The authors advocate a program for diagnosing Liver-Qi Deficiency Syndrome (LQDS) based on the
TCM
theory and clinical practice. Through investigation, LQDS was found to be widely existed as latent period or as external manifestation, which occupied 18.85% in Qi Deficiency Syndrome. The subjects were divided into four groups including normal group,
Spleen
-Qi Deficiency Syndrome (SQDS) group, LQDS with Liver diseases (LD) and LQDS with non-Liver diseases (NLD) group. In order to explore the essence, the simultaneous determinations were done on lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and its isoenzyme, dopamine beta-hydroxylase (D beta H), trace element Zn and Cu, and other serological indexes such as GPT, TP, Alb, A/G, etc. The results were, the content of LDH and trace element Zn in both LQDS-NLD and SQDS were significantly lower than that of normal group. D beta H reflecting sympathetic nerve function in LQDS-NLD was significantly higher than that of both normal and SQDS group; comparing LQDS-LD and LQDS-NLD group, the content of GPT, LDH, LDH5 and trace element Cu in former was significantly higher than that of the latter, but the content of TP, Alb, A/G, D beta H and Zn in former was remarkably lower than that of the latter. In order to avoid confusion, in studying this syndrome, one should distinguish LD and NLD.

Guinea pigs were perfused with the extract of senna (20%). 3 days later glacial acetic acid (5%) was given intra-anally so as to replicate the animal model of
Spleen
Deficiency (SD) and ulcerative colitis which is the disease of Western medicine combined with the Syndrome in
TCM
. The model animals showed the symptoms of SD such as loose stool, anorexia, wasting, aversion of cold, laziness and loss of hair luster and the symptoms of ulcerative colitis such as abdominal distension and mucous bloody stool. The colonic lesion were observed by eyes that the mucosa were edematous, congestive with ulcerative foci. The pathological examinations showed edema and congestion in submucous layers; large amount of inflammatory cell infiltration; and the scaling and ulcer formation of epithelium mucosae. The above-mentioned symptoms and pathological changes were the same as SD and ulcerative colitis in clinical practice. The new medicine "Guben Yichang Tablet" against ulcerative colitis was given to guinea pigs for 7 days could abate their symptoms, increase their body weights and decrease the size of colonic ulcer and edema.

Serum adenosine deaminase (ADA) of 74 liver cirrhosis patients and 100 healthy subjects as control were examined with improved Martinek microassay and peripheral T lymphocyte subsets of 38 liver cirrhosis patients and 60 healthy subjects studied by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) for exploring the relationship between them and syndrome types of
TCM
. The result showed that level of ADA of liver cirrhosis patients was higher than that of control (P < 0.01) and increased in following order: the type of Liver-energy Depression and
Spleen
Deficiency, that of Heat-Stagnation and Blood Stasis and that of Yin-Deficiency and Microvessel Obstruction. The difference of serum ADA among the types were significant (P < 0.01). The result also showed that OKT8 of liver cirrhosis patients was higher, the ratio of OKT4/OKT8 was lower than the healthy subjects (P < 0.05-0.01), but the difference among the types were not significant (P > 0.05). Serum ADA seemed to be one of the reference indexes in differentiating syndrome types of
TCM
, determining the patient's condition and prognosis.

310 patients (153 male, 157 female) of Blood Stasis were divided into various groups by Syndrome Differentiation of
TCM
and 35 healthy subjects were taken as control. The relationship of
TCM
Syndrome and function of blood platelet were studied with blood platelet counting, its volume, adherence and aggregation, plasma thromboxane B2 (TXB2) and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha(6k-PGF1 alpha) as indices of observation. The results were: (1) Blood platelet aggregation of Blood Stasis patients was higher than that in control (P > 0.001). (2) There were some differences of platelet aggregation among different
TCM
Syndromes. Platelet aggregation of Blood Stasis patients with Qi Deficiency was higher than that with other Syndromes significantly, and the aggregating rate in those patients was higher than that in control (P < 0.05). (3) The platelet aggregation and TXB2 of patient with Heart Qi Deficiency were significantly higher than those of the control (P < 0.05, P < 0.001), and they were also higher than of other groups of blood stasis patient with
Spleen
, Lung or Kidney Qi Deficiency.

In order to investigate the relationship between spleen and muscle, the changes of trace elements, enzyme activity, adenine nucleotides and energy charge (EC) in the skeletal muscle of rats with Syndrome of
Spleen
Qi Deficiency (SQD) were studied, the curative effects of Sijunzi Tang (SJZT) for SQD were observed too. Results showed that in comparing with normal rats, the levels of ATP and EC lowered significantly (ATP P < 0.01, EC P < 0.001), the enzyme activity of the anaerobic glycolysis increased significantly (P < 0.05), the zinc and iron concentrations were higher (P < 0.01) while the copper, potassium and sodium concentrations were lower than normal significantly (P < 0.05). These changes could be corrected after treatment with SJZT for strengthening spleen and tonifying qi. Above-mentioned results suggested that the mechanism of spleen qi deficiency is closely related to the abnormal energy metabolism, and the
TCM
theory of spleen dominating muscles might have its scientific basis.

