The study was designed to investigate mutagenic and genotoxic properties of six synthetic dyes (Acid Green M, Acid Brown ZMSz, Acid Brown MSzCz, Anionic Black M, Anionic Brown ZM, Anionic Deep Red SM) obtained from All-Union Cancer Research Centre (AUCRC) in Moscow. To study mutagenicity and genotoxicity two short-term tests--Salmonella/microsome test using four strains of Salmonella-typhimurium TA97a, TA98, TA 100, TA102 and micronuclear test on mice were performed. The bacterial test was carried out with and without S9 mix fraction. The micronuclear test was conducted on mice Balb C with doses equal to 40 and 80% LD50 for male and 80% for female mice. Two of the studied dyes (Acid Green M. Anionic Brown ZM) proved to be direct and one (Anionic Deep Dark SM) indirect mutagens in the Salmonella/microsome assay. None of the studied compounds revealed a gentoxic activity in the micronucleus test. However, it was found that four dyes (Acid Brown ZMSz, Acid Brown MSzCz, Anionic Brown ZM and Anionic Deep Red SM) cause a significant decrease in the ratio of polychromatic to normochromatic erythrocytes in bone marrow of mice, which means that at doses used in the experiment they are toxic to erythrocyte series cells.

A series of 19 patients operated on because of pectus excavatum has been analyzed to assess results of Zuk modification of the Brown method. Vital lung capacity, funnel volume, physical fitness, and cosmetic result have been assessed. An asymmetry and developmental disturbances within insertions of pectoralis major, rectus and oblique abdominal muscles were found as well as developmental disturbances of costal cartilage. In 95% of cases a positive patient opinion along with satisfactory functional and cosmetic result have been achieved.

The subject of the work is to assess the clinical parameters and diastolic function in patients with mild or moderate essential hypertension after 5-month treatment with guanfacine 0.5-3 mg/day, mean 1.7 mg. In the group there were 8 women and 8 men, mean age 53.7 +/- 7.6. The diastolic function of the left ventricle was assessed from the echocardiographic M-mode paper sweep of the left ventricle by the method of Gibson and Brown. In clinical parameters systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure was found to decrease significantly, the heart rate was unchanged. Essential improvement of the markers of relaxation was received while amelioration of filling was not significant. The before treatment data were compared with the similar ones of the 60 persons of the control group. The significant differences were found in values of blood pressure, markers of relaxation and indices Iv and Ip.

30 girls aged 13-19 who met criteria DSM-IV for anorexia nervosa were investigated by using a semistructured diagnostic interview assessing general psychopathology as well as anorectic and bulimic behavior, The Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale. The Eating Disorder Inventory, The Anxiety Hamilton Scale, The Depression Hamilton Scale. The comparison group consisted of 30 healthy girls aged 13-19. 1/3 of the girls with anorexia nervosa met the DSM-IV criteria for OCD, 1/10 subjects had OCD and depressive disorder. The comorbidity of eating disorder and OCD or OCD and depressive disorder worsened the course of anorexia nervosa and prognosis.

The authors present two cases of inoperable AVM's of thoracic spinal cord successfully treated by embolization with histoacryl glue (B. Brown Melsungen AG). The glue used for embolization is characterized by instant polymerization when comes in contact with blood. A mass of polymer is visible on X-ray thanks to contrast medium Lipiodol and metallic powder Tungsten that are added to glue and injected together with the latter. In the first case, a female who presented with paraparesis and walked only with assistance embolization performed in one session resulted in neurological improvement enabling independent walking at follow-up 2 yrs later. In the second case of a young male not walking for severe paraparesis embolization performed in three sessions resulted in significant neurological recovery. 10 days after the first session the patient became ambulatory. 6 months after treatment he presented with mild paraparesis and was still ambulatory and leading independent life. In each case embolization was performed after balloon occlusion test during which the function of spinal cord was monitored by somatosensory evoked potentials and neurological assessment.

