Four fistulated primiparous cows (two Holstein and two
Brown
Swiss) averaging 102 DIM were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square with 3-wk periods to determine the effect of feeding fish oil, extruded soybeans, or their combination on fatty acid profiles of milk and rumen digesta. Experimental diets consisted of: 1) control diet; 2) a diet with 2% (DM basis) added fat from menhaden fish oil; 3) a diet with 2% added fat from extruded soybeans; and 4) a diet with 1% added fat from fish oil and 1% fat from extruded soybeans. All diets consisted of 25% corn silage, 25% alfalfa hay, and 50% concentrate. Milk yields (28.6, 29.7, 29.2, and 28.1 kg/d for control, fish oil, extruded soybeans, and combination diets, respectively) were similar for all fat supplements and control. Milk fat and protein percentages (3.49, 3.08; 3.25, 2.96; 3.47, 3.01; 3.48, 2.99 for diets 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively) were not affected by fat supplements compared with control. Dry matter intake (23.0, 21.6, 22.7, and 21.6 kg/d) was reduced when diets containing fish oil were fed. Concentrations of conjugated linoleic acid [
CLA
; cis-9, trans-11
CLA
, 0.40, 0.88, 0.87, and 0.80 g/100 g fatty acids (FA)] and transvaccenic acid (TVA, 1.02, 2.34, 2.41, and 2.06 g/100 g of FA) were increased in milk fat by all fat supplements, with no differences in milk
CLA
and TVA observed among fat supplements. As with milk fat, proportions of ruminal
CLA
(0.09, 0.26, 0.18, and 0.21 g/100 g of FA) and TVA (2.61, 4.56, 4.61, and 4.39 g/100 g of FA) increased with fat supplements. The effects of fat supplements on ruminal TVA and
CLA
concentrations were also reflected in rumen FA-salts, free fatty acids, and neutral lipids. The higher TVA to
CLA
ratio in the rumen compared with milk indicated that fat supplements increased milk
CLA
concentration mainly by increasing ruminal production of TVA, which also implied the significant role that mammary delta-9 desaturase plays in milk

In an experiment with 3 x 6
Brown
Swiss cows, the effects of dietary supplementations (40 g/kg) of non-esterified lauric (12 : 0), myristic (14 : 0) and stearic acid (18 : 0) on digestibility, metabolisability, milk fat composition and melting properties were investigated. The diet consisted of forage and concentrate in a ratio of 3 : 2. Cows were fed the C18 : 0 supplemented diet for 10 days before treatment feeding started for a 15-day experimental period where, at the end, excreta were quantitatively collected and gaseous exchange was measured. The DM intake averaged 17.9 kg/d for the C14 : 0 and C18 : 0 diets and was reduced (P < 0.05) by 18% in the C12 : 0 diet. The realised intakes of total C12 : 0, C14 :0 and C18 : 0 amounted to 368, 391 and 617 g/d in the respective groups. The efficiency of ME utilization for lactation was higher (P < 0.001) in the C12 : 0 group than in the two other groups indicating differences in metabolism of C12 : 0 in comparison with C14 : 0 and C18 : 0. Shifts in dietary fatty acid supplementation were clearly reflected in the milk fat composition. Associated changes were elevated
CLA
and C18 : 1 trans when supplementing C12 : 0, and a high C18 : 1 to C16 : 0 ratio (P < 0.05) in the C12 : 0and C18 : 0 groups which resulted in an easier melting milk fat than with supplementary C14 : 0. Despite certain favourable effects of C12 : 0 in metabolic energy utilization and milk fat melting properties (relative to C14 : 0), more research is needed on how to improve its palatability for dairy cows.

Heat-stressed dairy cattle are bioenergetically similar to early-lactation cows in that dietary energy may be inadequate to support maximum milk and milk component synthesis. Study objectives were to evaluate whether conjugated linoleic acids- (CLA-) induced milk fat depression (MFD) during heat stress would allow for increased milk and milk component synthesis. In addition,