In this study, children suffering from viral and dietetic diarrhea were treated by bathing their legs and feet with Xi Xie Ting according to the
TCM
therapeutic principle of Clearing Dampness-Heat, eliminating inflammation to stop diarrhea, diuresis and regulating the functions of
Spleen
and Stomach. The results showed that there was a significant difference in mean days for disappearance of diarrhea between treatment group and control group (P < 0.01). There were beneficial effects on curtailing the therapeutic course, reducing the times of diarrhea and amount of stool and ameliorating the shape and property of stool.

According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, 37 patients suffering from myasthenia gravis were Syndrome-differentiated into following types preoperationally: (1) Both Qi-Yin Deficiency of Kidney-
Spleen
, 21 cases. (2) Yang Deficiency of Kidney-
Spleen
, 15 cases. (3) Qi Deficiency of
Spleen
only, one case. Thymectomy were done in all cases. Among them, 19 cases had thymoma. The results showed the relationship between the types and the resectionability rate and post-operative crisis rate. On the first two types, they were 95.2% and 9.5%, 46.7% and 73.3% respectively. It was considered that Syndrome differentiation-typing in
TCM
in the myasthenia gravis patients would provide an positive and reliable index for predicting the resectionability and prognosis of the patient.

In order to study the relationship between Kidney Deficiency Syndrome (KDS)and bone density (BD), the BD of 2068 subjects (40-69 years old)was measured with SPA-IIC type monophoton BD scanning device made in China. The subjects including 1144 cases of KDS (320 males and 824 females); 608 cases without KDS (306 males and 302 females); 164 cases of Lung Deficiency (80 males and 84 females); 152 cases of
Spleen
Deficiency (76 males and 76 females). Through comparison with the same sex and age group, it was found that BD in KDS patients was significantly lower than that in the normal subjects and those without KDS, also lower than that in the Lung and
Spleen
Deficiency patients. It indicated that KDS had the corresponding BD changes, which confirmed the
TCM
classical theory "The Kidney governs the bone". Based on the measuring data, the authors took the lower limit of BD normal value minus two folds of SD as the critical value for KDS diagnosis in 40-49 years age group, i. e., male BD < 0.6 g/cm2, female BD < 0.5 g/cm2. The clinical feedback showed that the male and female related coincident rates were 76% and 80% respectively. Therefore, the critical value could be taken as an objective index for KDS diagnosis after excluding other affecting factors.

From May 1992 to May 1995, 102 patients with lung cancer were divided randomly into two groups: group A, 48 patients, treated with combined therapy of
TCM
and chemotherapy, group B, 54 patients treated with chemotherapy alone. The protocol of chemotherapy used in the two groups was similar. The Chinese medicines were given according mainly to the Syndrome Differentiation. Four types were found in the group A: the Lung and
Spleen
Qi Deficiency type, the Lung Heat and Phlegm-Dampness type, the Lung-Yin and Stomach-Yin Deficiency type and the Qi stagnation and blood stasis type. The total effective rate according to the WHO standard was as follows: that of group A and group B was 52.1% and 35.1%; the 1 year survival rate of them was 69.4% and 66.7%, the 2 year survival rate was 56.2% and 15.8% and the median survival time were 13 months and 9 months, respectively. These results suggest that the elevation of median survival time and 2 year survival rate of group A might be closely related with the therapeutic effect of
TCM
, but the combined therapy of
TCM
and chemotherapy did not improve the therapeutic efficacy significantly.

Study on treatment of 54 patients (106 eyes) of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) with traditional Chinese medicine was conducted by using modified method of electroretinography. Results showed: (1) Flicker response of electroretinogram was the most sensitive-criterion in examination, it was more effective when combined with infrared spectrogram. (2) The 30 Hz flicker index, response time were improved after
TCM
therapy in different hereditary types of RP, the improvement was significant in patients with Yang-Deficiency of
Spleen
-Kidney Syndrome and those of autosomal dominant inheritance type (P < 0.01). (3) Decrease of phase angle (phi) under different frequency of flicker after treatment was also significant statistically. The results suggested that flicker responses, which represents mainly retinal cone activity of patients, could be improved to a certain extent by
TCM
treatment, even in those with advanced retinal degeneration.
TCM
treatment could also enhance the bioactivity of nerve network and therefore have a definite significance in retarding the progression of disease and keeping the central vision. The flicker ERG, especially its flicker index, is an effective, sensitive and useful parameter for detection of visual function in patient with retinitis pigmentosa.
