Hematological parameters and serum ferritin were compared between 179 vegetarians and 58 control subjects using Hematology analyzer H3 and microparticle enzyme immunoassay, respectively. Serum Vitamin B12 was also compared between 68 vegetarians and 30 control subjects using microparticle enzyme immunoassay. It was found that hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, white blood cells, neutrophils, serum ferritin and serum vitamin B12 in vegetarian were significantly lower than control subjects (P < 0.05). In addition, red cell distribution width and lymphocytes in vegetarians were significantly higher than control subjects (P < 0.05). There were 34 cases of iron deficiency in 179 vegetarians (19.%) which can be classified to iron depletion (4 cases), iron deficient erythropoiesis (12 cases) and
iron deficiency anemia
(18 cases).
Vitamin B12 deficiency

The purpose of the study was to investigate the frequency of nutritional anemia among western venezuelan indians. Three hundred and ninety nine Yucpa indians from the communities of Aroy, Marewa and Peraya were studied. The concentrations of hemoglobin, serum iron, total iron binding capacity, serum ferritin, serum folate and serum vitamin B12 and the frequency of anemia and nutrient deficiency were determined. Anemia was found in 71.7% of people from Aroy, 52.25 from Marewa and in 74.4% from Peraya. No nutrient deficiencies were found in 48.1% of cases with anemia, while

were associated with anemia in only 12.9% of cases. Anemia is a frequently observed manifestation during the clinical course of chronic liver disease. In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the hospital files of 500 chronic liver disease patients and assessed the frequency, etiology and morphology of anemia in 50 patients who fulfilled the criteria to be included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 48+/-16 years and male/female ratio was 1.4/1. The mean hemoglobin value was 9.54+/-2.03 g/dl. The mean MCV was 82.9+/-10.52 fl.

Anemia is common in patients following gastrectomy. The purpose of this study was to document causes of anemias developing during the post-gastrectomy period and to determine the importance of complete blood count parameters on types of anemia. A total of 72 patients (23 women and 49 men) who had previously undergone gastrectomy in the past and who were admitted for the evaluation of anemia were enrolled in study. The patients who were evaluated and treated for anemia in the post-gastrectomy period were excluded.
Iron deficiency anemia
was present in 68 (94.4%) of 72 gastrectomized patients with anemia. Deficiencies of vitamin B12 and folate were present in 57 (79.2%) and in three patients, respectively. The most common cause of anemia was the combination of iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies. Iron deficiency was present in the majority of patients, followed by

Iron deficiency anaemia

) is the most prevalent deficiency disorder and the most frequent form of anaemia in pregnant women. Minor causes of anaemia are folate and
vitamin B12 deficiency
, haemoglobinopathy and haemolytic anaemia. Anaemia is defined as haemoglobin of <110 g/L in the first and third trimester and <105 g/L in the second trimester. The diagnosis relies on haemoglobin, a full blood count and plasma ferritin, which can be supported by plasma transferrin saturation and serum soluble transferrin receptor. Among fertile, non-pregnant women, approximately 40% have ferritin of <or=30 microg/L, i.e. small or absent iron reserves and therefore an unfavourable iron status with respect to upcoming pregnancy. The prevalence of prepartum anaemia in the third trimester ranges 14-52% in women taking placebo and 0-25% in women taking iron supplements, dependent on the doses of iron. In studies incorporating serum ferritin, the frequency of
IDA
in placebo-treated women ranges 12-17% and in iron-supplemented women 0-3%.