effects on production variables and its ability to induce MFD were compared between Holstein and
Brown
Swiss cows. Multiparous cows (n = 8, Holstein; n = 5,
Brown
Swiss) averaging 97 +/- 17 d in milk were used in a crossover design during the summer (mean temperature-humidity index = 75.7). Treatment periods were 21 d with a 7-d adaptation period before and between periods. During adaptation periods, all cows received a supplement of palm fatty acid distillate (242 g/d). Dietary treatment consisted of 250 g/d of
CLA
supplement (78.9 g/d of
CLA
) or 242 g/d of palm fatty acid distillate to provide equal amounts of fatty acids. The
CLA
supplement contained a variety of
CLA
isomers (3.0% trans-8, cis-10; 3.4% cis-9, trans-11; 4.5% trans-10, cis-12; and 4.8% cis-11, trans-13
CLA
). Treatments were applied 2 x/d with half of the supplement top-dressed at 0600 h and the remainder top-dressed at 1800 h. There was no overall treatment effect on dry matter intake (23.9 kg/d), milk yield (40.0 kg/d), somatic cell count (305,000), protein (2.86%), or lactose content (4.51%) or yields of these milk components. Supplementation with
CLA
decreased overall milk fat content and yield by 26 and 30%, irrespective of breed. The reduction of milk fat content and yield was greatest on d 21 (28 and 37%, respectively). Energy availability predicted by energy balance was improved with
CLA
supplementation compared with controls (3.7 vs. 7.1 Mcal/d, respectively). Respiration rate (78 breaths/min) and skin temperature (35.4 degrees C) during maximum heat load were not affected by treatment. The group receiving
CLA
had higher total milk fat
CLA
concentration (9.3 vs. 4.9 mg/g). Supplementation with
CLA
induced MFD and altered milk fat composition similarly between breeds and improved calculated energy balance during heat stress, but had no effect on production measures under these conditions.

The influence of grass-only diets either from rye-grass-dominated lowland pastures (400 m above sea level) or botanically diverse alpine pastures (2000 m) on the FA profile of milk was investigated using three groups of six
Brown
Swiss cows each. Two groups were fed grass-only on pasture (P) or freshly harvested in barn (B), both for two experimental periods in the lowlands and, consecutively, two periods on the alp. Group C served as the control, receiving a silage-concentrate diet and permanently staying in the lowlands. Effects of vegetation stage or pasture vs. barn feeding on milk fat composition were negligible. Compared with the control, alpha-linolenic acid (18:3n-3) consumption was elevated in groups P and B (79%; P< 0.001) during the lowland periods but decreased on the alp to the level of C owing to feed intake depression and lower 18:3n-3 concentration in the alpine forage. Average 18:3n-3 contents of milk fat were higher in groups P and B than in C by 33% (P< 0.01) at low and by 96% (P < 0.001) at high altitude, indicating that 18:3n-3 levels in milk were to some extent independent of 18:3n-3 consumption. content in milk of grass-fed cows was higher compared with C but lower for the alpine vs. lowland periods whereas the trans-11, cis-13 isomer further increased with altitude. Long-chain n-3 FA and phytanic acid increased while arachidonic acid decreased with grass-only feeding, but none of them responded to altitude. Grass-only feeding increased milk alpha-tocopherol concentration by 86 and 134% at low and high altitude (P < 0.001), respectively. Changes in the ruminal ecosystem due to energy shortage or specific secondary plant metabolites are discussed as possible causes for the high 18:3n-3 concentrations in alpine milk.

laying hens (26weeks old) were equally subjected to 4 dietary treatments (n=10) and fed a commercial layer diet supplying 2.5% sunflower oil (control) or three levels (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%) of punicic acid in the diets. After 12weeks of feeding the hens, eggs collection began. Sixty eggs - randomly selected from each group - were analysed for physicochemical properties. Eggs naturally enriched with CLnA preserve their composition and conventional properties in most of the analysed parameters (including chemical composition, physical as well as organoleptic properties). Dietary CLnA had positive impact on the colour of the eggs' yolk, whereas the hardness of hard-boiled egg yolks was not affected. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between fatty acids and the pattern that most contributes to discriminate between two farming systems, in which the main difference was the practice, or not, of alpine summer-grazing. Milk and cheese were sampled every month in two farms of Original

cows identical under geographical location and management during no grazing season point of view in the 2018 season. Fatty acids concentrations were determined by gas chromatography. The principal component analysis extracted three components (PCs). Mammary gland de novo synthetized fatty acids (C14:0, C14:1 n9, and C16:0) and saturated and monosaturated C18 fatty acids (C18:0, C18:1 n9c) were inversely associated in the PC1; PC2 included polyunsaturated C18 fatty acids (C18:2 n6c, C18:3 n3) and C15:0 while conjugated linoleic acid (
CLA
n9c, n11t) and fatty acids containing 20 or more carbon atoms (C21:0, C20:5 n3) were associated in the PC3. The processes of rumen fermentation and de novo synthesis in mammary gland that are, in turn, influenced by diet, could explain the relationships between fatty acids within each PC. The discriminant analyses showed that the PC2 included the fatty acids profile that best discriminated between the two farming systems, followed by PC3 and, lastly, PC1. This model, if validated, could be an important tool to the dairy industry.