20 obsessive-compulsive patients (OCD according to DSM IV) were treated with fluoxetine. The efficacy of the 3-month treatment was evaluated by Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Rating Scale (Y-BOCS). The average of the Y-BOCS was 26.9 at the beginning of the treatment. The intensity of the OCD was radically lower after the first month of the treatment. The average of the Y-BOCS was 26.9 at the beginning of the treatment. The intensity of the OCD was radically lower after the first month of the treatment. The average of the Y-BOCS was 18.7 (difference statistically significant). The similar difference of the intensity of OCD was noticed after the second month of the treatment with fluoxetine. The average of the Y-BOCS was 12.9 (difference statistically significant). The average of the Y-BOCS after the third month of treatment with fluoxetine was only 9.1. The intensity of OCD after 3 months of treatment with fluoxetine was clinically insignificant in 60% of the patients and in 35% it was mild. The result of the 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale was low and was not changed statistically during 3 months, treatment with fluoxetine. The results confirm the antiobsessional activity of fluoxetine, particularly in the second month of the treatment. Fluoxetine can be very useful in the treatment of OCD.

The paper presents characteristics and evaluation of the Yale-Brown Scale, its clinical value in assessing severity of obsessive compulsive disorders. The Yale-Brown Scale is a semistructured interview. The scale consists of 10 items, rated from 0 (no symptoms) to 4 (extreme symptoms). There are separate ratings for severity of obsessions and compulsions. The assessment of items is based on the patient's report and the clinician's observations gained during the interview. The studies indicate that the Yale-Brown Scale is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing severity of obsessive compulsive disorder symptoms in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder. This instrument is sensitive enough to changes in symptoms severity; thus, it permits to analyse the efficacy of treatment of OCD. The fact that the total score is not determined by the type of obsessive compulsive symptoms, permits to compare the symptoms severity in patients with different types of obsessions and compulsions and it is suitable to assess the efficacy of treatment of different types of obsessive compulsive disorder.

Authors presented the whole embryo culture (WEC) method suggested for embryotoxicity study. The present paper concentrates on morphological scoring system proposed by Brown and Fabro in 1981. The scoring system provides a precise index of embryonic development and allows a quantitative comparison of development and growth. In our study we used this system with slight modification for assessing an 86 control rat embryos. We have found that routine use of this scoring system in teratology embryo culture experiments may afford further benefits.

Medicine is going from success to success, but with the ever-increasing expectations of the society, the more it achieves, the less it satisfies. This is also true for reproductive medicine. Indeed, advances in basic research and the practical applications of the research that have been performed since the first successful in vitro fertilisation (IVF) in 1978, have given rise to hitherto unimaginable strategies for achieving human reproduction. Couples, that were considered sterile only a few years ago, can now acquire assistance conceiving. Twenty two years after Louise Brown was born, the reproductive medicine methods have spread all over the world and thousands of children have been born as a result of these techniques. ICSI applied to epididymal or testicular sperm in cases of azoospermia permits infertile men to become fathers. Even if the results of reproductive medicine have improved in terms of numbers of pregnancies, it is still striking that it is necessary to use stimulation which sometimes leads to hyperstimulation and multiple pregnancies, that embryo development in vitro is still limited, that implantation only occurs for 15-20% of embryos and this ratio have not changed in the last 20 years. The pregnancy rates currently obtained with IVF are at the most similar to those occurring in vivo. We still need to improve techniques to gain pregnancy rates approaching 50% per embryo. In order to fullfil this task, we need to introduce less aggressive and much simpler ovarian stimulation, routine culture of embryos to the blastocyst stage, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, cryopreservation and in vitro maturation of oocytes and finally to improve the implantation rates by our ability to understand and control the dialog between blastocyst and receptive endometrium.

Since the birth of Louise Brown in July 1978 and the birth of the first intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) child in January 1992 many couples with female-factor or male-factor infertility can be helped to overcome their infertility resulting in a delivery and birth of a child. Over a million children have been born from assisted conception worldwide. Newer techniques being introduced appear less and less 'natural', such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), but there is little information on these children beyond the neonatal period. This risk varied according to the patient's age, the type of ART procedure performed, the number of embryos transferred, and embryo availability. ART is associated with low increase risk of congenital malformations, major birth defects and genetic and imprinting disorders.
