This article reports on the treatment of 21 obesity patients employing auricular acupuncture. The auricular points used were Mouth, Shen-men, Stomach, Hunger and Spleen, and the period of treatment lasted from two to six weeks. The weight loss in these patients varied from 2 to 16 pounds. The rationale for using these points and cautions for this type of treatment were discussed.

The blood and urine prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), Prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) in 106 cases of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer were investigated by RIA. Meanwhile, the relationship among PGE2, PGF2 alpha and the Syndromes of TCM were approached. The result showed: In comparing with the normal control, the blood and urine PGE2 of 106 cases were obviously higher (P < 0.01), but PGF2 alpha was not (P > 0.05). The urine PGE2 and PGF2 alpha of moderate gastritis were markedly higher than those of mild gastritis (P < 0.05), but there were no significant difference between blood PGE2, PGF2 alpha of moderate gastritis and those of mild gastritis (P > 0.05). The blood PGE2, PGE2/PGF2 alpha ratio of Dampness-Heat in Spleen-Stomach Syndrome and the blood PGE2/PGF2 alpha ratio of incoordination between Liver and Stomach Syndrome were higher than those of Spleen Stomach Deficiency Syndrome in all the cases (P < 0.05). Compared with the normal control, both the decreased amplitude of blood PGE2/urine PGE2 and increased amplitude of blood PGF2 alpha/urine PGF2 alpha ratio showed as following: Spleen-Stomach Deficiency Syndrome > incoordination between Liver and stomach Syndrome > Dampness-Heat in Spleen-Stomach Syndrome. This study suggested: (1) There was a close relation between PGE2 and chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer; (2) There was no correlation between blood PGE2, PGF2 alpha and urine PGE2, PGF2 alpha; (3) PG was possibly a useful objective parameter to the Syndrome Differentiation in TCM.

Pathologic change of gastric mucosa in 247 CAG patients of Spleen Qi (Yang) Deficiency (QYD) and Spleen-Stomach Yin Deficiency(YD) Syndrome were observed. The surface of gastric antrum mucosa of 26 patients with scanning electron microscope as well as the gastric mucosa of 34 patients with transmission electron microscope was observed for their intracellular structure. It was found that the CSAG and CAG I of Spleen QYD amounted to 165 cases (66.8%), and CAG II and III of Spleen-Stomach YD amounted to 34 cases (64.2%). It denoted that the Spleen QYD belonged to mild case, while the Spleen-Stomach YD belonged to severe case. The mitochondria of all kinds of gastric antrum mucosa cells showed retrograded degeneration, the pathologic basis of Spleen Deficiency of CAG, those of Spleen-Stomach QD had sparse broken and swollen mitochondria (82.3%), while the 53.3% of Spleen-Stomach YD displayed vacuolation as its predominant change. The different severity of retrograde degeneration and damage of mitochondria yielded various stage in atrophy of gastric mucosa which was the basis of Syndromes evolution from Defi. to QYD and then YD. Inflammatory change of the gastric mucosa was predominant in Spleen-Stomach YD (45.3%), and far less in QYD (27.1%), P < 0.01.

Knowledges of acupuncture has played a major role in the treatment of human diseases, and has been mentioned in ancient Chinese medical literature for thousands of years. The loci which are most commonly used as treatment sites are points on the Ren Channel, kidney Channel, Stomach Channel, Pericardium Channel, Lung Channel, Spleen Channel and Gallbladder Channel for those loci on the human chest, insertion depth beyond safety level, can create serious consequences other such as pneumothorax, internal organ bleeding or other damage. This study was designed to determine the real safety depth for each locus by using a current scientific approach. The study was carried out at Tri-Service General Hospital and Mackay General Hospital. The sample patient population was 120. According to their body weight and height, patients were divided into six groups with various body sizes, i.e. normal, over and under-weight adults, and by sex differences. After computer tomographic scanning chest, the relative acupuncture loci should be measured according to anatomical position, then the distance between surface of the chest and thoracic pleura can be defined as its safety depth. For each locus of the groups, the mean and its interval of confident can be found. The analysis of variance (ANOVA), t-test, and multiple regression were also calculated by computer. The results show that there are significant differences in body chest loci within the same sex but, for different body sizes, statistically significant differences for each locus appear, so the safety depth for each chest locus has actually been proved. Not only does his data provide useful information for clinical practices, but also the standard safety depth for each loci on the chest could this be established.

Analysing the relations between TCM syndrome differentiation type and pathology in 312 patients with gastric cancer, the authors put forward the syndrome differentiation type of deficiency of vitality and excess in superficiality. The studies showed that the four syndrome types of deficiency of vitality such as Spleen-Stomach deficiency, Qi-Xue deficiency, Yin deficiency and inner heat, Spleen-Kidney Yang deficiency and the three syndrome types of excess in superficiality such as Liver-Stomach disorder, blood stasis and stagnation of Qi, Phlegm-dampness and stagnation of toxic. The same changes in pathologic characteristic of both were from early to late stage, the infiltration getting deeper, the tumor getting larger and the metastasis of lymph nodes around the stomach from little to much. Their difference was that in the deficiency of vitality syndrome-type, the chief manifestation was in nest or spread infiltration type which became serious by degrees, whereas in excess in superficiality type, the reaction of lymphoidocytes around the cancer was decreasing. The studies also showed that in most syndrome types of Spleen-Kidney Yang deficiency and Phlegm-dampness and stagnation of toxic, the tumor occurred in wide-range and the degree of tissue differentiation was quite low. The authors suggested that there might be morphopathologic basis in TCM syndrome differentiation types and the conclusion has practical value in guiding clinics.

