionally, we also report typical atherosclerotic changes in the aorta using histological assays as well as total cholesterol rise. The significant rise in cholesterol concentration in the blood of the patients with abdominal aortas aneurysm, compared with the control groups, was not unique since 23% of the healthy people also exceeded the normal level of cholesterol. Therefore, our results strongly indicate that the estimation of e-purines concentration in the blood may serve as another indicator of atherosclerosis and warrant further consideration as a futuristic diagnostic tool.

is a master regulator of energy metabolism and reduces myocardial ischemia-reperfusion-induced injury. Furthermore, adenosine is a critical trigger as well as a mediator in RIPC-induced cardioprotection and scientists have demonstrated the role of adenosine by showing an increase in its levels in the systemic circulation during RIPC delivery. Furthermore, the blockade of cardioprotective effects of RIPC in the presence of specific adenosine receptor blockers and transgenic animals with targeted ablation of A1 receptors has also demonstrated its critical role in RIPC. The studies have shown that adenosine may elicit cardioprotection via activation of neurogenic pathway. The present review describes the possible role and mechanism of adenosine in mediating RIPC-induced cardioprotection.
