Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a member of the herpesvirus family, is the causative agent of common human infections and specific
malignancies
. EBV entry into target cells, including B cells and epithelial cells, requires the interaction of multiple virus-encoded glycoproteins. Glycoproteins H and L (gH/gL) cooperate with glycoprotein B (gB) to mediate fusion of the viral envelope with target cell membranes. Both the gH/gL complex and gB are required for fusion, whereas glycoprotein 42 (gp42) acts as a tropism switch and is required for B cell infection and inhibits epithelial cell infection. Our previous studies identified a prominent KGD motif located on the surface of gH/gL. In the current study, we found that this motif serves as a bifunctional domain on the surface of gH/gL that directs EBV fusion of B cells and epithelial cells. Mutation of the KGD motif to
AAA
decreased fusion with both epithelial and B cells and reduced the binding of gH/gL to epithelial cells and to gp42. We also demonstrate that deletion of amino acids 62 to 66 of gp42 selectively reduces binding to wild-type gH/gL, but not the KGD mutant, suggesting that the KGD motif of gH/gL interacts with the N-terminal amino acids 62 to 66 of gp42.

-ATPase NVL2 as a novel hTERT-interacting protein. NVL2 interacts and co-localizes with hTERT in the nucleolus. NLV2 is also found in association with catalytically competent telomerase in cell lysates through an interaction with hTERT. Depletion of endogenous NVL2 by small interfering RNA led to a decrease in hTERT without affecting the steady-state levels of hTERT mRNA, thereby reducing telomerase activity, suggesting that NVL2 is an essential component of the telomerase holoenzyme. We also found that ATP-binding activity of NVL2 is required for hTERT binding as well as telomerase assembly. Domain-containing protein 3) is a mitochondrial membrane bound ATPase whose function has not yet been discovered but its role is essential for embryonic development. The ATAD3 gene has existed since the pluri-cellular organisms with specialized tissues and has remained unique until vertebrates. In primates and human, two other genes have appeared (called ATAD3B and ATAD3C versus ATAD3A the ancestral gene). ATAD3 knock-down in different non-transformed cell lines is associated with drastic changes in the mitochondrial network, inhibition of proliferation and modification of the functional interactions between mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. Patients with
abdominal aortic aneurysm
(
AAA
) frequently have other abdominal pathologies of surgical interest (other diseases, OD). Out of 1,375 elective open aortic replacements for
AAA
, 315 cases with OD were subdivided in Group 1 (82 patients with "clean wound" OD) and Group 2 (233 patients with "clean-contaminated wound" OD). The results of the sub-groups in which OD was treated at the same time as
AAA
were analysed (1a, 66 cases and 2a, 86 cases) and compared with OD not treated at the same time as
AAA
(1b, 16 cases and 2b, 147 cases). EVAR was done in 12 patients with a infrarenal
AAA
and concomitant abdominal disease. In this group post-operative complications occurred in two patients (endoleaks) and no sign of endograft infection was developed. Mean follow-up was 36 months. Mortality was 0% in Group 1a, 1b, 2b and 5.8% in Group 2a. In Group 1a there were one haemoperitoneum, one ischaemic colitis and one graft infection. In Group 1b there were 4 nefrectomies for renal carcinoma and three emergency hernia repairs within 18 months from
AAA
operation. In Group 2a the follow-up was uneventful. In Group 2b there was no acute complication of OD and 57.2% of patients were subsequently operated for OD. In the EVAR group the 30-day and late mortality rates were 0 and 25%, respectively and all deaths were
cancer
-related. Contemporary correction of OD in open surgery for
AAA
should be performed in clean wound cases, while clean-contaminated operations can be done only in selected cases. EVAR is a valid alternative technique to open vascular surgery for the concomitant treatment of aortic aneurysms and abdominal pathologies.

This study was designed to compare the hospital-related costs of elective
abdominal aortic aneurysm
(
AAA
) treatment and cost structure between endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) and open surgical repair (OSR) in Korean health care system. One hundred five primary elective
AAA
repairs (79 OSRs and 26 EVARs) performed in the Seoul National University Hospital from 2005 to 2009 were included. Patient characteristics were similar between two groups except for older age (P = 0.004) and more frequent history of
malignancy
(P = 0.031) in EVAR group. Thirty-day mortality rate was similar between two groups and there was no
AAA
-related mortality in both groups for 5 yr after repair. The total in-hospital costs for the index admission were significantly higher in EVAR patients (mean, KRW19,857,119) than OSR patients (mean KRW12,395,507) (P < 0.001). The reimbursement was also significantly higher in EVAR patients than OSR patients (mean, KRW14,071,081 vs KRW6,238,895, P < 0.001) while patients payments was comparable between two groups. EVAR patients showed higher follow-up cost up to 2 yr due to more frequent imaging studies and reinterventions for type II endoleaks (15.4%). In the perspective of cost-effectiveness, this study suggests that the determination of which method to be used in
AAA
treatment be more finely trimmed and be individualized.

The case of an 81-year-old man with a known 5.2 cm
abdominal aortic aneurysm

) and transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder who presented to the emergency department in painful clot retention is described. Approximately 5 h after starting bladder irrigation he developed a sudden onset of severe abdominal pain radiating to his back. Urgent CT scan (
AAA
protocol) revealed a rupture of the lower pole calyx of his right kidney and a stable aneurysm. Bladder irrigation was stopped and the patient settled with a catheter and simple analgesia. Given his significant co-morbidities, it was felt that surgical intervention for the underlying
malignancy
was inappropriate and the patient was discharged home. At last outpatient review, his renal function was at its baseline and he was suffering no ill-effects from the ruptured kidney.

There have been reports of the coexistence of

including gastric, colonic, pancreatic, and renal. We herein report a case of a previously undiagnosed
AAA
and a presenting complaint consistent with acute cholecystitis. Following cholecystectomy, this was noted to be a rare form of chronic cholecystitis: xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis. There is a known possible association of this uncommon condition with gallbladder cancer. The management of concomitant pathologies can present a real challenge to the multidisciplinary team, especially with large aneurysms.

therapy. In this paper, the discovery and structure-activity relationships of alkylsulfanyl-1,2,4-triazoles, a new class of potent, allosteric VCP inhibitors, are described. Medicinal chemistry manipulation of compound 1, identified via HTS, led to the discovery of potent and selective inhibitors with submicromolar activity in cells and clear mechanism of action at consistent doses. This represents a first step toward a new class of potential anticancer agents.