Observations on gastric acid secretion, plasma gastrin and prostaglandin E1 in patients with peptic ulcer disease were made after giving acupuncture with Na Ja Fa. The relationship between the chosen points and their effects was also discussed so as to provide more evidence to evaluate and practice the traditional chronoacupuncture more accurately. The results of this experiment were: (1) The gastric acid output of patients with peptic ulcer disease was decreased, while the plasma gastrin and prostaglandin E1 were increased after puncturing with Na Ja Fa. This reveals that the decrease of acid output was not caused by the change of plasma gastrin, however the plasma prostaglandin E1 may be involved in this process. (2) By using points on Stomach and Spleen meridians, there was a better inhibiting effect in acid output than treating the points of other meridians. This showed that using chronoacupuncture should include choosing points according to differentiation and only by laying stress on the relative specialization of the actions of these points one could expect improvement in efficiency. (3) There were no obvious differences between the standard opening points and the group of points which changed to opening points by Dr Shan Yu Tang. This proves that these two groups of points do have some similar functions and are both effective for clinical use.

The Spleen-Stomach theory is an important component of the theories of TCM. Exploration of pathophysiologic changes in patients with Stomach Yin Deficiency Syndrome (SYDS) is of help in explaining the Spleen-Stomach theory. Hence patients with SYDS due to abdominal operation or severe acute abdominal diseases were selected as objects to be observed. The endotoxin in plasma, immune function of the body, the mean temperature and blood perfusion rate at the centre of the tongue, area representing the Spleen and Stomach, the surface pH and index of electric conduction of the tongue and rheologic changes were determined. The results showed that the content of plasma endotoxin in patients with SYDS was 346 +/- 216 ng/ml (mean +/- SD). The value in all patients with SYDS was beyond normal (50 ng/ml), the highest being 1050 ng/ml. ANAE and LTT were decreased, as compared to the control (P less than 0.001). The content of IgG, IgA, CIC in blood increased (P less than 0.05, P less than 0.001, and P less than 0.001 respectively), and that of IgM decreased (P less than 0.002). The consistency of C3 in patients with SYDS was 83.6% of the control (P less than 0.001), and that of C4 and C5 increased (P less than 0.01 and P less than 0.001 respectively). The mean temperature of the tongue with SYDS was 0.64 degrees C lower than the control (P less than 0.05) and the blood perfusion rate was decreased 16.4% than the control (P less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

During the last few years, using the ultra-feeble cold luminescence signal of the body surface as an indicator, we had previously characterized quantitatively the dominant propagated sensation along the classical channels and the regulatory effects of acupuncture on human body. There was a great improvement upon our original apparatus for the measurement which permitted the precise detection for the superficial luminescence phenomena at the acupoints along the classical channels on body surface, by which the intense luminescence lines (various points were described as a line) were found. The nature bio-luminescence of human body surface was investigated in 158 healthy subjects, 158 times for regular channels and 11,582 times for acupoints. It was found that existed intense cold luminescent points (or described as the lines) on body surface along the courses identical with Fourteen Classical Channels, i.e. Back Middle Channel, Front Middle Channel, Lung Channel of Hand Taiyin, Heart Channel of Hand Shaoyin, Pericardium Channel of Hand Jueyin, Large intestine Channel of Hand Yangming, Small Intestine Channel of Hand Taiyang, Triple Burners (warmer) Channel of Hand Shaoyang, Stomach Channel of Foot Yangming, Urinary Bladder Channel of Foot Taiyang, Gall Bladder Channel of Foot Shaoyang, Spleen Channel of Foot Taiyin, Kidney Channel of Foot Thaoyin and Liver Channel of Foot Jueyin. The intensity of luminescence at the classical acupoints was 1.5 times higher than that of the matched points bilaterally 0.5 cm apart from either side of each classical channel, providing that the observation data were displayed by an automatic digital computer, the mean values and standard errors calculated logarithmically and the comparisons assessed with T-test.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

By using a method for synchronously-detecting gastric myoelectric activity and intraluminal pressure and a radioimmunoassay of plasmic motilin, gastric motility, plasmic level of motilin and their relationship in 12 normal individuals and in the patients with a variety of Spleen-Deficiency (SD) Syndromes, i.e. 12 SD with Cold type (H type), 7 SD with Stomach-Yin-Deficiency type(I type), 38 SD with Heat type (R type) and 6 SD with Liver-Qi-Stagnation type (U Type) were investigated. The results showed: degree of myoelectric dysrhythmia and rate of electro-mechanical decouple in all patients (except for I type) were much higher than those in the normals (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05); both mean frequency and amplitude of contraction in the patients were decreased; percentage of contractive action in the patients (except for I type) was lower than that in the normals (P < 0.05); plasmic level of motilin in the patients (except for I type) had a tendency to increase and had a linear correlation to degree of myoelectric dysrhythmia (r = 0.33, P < 0.01). It was suggested that some significant disorders of gastric motility exist in different SD patients and there might be an intrinsic cause effect relationship among increased plasmic motilin, myoelectric dysrhythmia and abnormal mechanical motion. The similar changes suggested that there is pathophysiological mechanism of SD syndrome. Furthermore, this synchronously-detecting method was useful to discover intrinsic relationship between gastric myoelectric activity and mechanical motion.

In this study, children suffering from viral and dietetic diarrhea were treated by bathing their legs and feet with Xi Xie Ting according to the TCM therapeutic principle of Clearing Dampness-Heat, eliminating inflammation to stop diarrhea, diuresis and regulating the functions of Spleen and Stomach. The results showed that there was a significant difference in mean days for disappearance of diarrhea between treatment group and control group (P < 0.01). There were beneficial effects on curtailing the therapeutic course, reducing the times of diarrhea and amount of stool and ameliorating the shape and property of stool.
