Assay of the enzyme ferrochelatase in marrow, liver, spleen, and red cells has been employed to assess the extent of erythropoietic stimulation in animals bearing the Walker 256 carcinosarcoma and in rats treated by administration of phenylhydrazine,

chloride, human urinary erythropoietin, or chronic blood loss. In all instances, the spleen sustains the most marked increase of ferrochelatase activity, per gram of tissue.

A butanol-extracted water-soluble adjuvant (Bu-WSA) obtained from Bacterionema matruchotii, a gram-positive oral bacterium, is a potent B-cell mitogen for murine lymphocytes in vitro. [(3)H]thymidine uptake of cultured spleen cells of BALB/c mice and nude athymic mice was greatly enhanced by the presence of Bu-WSA.

cells which had been treated previously with rabbit anti-mouse thymocyte serum and guinea pig complement responded to Bu-WSA, whereas thymocytes and nylon wool column-filtered spleen cells were unresponsive to it. It was necessary for the adjuvant to be in the culture for at least 24 h in order to obtain significant lymphocyte activation. As macrophage-depleted spleen cells still responded to Bu-WSA, the proliferative response of lymphocytes seems to be independent of the presence of macrophages. The degree of response of spleen cells stimulated by a mixture of Bu-WSA and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was very close to the sum of the responses stimulated by Bu-WSA and LPS individually.

We carried out an immunotoxicological field study of wood mice in three populations along a heavy metal pollution gradient. Heavy metal concentrations in liver tissue indicated that exposure to silver, arsenic, cadmium,
cobalt
and lead decreased with increasing distance from a non-ferrous smelter. Host resistance to the endoparasite Heligmosomoides polygyrus decreased with increasing exposure, while the abundance of tick larvae and the nematode Syphacia stroma was unrelated to heavy metal exposure.

mass was increased at the intermediate and the most polluted sites and was positively correlated with the number of H. polygyrus and tick larvae. Proportion of early apoptotic leukocytes increased towards the smelter and was positively related to cadmium exposure. Red and white blood cell counts and lysozyme activity showed no relationship with metal exposure. All together, our observations suggest negative effects of heavy metal exposure on the immune function of wood mice under field conditions.

(II) accumulates in organs such as spleen, kidneys, heart, and liver. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of
cobalt
ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (Co-EDTA) on spleen of developing mice. Pregnant BALB/c mice in late gestation were subjected to Co-EDTA treatment at daily doses of 75 or 125 mg/kg in drinking water, which continued until d 90 of the newborn pups. The newborn pups were sacrificed on d 18, 25, 30, 45, 60, and 90, which correspond to different stages of development. Spleens were excised, weighed, and processed for histological analysis.

(II) bioaccumulation in spleen was determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Preliminary results showed that chronic treatment of mice with low- or high-dose Co-EDTA disturbed extramedullary hematopoiesis in the spleen. The number of megakaryocytes was reduced compared to controls. SI was also reduced in d 18 mice treated with low- or high-dose Co-EDTA.
